This survey was conducted in developing a final specialized examination for all arts therapists in Switzerland by the Council of Swiss Arts Therapy Associations (CSATA). Forty-eight generic key competencies (GKC) were sent to all 1235 arts therapists in five different disciplines in Switzerland (response 47.5%) and to 384 referring professionals and employers (RPE) listed by therapists (response 42%). The mean importance of GKC was rated high (4 points of 5) by practitioners and RPE. Different opinions on importance of GKC in disciplines included artistic ability and psychotherapeutic relative to medical orientation. The training of competencies was rated lower by practitioners (3.48 points) and different in the eight competence categories and five disciplines. Areas of weak training were identified. The performance of GKC was rated by referring professionals equally to its importance (mean +0.3 points) and showed a good understanding of competencies by RPE. Judging of performance was difficult for RPE in more than 20% of items. The results provide criteria for detailed outcome assessments and the advancement of a final examination for arts therapists in Switzerland.

Background: The aim of the present study was to contributing to researching physiological effects of arts speech therapy by (i) investigating effects of inner and heard speech on cerebral hemodynamics and oxygenation, and (ii) analyzing if these changes were affected by alterations of the arterial carbon dioxide pressure (PaCO2). Methods: In 29 healthy adult volunteers we measured changes in cerebral absolute oxyhemoglobin ([O2Hb]), deoxyhemoglobin ([HHb]), total hemoglobin ([tHb]) concentrations and tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) (over the left and right anterior prefrontal cortex (PFC)) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) as well as changes in end-tidal CO2 (PETCO2) using capnography. Each subject performed six different tasks: three types of task modalities, i.e. inner speech, heard speech from a person and heard speech from a record, and, two recitation texts, i.e. hexameter and alliteration on different days according to a randomized crossover design. Statistical analysis was applied to the differences between the baseline, two task and four recovery periods. The two brain hemispheres, i.e. left and right PFC, and six tasks were tested separately. Results: During the tasks we found in general a decrease in PETCO2 (significantly only for inner speech), StO2, [O2Hb], [tHb] as well as in an increase in [HHb]. There was a significant difference between hexameter and alliteration. Particularly, the changes in [tHb] at the left PFC during tasks and after them were statistically different. Furthermore we found significant relations between changes in [O2Hb], [HHb], [tHb] or StO2 and the participants’ age, the baseline PETCO2, or certain speech tasks. Conclusions: Changes in breathing (hyperventilation) during the tasks led to lower PaCO2 (hypocapnia) for inner speech. During heard speech no significant changes in PaCO2 occurred, but the decreases in StO2, [O2Hb], [tHb] suggest that changes in PaCO2 were also relevant here. Different verse types (hexameter, alliteration) led to different changes in [tHb]. Consequently, StO2, [O2Hb], [HHb] and [tHb] are affected by interplay of both PaCO2 reactivity and task dependent functional brain activity.

Purpose: Artistic speech therapy is applied in anthroposophically extended medicine to treat several diseases. The aim is to understand the physiology by investigating the effect of inner and heard speech on brain hemodynamics and oxygenation and analyzing whether these changes were affected by changes in arterial carbon dioxide pressure. Knowledge taught at schools, everyday skills and practical know-how. The relevancy of formation for local elites and the corporative self-government of Early Modern Switzerland Daniel Schläppi, Bern There were different kinds of rural elites in Early Modern Switzerland. The diverse parts of the country developed in very dissimilar ways politically and economically. Some regions were dominated by traditional types of agriculture. Some territories were ruled by major cities. In some of the rural Cantons like Uri, Schwyz, Unterwalden, Glarus and Zug a political elite took control over generations and practiced a cultural lifestyle comparable to the famous aristocracies in cities like Bern, Basel, Freiburg, Luzern, Solothurn and Zurich. Intense proto-industrialization formed a completely different sort of elite with strong affinities to industry and trade in other regions. Meanwhile the habitants of the valley close-by stayed farmers like their ancestors (like in Appenzell). In the most conservative parts of the country mercenary business played an important role till the very end of the Ancien Regime and even furthermore. In summery the variety of historical circumstances caused heterogeneous elites all over. Such socio-political diversity provoked a variety of educational backgrounds. I an academic understanding of the term we know only little about literacy in local rural elites. But there is strong evidence that a lively culture of reading and story-telling existed. This means that even simple countrymen seem to have been in possession of some books. The organisation and capacity of the school system is subject of controversial discussions among up to date researchers. The state of research makes us suppose that the people designed to political careers learned their essential skills not only in school but also in everyday life or on the job. Based on the fact that every community and countless public corporations managed their affairs by their own it’s evident that the local elite’s key-players had a large repertoire of techniques and skills like writing, calculating, strategic thinking or knowledge of oral tradition, old usage or important rituals. Unfortunately the historical actors left not that many sources that would tell us precisely how knowledge and know-how were transferred in former times. Hardly any private account books or common correspondence have been conserved. But a huge bunch of sources that originate from corporative self-administration shows us that most local elites were well-educated and had the necessary skills anyway. Above all other sources like for instance the «Topographische Beschreibungen» (topographic descriptions) that were initiated by the «Ökonomische Gesellschaft» of Berne since the sixties of the 18th century provide an insight into pre-modern classrooms. More important information on the historical formation-reality can be gained by the autobiography of the famous poor peasant Ulrich Bräker (1735‒1798) or some of the novels by Albert Bitzius (1797‒1854, better known as Jeremias Gotthelf). The pedagogic writings by Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746‒1827) and the influences by his mentors Johann Rudolf Tschiffeli (1716‒1780) or Philipp Emanuel von Fellenberg (1771‒1884) are quite illustrative as well.

