Many guidelines exist on how to treat patients with multiple injuries correctly in an accident and emergency setting. The aim of the present work was to find out how well patients are treated focusing on trauma induced coagulopathy (TIC), and what anaesthetists involved in trauma care think about their own experiences with TIC.

Citation metrics are commonly used as a proxy for scientific merit and relevance. Papers published in English, however, may exhibit a higher citation frequency than research articles published in other languages, though this issue has not yet been investigated from a Swiss perspective where English is not the native language.

The search for translation universals has been an important topic in translation studies over the past decades. In this paper, we focus on the notion of explicitation through a multifaceted study of causal connectives, integrating four different variables: the role of the source and the target languages, the influence of specific connectives and the role of the discourse relation they convey. Our results indicate that while source and target languages do not globally influence explicitation, specific connectives have a significant impact on this phenomenon. We also show that in English and French, the most frequently used connectives for explicitation share a similar semantic profile. Finally, we demonstrate that explicitation also varies across different discourse relations, even when they are conveyed by a single connective.

Drawing on the reception of Noh drama by Ezra Pound and William Butler Yeats, the article analyses both the literary and cultural ‘translations’ of this form of Japanese theatre in their works, focusing on Yeats’s play At the Hawk’s Well (1917). I conceptualize ‘cultural translation’ as the staging of relations that mark a residual cultural difference. Referred to as ‘foreignizing’ in translation theory, this method enables what Erika Fischer-Lichte has termed a ‘liminal experience’ for the audience –– an effect Yeats intended for the performance of his play. It evokes situations in which opposites collapse and new ways of acting or new combinations of symbols can be tried out. Yeats’s play will be used to sketch how an analysis of relations could serve as a general model for the study of cultural transfer as cultural translation in general. The budding yeast multi-K homology domain RNA-binding protein Scp160p binds to > 1000 messenger RNAs (mRNAs) and polyribosomes, and its mammalian homolog vigilin binds transfer RNAs (tRNAs) and translation elongation factor EF1alpha. Despite its implication in translation, studies on Scp160p's molecular function are lacking to date. We applied translational profiling approaches and demonstrate that the association of a specific subset of mRNAs with ribosomes or heavy polysomes depends on Scp160p. Interaction of Scp160p with these mRNAs requires the conserved K homology domains 13 and 14. Transfer RNA pairing index analysis of Scp160p target mRNAs indicates a high degree of consecutive use of iso-decoding codons. As shown for one target mRNA encoding the glycoprotein Pry3p, Scp160p depletion results in translational downregulation but increased association with polysomes, suggesting that it is required for efficient translation elongation. Depletion of Scp160p also decreased the relative abundance of ribosome-associated tRNAs whose codons show low potential for autocorrelation on mRNAs. Conversely, tRNAs with highly autocorrelated codons in mRNAs are less impaired. Our data indicate that Scp160p might increase the efficiency of tRNA recharge, or prevent diffusion of discharged tRNAs, both of which were also proposed to be the likely basis for the translational fitness effect of tRNA pairing.

In eukaryotic cells, translation of messenger RNA (mRNA) can be initiated either on transcripts associated with the cap-binding complex (CBC; consisting of CBP80 and CBP20) or on transcripts with the eukaryotic translation initiation factor (eIF) 4E bound to the cap. Together with eIF4G and eIF4A, eIF4E forms the eIF4F-complex, which mediates translation initiation during the bulk of cellular protein synthesis. Functionally substituting for eIF4G, the CBP80/20-dependent translation initiation factor (CTIF) has been reported to be part of the CBC-dependent translation initiation complex 1,2. CTIF consists of a N-terminal CBP80-binding domain and a conserved C-terminal MIF4G domain 1. This MIF4G domain has been shown to mediate the interaction between CTIF and different factors such as eIF3g and the stem-loop binding protein (SLBP) 2,3. Here we provide evidence that CTIF, besides its function in translation initiation, is also involved in mRNA translocation from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, possibly through a direct interaction with the nuclear export factor NFX1/TAP. Taken together our results suggest that CTIF can function as a platform that interacts with proteins involved in different steps of the mRNA metabolism.

Accumulating recent evidence identified the ribosome as binding target for numerous small and long non-protein-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) in various organisms of all 3 domains of life. Therefore it appears that ribosome-associated ncRNAs (rancRNAs) are a prevalent, yet poorly understood class of cellular transcripts. Since rancRNAs are associated with the arguable most central enzyme of the cell it seems plausible to propose a role in translation control. Indeed first experimental evidence on small rancRNAs has been presented, linking ribosome association with fine-tuning the rate of protein biosynthesis in a stress-dependent manner.

Sequence analysis and optimal matching are useful heuristic tools for the descriptive analysis of heterogeneous individual pathways such as educational careers, job sequences or patterns of family formation. However, to date it remains unclear how to handle the inevitable problems caused by missing values with regard to such analysis. Multiple Imputation (MI) offers a possible solution for this problem but it has not been tested in the context of sequence analysis. Against this background, we contribute to the literature by assessing the potential of MI in the context of sequence analyses using an empirical example. Methodologically, we draw upon the work of Brendan Halpin and extend it to additional types of missing value patterns. Our empirical case is a sequence analysis of panel data with substantial attrition that examines the typical patterns and the persistence of sex segregation in school-to-work transitions in Switzerland. The preliminary results indicate that MI is a valuable methodology for handling missing values due to panel mortality in the context of sequence analysis. MI is especially useful in facilitating a sound interpretation of the resulting sequence types.

As translation is the final step in gene expression it is particularly important to understand the processes involved in translation regulation. It was shown in the last years that a class of RNA, the non-protein-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), is involved in regulation of gene expression via various mechanisms (e.g. gene silencing by microRNAs). Almost all of these ncRNA discovered so far target the mRNA in order to modulate protein biosynthesis, this is rather unexpected considering the crucial role of the ribosome during gene expression. However, recent data from our laboratory showed that there is a new class of ncRNAs, which target the ribosome itself [Gebetsberger et al., 2012/ Pircher et al, 2014]. These so called ribosome-associated ncRNAs (rancRNAs) have an impact on translation regulation, mainly by interfering / modulating the rate of protein biosynthesis. The main goal of this project is to identify and describe novel potential regulatory rancRNAs in H. volcanii with the focus on intergenic candidates. Northern blot analyses already revealed interactions with the ribosome and showed differential expression of rancRNAs during different growth phases or under specific stress conditions. To investigate the biological relevance of these rancRNAs, knock-outs were generated in H. volcanii which were used for phenotypic characterization studies. The rancRNA s194 showed association with the 50S ribosomal subunit in vitro and in vivo and was capable of inhibiting peptide bond formation and seems to inhibit translation in vitro. These preliminary data for the rancRNA s194 make it an interesting candidate for further functional studies to identify the molecular mechanisms by which rancRNAs can modulate protein biosynthesis. Characterization of further rancRNA candidates are also underway.
