PURPOSE: To demonstrate the feasibility of direct angioscopic visualization of an optional inferior vena cava (IVC) filter in situ and during retrieval. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Angioscopy was used for direct visualization of optional IVC filters in six sheep. Cavograms were obtained before the filters were retrieved. After successful filter retrieval, segmental IVC perfusion was performed to evaluate filter retrieval-related damage to the IVC wall. Therefore, all branch vessels were ligated before the IVC segment was flushed with normal saline solution until it was fully distended. Then, the inflow was terminated and the IVC segment observed for deflation. Subsequently, the IVC was harvested en bloc, dissected, and inspected macroscopically. RESULTS: The visibility of IVC filters at angioscopy was excellent. During the retrieval procedure, filter collapse and retraction into the sheath were clearly demonstrated. Angioscopy provided additional information to that obtained with cavography, demonstrating adherent material in three filters. Three filters in place for more than 2 months could not be retrieved because the filter legs were incorporated into the IVC wall. After filter retrieval, there was no perforation at segmental IVC perfusion. At macroscopic inspection of the IVC lumen, a small piece of detached endothelium was found in one animal. CONCLUSION: Angioscopy enabled the direct evaluation of optional IVC filters in situ and during retrieval. Compared with cavography, angioscopy provided additional information about the filter in situ and the retrieval procedure. Future applications of this technique could include studies of filter migration, compression, and clot-trapping efficacy.

Beta1-integrins (beta1) represent cell surface receptors which mediate cell-matrix and cell-cell interactions. Fässler and Meyer described chimeric mice containing transgenic cells that express the LacZ gene instead of the beta1 gene. They observed beta1-negative cells in all germ layers at embryonic day E 8.5. Later in development, using a glucose phosphate isomerase assay of homogenized tissue samples, high levels of transgenic cells were found in skeletal muscle and gut, low levels in lung, heart, and kidney and none in the liver and spleen (Fässler and Meyer 1995). In order to study which cell types require beta1 during development of the primitive gut including its derivatives, chimeric fetuses containing 15 to 25% transgenic cells were obtained at days E 14.5 and E 15.5. They were LacZ (beta-galactosidase) stained "en bloc" and cross-sectioned head to tail. In esophagus, trachea, lung, stomach, hindgut, and the future urinary bladder, we observed various mesoderm-derived beta1-negative cells (e.g. fibroblasts, chondrocytes, endothelial cells, and smooth muscle cells) but no beta1-negative epithelial cells. Since the epithelia of lung, esophagus, trachea, stomach, hindgut, and urinary bladder are derived from the endodermal gut tube, we hypothesize that beta1 is essential for the development and/or survival of the epithelia of the fore- and hindgut and its derivatives.

The present study focused on the relations between the self-efficacy, social self-concept, time perspectives, school investment and academic achievement of students in four different European countries and in different adolescence periods. A total of 1623 students completed questionnaires. The relations between the concepts proved not to be specific to the Western or to the former Communist bloc countries studied. The expected general decline in investment and academic achievement over the adolescence period showed up in all four countries studied. Contrary to our hypothesis, however, this decline could not be explained by growing influences of either social self-concept or time perspectives regarding personal development on their investment. In fact, the effects of social self-concept were strongest for the youngest adolescence group. Students’ social self-concept was the best predictor for their investment, while self-efficacy proved to predict academic achievement best in all adolescence periods.

Partial phallectomy or en bloc resection are surgical methods to address pathological conditions of the penis and/or prepuce including neoplasia, trauma, habronemiasis, chronic paraphimosis or permanent penile paralysis, and priapism. Haemorrhage associated with urination is a common complication observed after penile surgery but usually resolves spontaneously without specific treatment. This report describes a case of post urination haemorrhage (PUH) that recurred with each urination and persisted without significant improvement for a period of 2 weeks following en bloc resection of the penis and the prepuce. A perineal incision (PI) into the corpus spongiosum of the penis (CSP) resolved PUH by decreasing the blood pressure in the CSP distal to the PI. We propose that PI of the CSP can be an effective method to address PUH after penile surgery and may decrease time of hospitalisation for horses affected with PUH after phallectomy procedures.
