This article describes the worldwide endeavor to combat doping in sports. It describes the historical reasons the movement began and outlines the current status of this effort by international sports groups, governments, and the World Anti-Doping Agency. The purposes, strengths, and limitations of the various entities are illustrated; and recommendations for improvements are made.

Site-selective spectroscopy in hexagonal beta-NaYF4:Er3+,Yb3+ has revealed different environments for Er3+ ions (multisite formation). The low-temperature S-4(3/2) -> (I15/2Er3+)-I-4 green emission depends on the excitation wavelength associated with the F-4(7/2) Er3+ level. We have studied the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the green, red, and blue Er3+ emission upon NIR excitation at similar to 980 nm, in order to establish the role played by energy resonance conditions and the multiple Er3+ sites due to the disordered structure for the upconversion (UC) process (energy tuning). The variation of photoluminescence spectra and lifetimes as a function of pressure and temperature reveals that the origin of the high green UC efficiency of the beta-NaYF4:Er3+,Yb3+ compound is mainly due to the multisite distribution, and the low phonon energy of the host lattice.

A high resolution luminescence study of NaLaF4: 1%Pr3+, 5%Yb3+ and NaLaF4: 1%Ce3+, 5%Yb3+ in the UV to NIR spectral range using a InGaAs detector and a fourier transform interferometer is reported. Although the Pr3+(P-3(0) -> (1)G(4), Yb3+(F-2(7/2) -> F-2(5/2)) energy transfer step takes place, significant Pr3+ (1)G(4) emission around 993, 1330 and 1850 nm is observed. No experimental proof for the second energy transfer step in the down-conversion process between Pr3+ and Yb3+ can be given. In the case of NaLaF4: Ce3+, Yb3+ it is concluded that the observed Yb3+ emission upon Ce3+ 5d excitation is the result of a charge transfer process instead of down-conversion. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Doping in sport is often very present in the media. Doping does not only concern top level sports but it also has an impact on sport as a whole. Young athletes may be influenced by its role models. In Switzerland there are no exact data on this influence or on the use of doping by adolescents. In this article, the effects and side-effects especially on adolescents of some current doping substances are discussed. As well, the regulations of the therapeutic use exemptions for doping substances are explained.

Commercially available LaBr3:5% Ce3+ scintillators show with photomultiplier tube readout about 2.7% energy resolution for the detection of 662 keV -rays. Here we will show that by co-doping LaBr3:Ce3+ with Sr2+ or Ca2+ the resolution is improved to 2.0%. Such an improvement is attributed to a strong reduction of the scintillation light losses that are due to radiationless recombination of free electrons and holes during the earliest stages (110 ps) inside the high free charge carrier density parts of the ionization track.

This paper reports on the effects of Li+, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+ co-doping on the scintillation properties of LaBr3:5%Ce3+. Pulse-height spectra of various gamma and X-ray sources with energies from 8 keV to 1.33 MeV were measured from which the values of light yield and energy resolution were derived. Sr2+ and Ca2+ co-doped crystals showed excellent energy resolution as compared to standard LaBr3:Ce. The proportionality of the scintillation response to gamma and X-rays of Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+ co-doped samples also considerably improves. The effects of the co-dopants on emission spectra, decay time, and temperature stability of the light yield were studied. Multiple thermoluminescence glow peaks, decrease of the light yield at temperatures below 295 K, and additional long scintillation decay components were observed and related to charge carrier traps appearing in LaBr3:Ce3+ with Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+ co-doping.
