Skull-stripping (or brain extraction) is an important pre-processing step in neuroimage analysis. This document describes a skull-stripping filter implemented using the Insight Toolkit ITK, which we named itk::StripTsImageFilter. It is a composite filter based on existing ITK classes. The filter has been implemented with usability, robustness, speed and versatility in mind, rather than accuracy. This makes it useful for many pre-processing tasks in neuroimage analysis. This paper is accompanied by the source code, input data and a testing environment.

INTRODUCTION In this in-vitro study, we aimed to investigate the predictability of the expected amount of stripping using 3 common stripping devices on premolars. METHODS One hundred eighty extracted premolars were mounted and aligned in silicone. Tooth mobility was tested with Periotest (Medizintechnik Gulden, Modautal, Germany) (8.3 ± 2.8 units). The selected methods for interproximal enamel reduction were hand-pulled strips (Horico, Hapf Ringleb & Company, Berlin, Germany), oscillating segmental disks (O-drive-OD 30; KaVo Dental, Biberach, Germany), and motor-driven abrasive strips (Orthofile; SDC Switzerland, Lugano-Grancia, Switzerland). With each device, the operator intended to strip 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, or 0.4 mm on the mesial side of 15 teeth. The teeth were scanned before and after stripping with a 3-dimensional laser scanner. Superposition and measurement of stripped enamel on the most mesial point of the tooth were conducted with Viewbox software (dHal Software, Kifissia, Greece). The Wilcoxon signed rank test and the Kruskal-Wallis test were applied; statistical significance was set at alpha ≤ 0.05. RESULTS Large variations between the intended and the actual amounts of stripped enamel, and between stripping procedures, were observed. Significant differences were found at 0.1 mm of intended stripping (P ≤ 0.05) for the hand-pulled method and at 0.4 mm of intended stripping (P ≤ 0.001 to P = 0.05) for all methods. For all scenarios of enamel reduction, the actual amount of stripping was less than the predetermined and expected amount of stripping. The Kruskal-Wallis analysis showed no significant differences between the 3 methods. CONCLUSIONS There were variations in the stripped amounts of enamel, and the stripping technique did not appear to be a significant predictor of the actual amount of enamel reduction. In most cases, actual stripping was less than the intended amount of enamel reduction.

The present study was conducted to assess the interrelation between teat anatomy and machine milking in dairy buffaloes raised in Switzerland. A 3-min pre-stimulation induced milk ejection before cluster attachment in most cases and caused an optimal milk removal during machine milking. In an additional experiment, longitudinal cross-section ultrasound was obtained before and after a 3-min pre-stimulation. Teat wall thickness, teat diameter, cisternal diameter and teat canal length were evaluated. It was observed that 3-min pre-stimulation dramatically reduced teat canal length whereas all the other anatomical parameters remained unchanged. The vacuum needed to open the teat canal was also measured before and after a 3-min pre-stimulation by using a special teat cup with only the mouthpiece of the liner remaining on the top of the teat cup (no liner, no pulsation). Without pre-stimulation but after wetting the teat canal by stripping one squirt of milk out of the teat, no milk could be withdrawn with a vacuum up to 39 kPa. However, after pre-stimulation, milk flow occurred in all buffaloes at a vacuum between 16 and 38 kPa. In the last experiment, the teat tissue was examined in slaughtered buffaloes and compared with teat tissue of cows. No difference was noted in histological sections and teat canal length was similar in cows and buffaloes. Proximal to the teat canal, the teat did not pass into an open cistern but the lumen was collapsed. In conclusion, buffaloes need to be well pre-stimulated because the tissue above the teat canal provides additional teat closure before milk ejection. Therefore, milk can only be obtained after pre-stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Activation of the complement system and polymorphonuclear neutrophilic leukocytes plays a major role in mediating reperfusion injury after lung transplantation. We hypothesized that early interference with complement activation would reduce lung reperfusion injury after transplantation. METHODS: Unilateral left lung autotransplantation was performed in 6 sheep. After hilar stripping the left lung was flushed with Euro-Collins solution and preserved for 2 hours in situ at 15 degrees C. After reperfusion the right main bronchus and pulmonary artery were occluded, leaving the animal dependent on the reperfused lung (reperfused group). C1-esterase inhibitor group animals (n = 6) received 200 U/kg body weight of C1-esterase inhibitor as a short infusion, half 10 minutes before, the other half 10 minutes after reperfusion. Controls (n = 6) underwent hilar preparation only. Pulmonary function was assessed by alveolar-arterial oxygen difference and pulmonary vascular resistance. The release of beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase served as indicator of polymorphonuclear neutrophilic leukocyte activation. Extravascular lung water was an indicator for pulmonary edema formation. Biopsy specimens were taken from all groups 3 hours after reperfusion for light and electron microscopy. RESULTS: In the reperfused group, alveolar-arterial oxygen difference and pulmonary vascular resistance were significantly elevated after reperfusion. All animals developed frank alveolar edema. The biochemical marker beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase showed significant leukocyte activation. In the C1-esterase inhibitor group, alveolar-arterial oxygen difference, pulmonary vascular resistance, and the level of polymorphonuclear neutrophilic leukocyte activation were significantly lower. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with C1-esterase inhibitor reduces reperfusion injury and improves pulmonary function in this experimental model.

