Glucagonlike peptide-1 receptors (GLP-1R) play an increasingly important role in endocrine gastrointestinal tumor management. In particular, virtually all benign insulinomas express GLP-1R in high density. Exendin-4 is a GLP-1 analog that has a longer half-life than GLP-1. Targeting GLP-1R by (111)In-DOTA-exendin-4 or (111)In-DPTA-exendin-4 offers a new approach that permits the successful localization of small benign insulinomas. It is likely that this new noninvasive technique has the potential to replace the invasive localization by selective arterial stimulation and venous sampling.

Schizophrenia patients show abnormalities in a broad range of task demands. Therefore, an explanation common to all these abnormalities has to be sought independently of any particular task, ideally in the brain dynamics before a task takes place or during resting state. For the neurobiological investigation of such baseline states, EEG microstate analysis is particularly well suited, because it identifies subsecond global states of stable connectivity patterns directly related to the recruitment of different types of information processing modes (e.g., integration of top-down and bottom-up information). Meanwhile, there is an accumulation of evidence that particular microstate networks are selectively affected in schizophrenia. To obtain an overall estimate of the effect size of these microstate abnormalities, we present a systematic meta-analysis over all studies available to date relating EEG microstates to schizophrenia. Results showed medium size effects for two classes of microstates, namely, a class labeled C that was found to be more frequent in schizophrenia and a class labeled D that was found to be shortened. These abnormalities may correspond to core symptoms of schizophrenia, e.g., insufficient reality testing and self-monitoring as during auditory verbal hallucinations. As interventional studies have shown that these microstate features may be systematically affected using antipsychotic drugs or neurofeedback interventions, these findings may help introducing novel diagnostic and treatment options.

Sirtuins (SIRT1-7) are a highly conserved family of NAD(+)-dependent enzymes that control the activity of histone and nonhistone regulatory proteins. SIRT1 is purposed to promote longevity and to suppress the initiation of some cancers. Nevertheless, SIRT1 is reported to function as a tumor suppressor as well as an oncogenic protein. Our data show that compared with normal liver or surrounding tumor tissue, SIRT1 is strongly overexpressed in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In addition, human HCC cell lines (Hep3B, HepG2, HuH7, HLE, HLF, HepKK1, skHep1) were screened for the expression of the sirtuin family members and only SIRT1 was consistently overexpressed compared with normal hepatocytes. To determine its effect on HCC growth, SIRT1 activity was inhibited either with lentiviruses expressing short hairpin RNAs or with the small molecule inhibitor, cambinol. Knockdown or inhibition of SIRT1 activity had a cytostatic effect, characterized by an altered morphology, impaired proliferation, an increased expression of differentiation markers, and cellular senescence. In an orthotopic xenograft model, knockdown of SIRT1 resulted in 50% fewer animals developing tumors and cambinol treatment resulted in an overall lower tumor burden. Taken together, our data show that inhibition of SIRT1 in HCC cells impairs their proliferation in vitro and tumor formation in vivo. These data suggest that SIRT1 expression positively influences the growth of HCC and support further studies aimed to block its activity alone or in combination as a novel treatment strategy.

Tef, Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter, is the most important cereal in Ethiopia. Tef is cultivated by more than five million small-scale farmers annually and constitutes the staple food for more than half of the population of 80 million. The crop is preferred by both farmers and consumers due to its beneficial traits associated with its agronomy and utilization. The genetic and phenotypic diversity of tef in Ethiopia is a national treasure of potentially global importance. In order for this diversity to be effectively conserved and utilized, a better understanding at the genomic level is necessary. In the recent years, tef has become the subject of genomic research in Ethiopia and abroad. Genomic-assisted tef improvement holds tremendous potential for improving productivity, thereby benefiting the smallholder farmers who have cultivated and relied on the crop for thousands of years. It is hoped that such research endeavours will provide solutions to some of the age-old problems of tef's husbandry. In this review, we provide a brief description of the genesis and progress of tef genomic research to date, suggest ways to utilize the genomic tools developed so far, discuss the potential of genomics to enable sustainable conservation and use of tef genetic diversity and suggest opportunities for the future research.