Informationskompetenz ist heute als Begriff , Konzept und praktisches Tätigkeitsfeld von Bibliotheken weltweit etabliert. Entstehung, Verbreitung und Entwicklung von „Informationskompetenz“ im deutschsprachigen Raum stehen in engem Zusammenhang mit dem in den USA und international seit den 1980er Jahren diskutierten und praktisch umgesetzten Konzept der „Information Literacy“. Auch wenn die beiden Begriffe in der Regel gleichbedeutend verwendet werden, zeigt ein Vergleich der vorwiegend aus englischsprachigen Ländern – insbesondere den USA, Australien und Großbritannien – stammenden Literatur zur Information Literacy mit deutschsprachigen Publikationen zur Informationskompetenz neben zahlreichen Gemeinsamkeiten auch unterschiedliche Tendenzen und Schwerpunkte, die sich einerseits auf die zeitverschobene historische Entwicklung, andererseits auf unterschiedliche bildungs- und berufspolitische, institutionelle und terminologische Rahmenbedingungen zurückführen lassen. Einige dieser Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede werden aus historischer Perspektive sowie mit Blick auf aktuelle inhaltliche Themen und Desiderate näher beleuchtet.

The differential safety and efficacy profiles of sirolimus-eluting stents when implanted in patients with multivessel coronary artery disease who have increased body mass indexes (BMIs) compared with those with normal BMIs are largely unknown. This study evaluated the impact of BMI on 1-year outcomes in patients with multivessel coronary artery disease treated with sirolimus-eluting stents as part of the Arterial Revascularization Therapies Study Part II (ARTS II). From February to November 2003, 607 patients were included at 45 centers; 176 patients had normal BMIs (<25 kg/m(2)), 289 were overweight (> or =25 and < or =30 kg/m(2)), and 142 were obese (>30 kg/m(2)). At 30 days, the cumulative incidence of the primary combined end point of death, myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular accident, and repeat revascularization (major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events) was 3.4% in the group with normal BMIs, 3.1% in overweight patients, and 2.8% in obese patients (p = 0.76). At 1 year, the cumulative incidence of major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events was 10.8%, 11.8%, and 7.0% in the normal BMI, overweight, and obese groups, respectively (p = 0.31). In conclusion, BMI had no impact on 1-year clinical outcomes in patients with multivessel coronary artery disease treated with sirolimus-eluting stents in ARTS II.

THE INFLUENCE of combat sport practice on behaviour, attitude, personality and other factors was, and still remains, a research topic of great interest as well as conflicting points of view. Findings are as yet inconclusive since a direct or causal effect is difficult to establish and other factors external to the individual, such as the instructor’s coaching style, also need to be taken into consideration. Furthermore, the wide range of disciplines pertaining to the category combat sports differ from each other on a number of characteristics, such as the extent of physical contact or competition rules, and in fact, attempts have been made to distinguish between various sub-types (e.g. Trulson, 1986). A common distinction made is that between the traditional martial arts, which place emphasis on the art’s philosophy, its traditions and hierarchy (e.g. traditional karate, aikido) and the modern (or Western) combat sports (e.g. boxing, Mixed Martial Arts). An ongoing debate exists about the potential positive and/or negative influence of combat sport practice in comparison to other sport disciplines that do not include this element of fighting and direct aggression. On the one hand, combat sports have been presented by some researchers and sport practitioners as a means of promoting positive social and individual behavior, such as in Theeboom, De Knop and Wylleman’s (2008) evaluation of a martial arts Programme for socially disadvantaged youths in Belgium. Results revealed a positive effect of this project; however, it also highlighted the crucial role played by the instructors or leaders of such programmes. In another intervention using martial arts, Trulson (1986) reported a positive effect of a six month traditional martial art (Korean Tae Kwon Do) intervention with male juvenile delinquents including a reduction in aggressiveness and anxiety, thus confirming the positive influence of such an activity. Nevertheless, this effect was not observed in the other group participating in a modern Adaptation of this martial art led by the same instructor, where the philosophical aspect of this discipline was not emphasised. Moreover, an opposite effect was ascertained in this case where an increased tendency towards delinquency was reported. These results support the distinction between the various types of combat sports together with the way this sport is presented and taught by the instructor.