OBJECTIVE: Reperfusion injury is the main reason for early graft failure after lung transplantation. Inhibition of the adherence of polymorphonuclear leukocytes to activated endothelium by blocking L- and E-selectins (antibody EL-246) could potentially inhibit reperfusion injury. METHODS: Reperfusion injury was induced in a left lung autotransplant model in sheep. After hilar stripping the left lung was flushed with Euro-Collins solution and preserved for 2 h in situ at 15 degrees C. After reperfusion right main bronchus and pulmonary artery were occluded leaving the animal dependent on the reperfused lung (control, n = 6). Pulmonary function was assessed by alveolo-arterial oxygen difference (AaDO2) and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR), the chemiluminescence of isolated neutrophils, as well as the release of beta-N-acetyl-glucosaminidase (beta-NAG) served as indicator of neutrophilic activation. Extravascular lung water was an indicator for pulmonary edema formation. EL-246 group animals (n = 6) were treated additionally with 1 mg/kg BW of EL-246 given prior and during reperfusion. RESULTS: After 3 h of reperfusion five control animals developed alveolar edema compared to one animal in the EL-246 group (P = 0.08). AaDO2 (mm Hg) was significantly higher in the control compared to the EL-246 group (510 +/- 148 vs. 214 +/- 86). PVR (dyn x s x cm(-5)) was significantly increased in the control compared to the EL-246 group (656 +/- 240 vs. 317 +/- 87). Neutrophilic activation was significantly lower in the EL-246 group. Extravascular lung water was significantly lower compared to control (6.88 +/- 1.0 vs. 13.4 +/- 2.8 g/g blood-free lung weight). CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with EL-246 results in improved pulmonary function and less in vivo PMN activation in this experimental model. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the possible role of selectin blockade in amelioration of reperfusion injury in human lung transplantation.

Mycoplasma bovis causes mastitis in dairy cows and is associated with pneumonia and polyarthritis in cattle. The present investigation included a retrospective case–control study to identify potential herd-level risk factors for M. bovis associated disease, and a prospective cohort study to evaluate the course of clinical disease in M. bovis infected dairy cattle herds in Switzerland. Eighteen herds with confirmed M. bovis cases were visited twice within an average interval of 75 d. One control herd with no history of clinical mycoplasmosis, matched for herd size, was randomly selected within a 10 km range for each case herd. Animal health data, production data, information on milking and feeding-management, housing and presence of potential stress- factors were collected. Composite quarter milk samples were aseptically collected from all lactating cows and 5% of all animals within each herd were sampled by nasal swabs. Organ samples of culled diseased cows were collected when logistically possible. All samples were analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In case herds, incidence risk of pneumonia, arthritis and clinical mastitis prior to the first visit and incidence rates of clinical mastitis and clinical pneumonia between the two visits was estimated. Logistic regression was used to identify potential herd-level risk factors for M. bovis infection. In case herds, incidence risk of M. bovis mastitis prior to the first visit ranged from 2 to 15%, whereas 2 to 35% of the cows suffered from clinical pneumonia within the 12 months prior to the first herd visit. The incidence rates of mycoplasmal mastitis and clinical pneumonia between the two herd visits were low in case herds (0–0.1 per animal year at risk and 0.1-0.6 per animal year at risk, respectively). In the retrospective-case-control study high mean milk production, appropriate stimulation until milk-let-down, fore-stripping, animal movements (cattle shows and trade), presence of stress-factors, and use of a specific brand of milking equipment, were identified as potential herd-level risk factors. The prospective cohort study revealed a decreased incidence of clinical disease within three months and prolonged colonization of the nasal cavity by M. bovis in young stock.

Climate plays an important role in controlling rates of weathering and weathered regolith production. Regolith production functions, however, seldom take climate parameters into account. Based on a climate-dependent weathered regolith production model, at low denudation rates, relative regolith thicknesses are less sensitive to changes in precipitation rates, while at high denudation rates, small changes in climatic parameters can result in complete stripping of hillslopes. This pattern is compounded by the long residence times and system response times associated with low denudation rates, and vice versa. As others have shown, the transition between regolith-mantled and bedrock slopes is dependent on the ratio of denudation to production. Here, we further suggest that this is itself a function of precipitation rate and temperature. We suggest that climatic parameters can be easily incorporated into existing soil production models and that such additions improve the predictive power of soil production models. Global scale impacts modify the physical or thermal state of a substantial fraction of a target asteroid. Specific effects include accretion, family formation, reshaping, mixing and layering, shock and frictional heating, fragmentation, material compaction, dilatation, stripping of mantle and crust, and seismic degradation. Deciphering the complicated record of global scale impacts, in asteroids and meteorites, will lead us to understand the original planet-forming process and its resultant populations, and their evolution in time as collisions became faster and fewer. We provide a brief overview of these ideas, and an introduction to models.
