This work investigates the subcritical spatial transition in the swept Hiemenz boundary layer by means of direct numerical simulations (DNS). A pair of steady co-rotating vortices located at the attachment line is enforced as a primary disturbance leading to streaks which are stable. A small secondary, time-dependent disturbance interacts with these streaks such that instability and breakdown to turbulence may occur. The instability only occurs for a certain band of secondary disturbance frequencies. Positive secondary instability growth rates could be observed for Reynolds numbers as low as , whereas the linear critical Reynolds number is. Uniform wall suction is shown to stabilise this transition mechanism, analogously to results from linear stability theory. The effects of suction on the formation of primary streaks and on the secondary growth rate are decoupled. For streaks of different suction whose amplitude is held constant by adjusting the Reynolds number, the suction is shown to increase the growth rate of the secondary instability. The stabilising influence of wall suction consists in decreasing the streak amplitude only. Depending on the Reynolds number and the suction strength, breakdown may either occur locally and may be convected along the far-field streamlines, or occur globally and cover broad regions in the downstream direction.

High resolution friction force maps of the benzylammonium terminated crystalline surface of a layer compound are presented. The lateral force map acquired with an atomic force microscope, reveals a significant contrast between different molecular orientations yielding molecular rows which differ from their neighboring ones. The single crystals are formed by stacks of copper oxalate sheets sandwiched between stereoregular organic cations, resulting in highly organized surface structures. Single molecular defects are observed at small loads. The experimental results are compared with numerical calculations which indicate a transition from an unperturbed state at small loads to a distorted state at higher loads. Marine sediments from the Integrated Ocean Drilling Project (IODP) Site U1314 (56.36°N, 27.88°W), in the subpolar North Atlantic, were studied for their planktonic foraminifera, calcium carbonate content, and Neogloboqudrina pachyderma sinistral (sin.) δ13C records in order to reconstruct surface and intermediate conditions in this region during the Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT). Variations in the palaeoceanography and regional dynamics of the Arctic Front were estimated by comparing CaCO3 content, planktonic foraminiferal species abundances, carbon isotopes and ice-rafted debris (IRD) data from Site U1314 with published data from other North Atlantic sites. Site U1314 exhibited high abundances of the polar planktonic foraminifera N. pachyderma sin. and low CaCO3 content until Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 26, indicating a relatively southeastward position of the Arctic Front (AF) and penetration of colder and low-salinity surface arctic water-masses. Changing conditions after MIS 25, with oscillations in the position of the AF, caused an increase in the northward export of the warmer North Atlantic Current (NAC), indicated by greater abundances of non-polar planktonic foraminifera and higher CaCO3. The N. pachyderma sin. δ13C data indicate good ventilation of the upper part of the intermediate water layer in the eastern North Atlantic during both glacial and interglacial stages, except during Terminations 24/23, 22/21 and 20/1. In addition, for N. pachyderma (sin.) we distinguished two morphotypes: non-encrusted and heavily encrusted test. Results indicate that increases in the encrusted morphotype and lower planktonic foraminiferal diversity are related to the intensification of glacial conditions (lower sea-surface temperatures, sea-ice formation) during MIS 22 and 20.

Rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor (RGNT) is a recently introduced, indolent neoplasm composed of diminutive circular aggregates of neurocytic-like cells on a noninfiltrative astrocytic background, typically located in the cerebellar midline The traded concept of RGNT being derived from site-specific periventricular precursors may be questioned in the face of extracerebellar examples as well as ones occurring in combination with other representatives of the glioneuronal family. We describe a hitherto not documented example of asymptomatic RGNT discovered during autopsy of a 74-year-old male. Located in the tuberal vermis, this lesion of 6 mm diameter consisted of several microscopic nests of what were felt to represent nascent stages of RGNT, all of them centered on the internal granular layer, and ranging from mucoid dehiscences thereof to fully evolved - if small - tumor foci. Molecular genetic analysis revealed a missense mutation in Exon 20 of the PIK3CA gene involving an A→G transition at Nucleotide 3140. On the other hand, neither codeletion of chromosomes 1p/19q nor pathogenic mutations of IDH1/2 were detected. By analogy with in situ paradigms in other organs, we propose that this tumor is likely to have arisen from the internal granular layer, rather than the plate of the 4th ventricle. A suggestive departure from the wholesale argument of "undifferentiated precursors", this finding also indirectly indicates that a subset of non-classical RGNTs - in particular extracerebellar examples, whose origin cannot be mechanistically accounted for by either of the above structures - may possibly reflect an instance of phenotypic convergence, rather than a lineage-restricted entity.
