The caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV) is a lentivirus that persistently infects goats and sheep. The finding thatCAEV and Maedi-Visna viruses frequently cross the species barrier between goats and sheep, and vice versa, has changedour view of the epidemiology of these viruses that are now referred to assmall ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV).CAEV is transmitted from infected mothers to their offspring, mainly via ingestion of infected colostrum and milk. Thispermits the implementation of control measures based on the segregation ofnewborn kids immediately after birth thatsuccessfully cut the seroprevalence in infected flocks, eliminating CAEV induced clinical disease. CAEV induces overtpathology in about one third of the infected animals. The frequency of affected animals varies in different goat families, pointing to an important genetic component in this disease. The principal manifestations areencephalitis and interstitialpneumonia in young animals, whereas arthritis and mastitispredominate in adult goats. The immunopathologicalmechanisms leading to diseaseare to date unclear and involve the principal components ofthe immune system, i.e., theprofessional antigen presenting cells, which are the principal target of CAEV, and whose activity, e.g., cytokine production,is modulated by the infection, and the B- and T-cell immune responses that are alsomanipulated by the virus. In vivo, infected animals usually have low viral loads, indicating that virus replication istightly restricted by mechanisms thatremain unclear. Finally, the complex biology of SRLV makes them a great challenge for diagnostic laboratories. In this brief review, the literature pertinent toall these aspects is summarized and discussed.

This article describes the structure and utilization of a computerized databank system for WHO mortality data. This system makes available "at finger-tips" data which previously were published by WHO in its blue volumes. The data can be handled much more flexible. At the moment the system provides information on age-standardized rates (direct standardization), total number of cases, as well as cover per age-group and year for about a hundred countries. The time period covered is 1950-1985, with exceptions for data which are not available to WHO.

This paper is focused on the integration of state-of-the-art technologies in the fields of telecommunications, simulation algorithms, and data mining in order to develop a Type 1 diabetes patient's semi to fully-automated monitoring and management system. The main components of the system are a glucose measurement device, an insulin delivery system (insulin injection or insulin pumps), a mobile phone for the GPRS network, and a PDA or laptop for the Internet. In the medical environment, appropriate infrastructure for storage, analysis and visualizing of patients' data has been implemented to facilitate treatment design by health care experts.

In this paper we propose a variational approach for multimodal image registration based on the diffeomorphic demons algorithm. Diffeomorphic demons has proven to be a robust and efficient way for intensity-based image registration. However, the main drawback is that it cannot deal with multiple modalities. We propose to replace the standard demons similarity metric (image intensity differences) by point-wise mutual information (PMI) in the energy function. By comparing the accuracy between our PMI based diffeomorphic demons and the B-Spline based free-form deformation approach (FFD) on simulated deformations, we show the proposed algorithm performs significantly better.

Java Enterprise Applications (JEAs) are large systems that integrate multiple technologies and programming languages. Transactions in JEAs simplify the development of code that deals with failure recovery and multi-user coordination by guaranteeing atomicity of sets of operations. The heterogeneous nature of JEAs, however, can obfuscate conceptual errors in the application code, and in particular can hide incorrect declarations of transaction scope. In this paper we present a technique to expose and analyze the application transaction scope in JEAs by merging and analyzing information from multiple sources. We also present several novel visualizations that aid in the analysis of transaction scope by highlighting anomalies in the specification of transactions and violations of architectural constraints. We have validated our approach on two versions of a large commercial case study.

During the past 20 years or so, more has become known about the properties of khat, its pharmacology, physiological and psychological effects on humans. However, at the same time its reputation of social and recreational use in traditional contexts has hindered the dissemination of knowledge about its detrimental effects in terms of mortality. This paper focuses on this particular deficit and adds to the knowledge-base by reviewing the scant literature that does exist on mortality associated with the trade and use of khat. We sought all peer-reviewed papers relating to deaths associated with khat. From an initial list of 111, we identified 15 items meeting our selection criteria. Examination of these revealed 61 further relevant items. These were supplemented with published reports, newspaper and other media reports. A conceptual framework was then developed for classifying mortality associated with each stage of the plant's journey from its cultivation, transportation, consumption, to its effects on the human body. The model is demonstrated with concrete examples drawn from the above sources. These highlight a number of issues for which more substantive statistical data are needed, including population-based studies of the physiological and psychological determinants of khat-related fatalities. Khat-consuming communities, and health professionals charged with their care should be more aware of the physiological and psychological effects of khat, together with the risks for morbidity and mortality associated with its use. There is also a need for information to be collected at international and national levels on other causes of death associated with khat cultivation, transportation, and trade. Both these dimensions need to be understood.

A confocal imaging and image processing scheme is introduced to visualize and evaluate the spatial distribution of spectral information in tissue. The image data are recorded using a confocal laser-scanning microscope equipped with a detection unit that provides high spectral resolution. The processing scheme is based on spectral data, is less error-prone than intensity-based visualization and evaluation methods, and provides quantitative information on the composition of the sample. The method is tested and validated in the context of the development of dermal drug delivery systems, introducing a quantitative uptake indicator to compare the performances of different delivery systems is introduced. A drug penetration study was performed in vitro. The results show that the method is able to detect, visualize and measure spectral information in tissue. In the penetration study, uptake efficiencies of different experiment setups could be discriminated and quantitatively described. The developed uptake indicator is a step towards a quantitative assessment and, in a more general view apart from pharmaceutical research, provides valuable information on tissue composition. It can potentially be used for clinical in vitro and in vivo applications.

Axillary clearance in early breast cancer aims to improve locoregional control and provide staging information but is associated with undesirable morbidity. We therefore investigated whether avoiding axillary surgery in older women would result in improved quality of life (QL) with similar disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS).
