A Case for CDN-as-a-Service in the Cloud: A Mobile Cloud Networking Argument

Content Distribution Networks are mandatory components of modern web architectures, with plenty of vendors offering their services. Despite its maturity, new paradigms and architecture models are still being developed in this area. Cloud Computing, on the other hand, is a more recent concept which has expanded extremely quickly, with new services being regularly added to cloud management software suites such as OpenStack. The main contribution of this paper is the architecture and the development of an open source CDN that can be provisioned in an on-demand, pay-as-you-go model thereby enabling the CDN as a Service paradigm. We describe our experience with integration of CDNaaS framework in a cloud environment, as a service for enterprise users. We emphasize the flexibility and elasticity of such a model, with each CDN instance being delivered on-demand and associated to personalized caching policies as well as an optimized choice of Points of Presence based on exact requirements of an enterprise customer. Our development is based on the framework developed in the Mobile Cloud Networking EU FP7 project, which offers its enterprise users a common framework to instantiate and control services. CDNaaS is one of the core support components in this project as is tasked to deliver different type of multimedia content to several thousands of users geographically distributed. It integrates seamlessly in the MCN service life-cycle and as such enjoys all benefits of a common design environment, allowing for an improved interoperability with the rest of the services within the MCN ecosystem.

Demo -- Closer to Cloud-RAN: RAN as a Service

Commoditization and virtualization of wireless networks are changing the economics of mobile networks to help network providers (e.g., MNO, MVNO) move from proprietary and bespoke hardware and software platforms toward an open, cost-effective, and flexible cellular ecosystem. In addition, rich and innovative local services can be efficiently created through cloudification by leveraging the existing infrastructure. In this work, we present RANaaS, which is a cloudified radio access network delivered as a service. RANaaS provides the service life-cycle of an ondemand, elastic, and pay as you go 3GPP RAN instantiated on top of the cloud infrastructure. We demonstrate an example of realtime cloudified LTE network deployment using the OpenAirInterface LTE implementation and OpenStack running on commodity hardware as well as the flexibility and performance of the platform developed.

Engineering Tocopherol Selectivity in alpha-TTP: A Combined In Vitro/In Silico Study

"We present a combined in vitro/in silico study to determine the molecular origin of the selectivity of a-tocopherol transfer" "protein (a-TTP) towards a-tocopherol. Molecular dynamics simulations combined to free energy perturbation calculations predict a binding free energy for a-tocopherol to a-TTP 8.26+2.13 kcal mol{1 lower than that of c-tocopherol. Our calculations show that c-tocopherol binds to a-TTP in a significantly distorted geometry as compared to that of the natural ligand. Variations in the hydration of the binding pocket and in the protein structure are found as well. We propose a mutation, A156L, which significantly modifies the selectivity properties of a-TTP towards the two tocopherols. In particular, our simulations predict that A156L binds preferentially to c-tocopherol, with striking structural similarities to the wild-type- a-tocopherol complex. The affinity properties are confirmed by differential scanning fluorimetry as well as in vitro competitive binding assays. Our data indicate that residue A156 is at a critical position for determination of the selectivity of a-TTP. The engineering of TTP mutants with modulating binding properties can have potential impact at industrial level for easier purification of single tocopherols from vitamin E mixtures coming from natural oils or synthetic processes. Service Descriptions and Linked Data for Integrating WSNs into Enterprise IT

This paper presents our ongoing work on enterprise IT integration of sensor networks based on the idea of service descriptions and applying linked data principles to them. We argue that using linked service descriptions facilitates a better integration of sensor nodes into enterprise IT systems and allows SOA principles to be used within the enterprise IT and within the sensor network itself.

Oral mucosal lesions diagnosed in a stomatology service. An examination of clinico-pathological findings from the year 2003

During 2003, a total of 258 new patients with oral soft tissue lesions were admitted at the Stomatology Service of the Department of Oral Surgery and Stomatology at the University of Berne. For the present study, 185 patients with clinically and histopathologically verified diagnoses were included. The following data was collected: prevalence of oral mucosal lesions, distribution of benign, precancerous and malign lesions in different age groups, and the concordance of the referral with the working diagnosis at the Stomatology Service. The most frequent pathological soft tissue findings were fibrous hyperplasias (n = 44) and oral lichen planus (n = 30). Precancerous lesions were present in 41 cases (30 patients with oral lichen planus, eleven oral leukoplakias), and ten patients had oral malignomas. Most lesions were found in patients between the age of 40 and 60 years. The referral diagnosis concurred in 36.6% (n = 67) of the cases with the definite diagnosis before initiation of treatment, the working diagnosis in 70% (n = 128) of the cases. Therefore, it can be concluded that a specialised Stomatology Service serves as a center of competence due to large numbers of patients/cases seen and treated, and the resulting high level of clinical experience of the staff. Moreover, it is important in the primary diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma, in collaboration with the referring dentist in private practice.
