The aim of this study was to evaluate, using visual assessment, an experimental optical sensor measuring perpendicular reflection intensity (PRI) as an indicator of enamel caries lesion activity/inactivity. Forty teeth with either an active or an inactive enamel lesion were selected from a pool of extracted teeth. Each tooth was cut into halves, with a clinically sound half and a half with a non-cavitated enamel lesion. After gentle plaque removal, the teeth were kept moistened. The lesions were then photographed and a defined measuring site per lesion was chosen and indicated with an arrow on a printout. Independently, the chosen site was visually assessed for lesion activity, and its glossiness was measured with PRI assessment. Surface roughness (SR) was assessed with optical profilometry using a confocal microscope. Visual assessment and PRI were repeated after several weeks and a reliability analysis was performed. For enamel lesions visually scored as active versus inactive, significantly different values were obtained with both PRI and SR. PRI values of the clinically sound control surfaces were significantly different only from active lesions. Generally, inactive lesions had the same glossiness and the same roughness as the sound control surfaces. The reliabilities for visual assessment (? = 0.89) and for PRI (ICC = 0.86) were high. It is concluded that, within the limits of this study, PRI can be regarded as a promising tool for quantitative enamel lesion activity assessment. There is scope and potential for the PRI device to be considerably improved for in vivo use.

Blue-light fundus autofluorescence (FAF) imaging is currently widely used for assessing dry age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). However, at this wavelength, the fovea appears as circular zone of marked hypofluorescence, due to the absorption of macular pigment (MP). This dark spot could be misinterpreted as an atrophic area and could lead to difficulties in identifying small, central changes. The purpose of the study was to analyze differences in image quality, FAF patterns, and lesion size, when using conventional blue-light (Λ(1) = 488 nm) and green-light (Λ(2) = 514 nm) FAF.

We present an automatic method to segment brain tissues from volumetric MRI brain tumor images. The method is based on non-rigid registration of an average atlas in combination with a biomechanically justified tumor growth model to simulate soft-tissue deformations caused by the tumor mass-effect. The tumor growth model, which is formulated as a mesh-free Markov Random Field energy minimization problem, ensures correspondence between the atlas and the patient image, prior to the registration step. The method is non-parametric, simple and fast compared to other approaches while maintaining similar accuracy. It has been evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively with promising results on eight datasets comprising simulated images and real patient data.

In this study, we evaluated the potential use of entomopathogenic nematodes as a control for the beetle Aethina tumida Murray (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae). In particular, we conducted 1) four screening bioassays to determine nematode (seven species, 10 total strains tested) and application level effects on A. tumida larvae and pupae, 2) a generational persistence bioassay to determine whether single inoculations with nematodes would control multiple generations of A. tumida larvae in treated soil, and 3) a field bioassay to determine whether the nematodes would remain efficacious in the field. In the screening bioassays, nematode efficacy varied significantly by tested nematode and the infective juvenile (IJ) level at which they were applied. Although nematode virulence was moderate in screening bioassays 1-3 (0 - 68% A. tumida mortality), A. tumida mortality approached higher levels in screening bioassay 4 (nearly 100% after 39 d) that suggest suitable applicability of some of the test nematodes as field controls for A. tumida. In the generational persistence bioassay, Steinernema Hobrave Cabanillas, Poinar & Raulston 7-12 strain and Heterorhabditis indica Poinar, Karunaka & David provided adequate A. tumida control for 19 wk after a single soil inoculation (76-94% mortality in A. tumida pupae). In the field bioassay, the same two nematode species also showed high virulence toward pupating A. tumida (88-100%) mortality. Our data suggest that nematode use may be an integral component of an integrated pest management scheme aimed at reducing A. tumida populations in bee colonies to tolerable levels.

Vessel angulation and large changes in vessel geometry after stent implantation have been associated with an increased risk of target lesion failure (TLF) using bare-metal stents. Second-generation drug-eluting stents (DES)offer superior conformability and inhibition of neointima. The aim of the study is to investigate the relationship between pre and post-implant vessel geometry and the occurrence of TLF at 1 year after treatment with second-generation DES; and to compare the conformability of Resolute and Xience stents.

This paper will review the literature in order to define lesion characteristics that determine decision for surgical or endovascular therapy in patients with chronic critical limb ischemia (CLI). The typical pattern of disease is multilevel, infrainguinal disease. The great majority of patients with CLI can be treated by endovascular means, and the pathoanatomical pattern of disease dictates the choice of treatment modality. Long iliac artery occlusions, in particular, if associated with common femoral artery pathology and long superficial femoral artery occlusions crossing the knee joint so far remain a domain of surgery. However, there is an ongoing shift from surgery to endovascular treatment.

The surgical approach to parotid tumors is different for benign and malignant neoplasms, but the clinical symptoms do not correlate well with histology. Difficulties in tumor classification also arise in imaging modalities, in which sonography has the lowest and MR imaging, the highest accuracy. The purpose of this study was to review our experience using conventional MR imaging of the neck in the evaluation of parotid tumors and to evaluate which MR imaging findings are best able to predict malignant histology.

The synthesis of a caged RNA phosphoramidite building block containing the oxidatively damaged base 5-hydroxycytidine (5-HOrC) has been accomplished. To determine the effect of this highly mutagenic lesion on complementary base recognition and coding properties, this building block was incorporated into a 12-mer oligoribonucleotide for Tm and CD measurements and a 31-mer template strand for primer extension experiments with HIV-, AMV- and MMLV-reverse transcriptase (RT). In UV-melting experiments, we find an unusual biphasic transition with two distinct Tm's when 5-HOrC is paired against a DNA or RNA complement with the base guanine in opposing position. The higher Tm closely matches that of a C-G base pair while the lower is close to that of a C-A mismatch. In single nucleotide extension reactions, we find substantial misincorporation of dAMP and to a lesser extent dTMP, with dAMP almost equaling that of the parent dGMP in the case of HIV-RT. A working hypothesis for the biphasic melting transition does not invoke tautomeric variability of 5-HOrC but rather local structural perturbations of the base pair at low temperature induced by interactions of the 5-HO group with the phosphate backbone. The properties of this RNA damage is discussed in the context of its putative biological function.
