Surgical dislocation of the hip is a safe and established technique for treating femoroacetabular impingement. The complication rate is low, and if the correct technique that respects the blood supply is used, femoral head necrosis does not occur. The most frequent complications are minor ectopic bone formation and nonunion of the greater trochanter. Surgical treatment includes the correction of femoral and acetabular pathology. Clinically, in approximately 75-80% of cases a good-to-excellent result can be obtained. However, patients with advanced degenerative changes (exceeding stage 1 osteoarthritis using the Tönnis score) have worse outcomes. It has also been shown that preservation of the labrum has a significant influence on both clinical outcome and progression of osteoarthritis: It seems that preservation of the labrum is mandatory.

Factors such as instability and impingement lead to early cartilage damage and osteoarthritis of the hip joint. The surgical outcome of joint-preserving surgery about the hip joint depends on the preoperative quality of joint cartilage. For in vivo evaluation of cartilage quality, different biochemically sensitive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures have been tested, some of which have the potential of inducing a paradigm shift in the evaluation and treatment of cartilage damage and early osteoarthritis.Instead of reacting to late sequelae in a palliative way, physicians could assess cartilage damage early on, and the treatment intensity could be adequate and based on the disease stage. Furthermore, the efficiency of different therapeutic interventions could be evaluated and monitored. This article reviews the recent application of delayed gadolinium-enhanced MRI of cartilage (dGEMRIC) and discusses its use for assessing cartilage quality in the hip joint. dGEMRIC is more sensitive to early cartilage changes in osteoarthritis than are radiographic measures and might be a helpful tool for assessing cartilage quality.

The empirical analysis of the historical development of transdisciplinary co-production of knowledge (CPK) in organic agriculture (OA) in Switzerland has revealed three distinct phases. The initial phase shows various characteristics of transdisciplinary CPK and a high importance of experiential knowledge. The 2nd and 3rd phases involve an in-creasing segregation of farmers’, extension agents’, and scientists’ knowledge, caused by internal and external impacts, i.e. foundation of independent research institutions, changes in agriculture policy, and new market strategies. These developments strikingly represent an ambiguous trend: the growing societal and political recognition of OA and the increasing market, which are positive achievements, are associated by a gradual loss of very precious forms of CPK. A successful re-establishment of CPK processes and re-integration of experiential knowledge would help to resolve this dilemma and thus improve future research in OA and sustainability research in general.

Palaeoecological studies in the "Alpe d'Essertse" area have provided much information about Vegetation changes and timberline fluctuations during the Holocene In this study we repeated previous biostratigraphic investigations using plant macrofossils to improve their temporal and taxonomie resolution and to test their reliability. By analyzing 0.5-cm layers of a lake sediment we reached a temporal resolution of 44 years, and we were able to reconstruct Vegetation changes in the surrounding area at species level. The sedimentary record analyzed extends from the Late-Glacial to the late Holocene Alpine grasslands (12'000-11'000 cal. BP) were afforested by Larix decidua, Juniperus nana, and Pinus cembra (11'000-9'600 cal. B.P). Stable subalpine larch-stone pine-forests (9'600^4'900 cal. BP) were followed by shrublands and meadows as a consequence of the climatically and anthropogenically induced destruction of forest Vegetation (4'900-2'600 cal. BP). Changes in the abundance of P. cembra and L. decidua needles as well as changes of the other taxa were consistent with those found in previous studies from the same lake. Our results demonstrate that plant-macrofossil records can be reproduced spatially and temporally on separate cores with independent 14C chronologies.
