Das Buch bietet einen hervorragenden Einstieg in die Arbeiten von Jacques Rancière. Zentrale Theorieannahmen werden dargestellt und deren Bedeutung für die Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften der Gegenwart aufgezeigt. Ist es notwendig, angesichts der Rezeptionsflut in den letzten Jahren, überhaupt noch Worte bezüglich der Aktualität der Arbeiten Jacques Rancières zu verlieren? Tatsachlich gibt es wahrscheinlich gegenwärtig wenige Philosophen, die in ganz unterschiedlichen Kontexten so stark aufgegriffen und zitiert werden wie der französische Denker Rancière. Dieses Buch führt – mit einem durchaus kritischen Impetus – in das Denken und in die Arbeiten Jacques Rancières ein.

Indications for a protective function of beta2-glycoprotein I in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura

It has been shown that β(2) -glycoprotein I (β(2) GPI) interacts with von Willebrand factor (VWF) in a glycoprotein (GP)Ib binding state. Given the presence of active VWF multimers in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), we speculated that β(2) GPI might play a role in TTP. We found that β(2) GPI plasma levels were significantly lower in acute and remission TTP patients than in normal controls, showing a direct correlation with ADAMTS 13 levels and an inverse correlation with the extent of VWF activation. In vitro flow experiments demonstrated that β(2) GPI can block platelet adhesion to endothelial cell-derived VWF strings. We confirmed the direct binding of β(2) GPI to VWF by surface plasmon resonance, and determined that domain I of β(2) GPI is the binding site of VWF A1 domain. Adhesion of β(2) GPI to erythrocytes and platelets was increased in the presence of active VWF, indicating that β(2) GPI may be cleared from the circulation during TTP episodes together with blood cells. Our findings suggest that β(2) GPI may protect from the effects of hyper-functional VWF by inhibiting its interaction with platelets.

Users of cochlear implant systems, that is, of auditory aids which stimulate the auditory nerve at the cochlea electrically, often complain about poor speech understanding in noisy environments. Despite the proven advantages of multimicrophone directional noise reduction systems for conventional hearing aids, only one major manufacturer has so far implemented such a system in a product, presumably because of the added power consumption and size. We present a physically small (intermicrophone distance 7 mm) and computationally inexpensive adaptive noise reduction system suitable for behind-the-ear cochlear implant speech processors. Supporting algorithms, which allow the adjustment of the opening angle and the maximum noise suppression, are proposed and evaluated. A portable real-time device for test in real acoustic environments is presented.
