Parylenes are poly(p-xylylene) polymers that are widely used as moisture barriers and in biomedicine because of their good biocompatibility. We have investigated MeV ion beam lithography using 16O+ ions for writing defined patterns in Parylene-C, which is evaluated as a coating material for the Cochlear Implant (CI) electrode array, a neuroprosthesis to treat some forms of deafness. Parylene-C and -F on silicon and glass substrates as well as 50 μm thick PTFE were irradiated to different fluences (1×1013-1×10161×1013-1×1016 1 MeV 16O+ ions cm−2) through aperture masks under high vacuum and a low pressure (<10−3 mbar) oxygen atmosphere. Biocompatibility of the irradiated and unirradiated surfaces was tested by cell-counting to determine the proliferation of murine spiral ganglion cells. The results reveal that an oxygen ion beam can be used to pattern Parylene-C and -F without using a liquid solvent developer in a similar manner to PTFE but with a ∼25× smaller removal rate. Biocompatibility tests showed no difference in cell adhesion between irradiated and unirradiated areas or ion fluence dependence. Coating the Parylene surface with an adhesion-promoting protein mixture had a much greater effect on cell proliferation.

Statistical shape models (SSMs) have been used widely as a basis for segmenting and interpreting complex anatomical structures. The robustness of these models are sensitive to the registration procedures, i.e., establishment of a dense correspondence across a training data set. In this work, two SSMs based on the same training data set of scoliotic vertebrae, and registration procedures were compared. The first model was constructed based on the original binary masks without applying any image pre- and post-processing, and the second was obtained by means of a feature preserving smoothing method applied to the original training data set, followed by a standard rasterization algorithm. The accuracies of the correspondences were assessed quantitatively by means of the maximum of the mean minimum distance (MMMD) and Hausdorf distance (H(D)). Anatomical validity of the models were quantified by means of three different criteria, i.e., compactness, specificity, and model generalization ability. The objective of this study was to compare quasi-identical models based on standard metrics. Preliminary results suggest that the MMMD distance and eigenvalues are not sensitive metrics for evaluating the performance and robustness of SSMs.

Mucosal pH (pHi) is influenced by local perfusion and metabolism (mucosal-arterial Pco2 gradient, DeltaPco2), systemic metabolic acidosis (arterial bicarbonate), and respiration (arterial Pco2). We determined these components of pHi and their relation to outcome during the first 24 h of intensive care. We studied 103 patients with acute respiratory or circulatory failure (age, 63 +/- 2 [mean +/- SEM]; Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score, 20 +/- 1; Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score, 8 +/- 0). pHi, and the effects of bicarbonate and arterial and mucosal Pco2 on pHi, were assessed at admission, 6, and 24 h. pHi was reduced (at admission, 7.27 +/- 0.01) due to low arterial bicarbonate and increased DeltaPco2. Low pHi (<7.32) at admission (n = 58; mortality, 29% vs. 13% in those with pHi >/=7.32 at admission; P = 0.061) was associated with an increased DeltaPco2 in 59% of patients (mortality, 47% vs. 4% for patients with low pHi and normal DeltaPco2; P = 0.0003). An increased versus normal DeltaPco2, regardless of pHi, was associated with increased mortality at admission (51% vs. 5%; P < 0.0001; n = 39) and at 6 h (34% vs. 13%; P = 0.016; n = 45). A delayed normalization or persistently low pHi (n = 47) or high DeltaPco2 (n = 25) was associated with high mortality (low pHi [34%] vs. high DeltaPco2 [60%]; P = 0.046). In nonsurvivors, hypocapnia increased pHi at baseline, 6, and 24 h (all P masks mucosal acidosis. Inadequate tissue perfusion may persist despite stable hemodynamics and contributes to poor outcome.

The possibility that disruptive sexual selection alone can cause sympatric speciation is currently a subject of much debate. The initial difficulty for new and rare ornament phenotypes to invade a population, and the stabilisation of the resulting polymorphism in trait and preference make this hypothesis problematic. Recent theoretical work indicates that the invasion is facilitated if males with the new phenotype have an initial advantage in male-male competition. We studied a pair of sympatric incipient species of cichlids from Lake Victoria, in which the red (Pundamilia nyererei) and blue males (P. pundamilia) vigorously defend territories. Other studies suggested that red phenotypes may have repeatedly invaded blue populations in independent episodes of speciation. We hypothesised that red coloration confers an advantage in male-male competition, assisting red phenotypes to invade. To test this hypothesis, we staged contests between red and blue males from a population where the phenotypes are interbreeding morphs or incipient species. We staged contests under both white and green light condition. Green light effectively masks the difference between red and blue coloration. Red males dominated blue males under white light, but their competitive advantage was significantly diminished under green light. Contests were shorter when colour differences were visible. Experience of blue males with red males did not affect the outcome of a contest. The advantage of red over blue in combats may assist the red phenotype to invade blue populations. The apparently stable co-existence of red and blue incipient species in many populations of Lake Victoria cichlids is discussed.
