The Codex Biblioteca Casanatense 1409 which has for a long time been neg- lected in Parzival scholarship, transmits German translations of three continuations of Chre ́tien de Troyes‘ Roman de Perceval ou Le Conte du Graal together with the last two books (XV/XVI) of Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Parzival. This article supports the for- merly casually made assumption that the Casanatense manuscript is in fact a direct copy of Codex Donaueschingen 97, the so called Rappoltsteiner Parzifal. As is to be shown, marks in the Donaueschingen codex, as well as significant copying errors in the Casanatense text and its treatment of initials suggest a direct relationship of the two witnesses. The notion of ,writing scene‘ (Schreibszene) with its implications of linguistic semantics, instrumentality, gesture and self reflection, proposed in modern literary scholarship, can help to understand peculiarities of the copying process in the Casanatensis, such as the numerous conceptual abbreviations and the adaptations in the handling of headings. In the final part of the article, the hypothesis is corroborated, that the copy of the Casa- natensis might have been produced in the surroundings of Lamprecht von Brunn (ca. 1320–1399), bishop of Strasburg and Bamberg, and counsellor of the emperor Charles IV.

In the present study the challenge of analyzing complex micro X-ray diffraction (microXRD) patterns from cement–clay interfaces has been addressed. In order to extract the maximum information concerning both the spatial distribution and the crystal structure type associated with each of the many diffracting grains in heterogeneous, polycrystalline samples, an approach has been developed in which microXRD was applied to thin sections which were rotated in the X-ray beam. The data analysis, performed on microXRD patterns collected from a filled vein of a cement–clay interface from the natural analogue in Maqarin (Jordan), and a sample from a two-year-old altered interface between cement and argillaceous rock, demonstrate the potential of this method.

Rhythm is a central characteristic of music and speech, the most important domains of human communication using acoustic signals. Here, we investigated how rhythmical patterns in music are processed in the human brain, and, in addition, evaluated the impact of musical training on rhythm processing. Using fMRI, we found that deviations from a rule-based regular rhythmic structure activated the left planum temporale together with Broca's area and its right-hemispheric homolog across subjects, that is, a network also crucially involved in the processing of harmonic structure in music and the syntactic analysis of language. Comparing the BOLD responses to rhythmic variations between professional jazz drummers and musical laypersons, we found that only highly trained rhythmic experts show additional activity in left-hemispheric supramarginal gyrus, a higher-order region involved in processing of linguistic syntax. This suggests an additional functional recruitment of brain areas usually dedicated to complex linguistic syntax processing for the analysis of rhythmical patterns only in professional jazz drummers, who are especially trained to use rhythmical cues for communication.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common multifactorial disease. Some genetic risk factors have been identified. RLS susceptibility also has been related to iron. We therefore asked whether known iron-related genes are candidates for association with RLS and, vice versa, whether known RLS-associated loci influence iron parameters in serum. RLS/control samples (n = 954/1814 in the discovery step, 735/736 in replication 1, and 736/735 in replication 2) were tested for association with SNPs located within 4 Mb intervals surrounding each gene from a list of 111 iron-related genes using a discovery threshold of P = 5 × 10(-4). Two population cohorts (KORA F3 and F4 with together n = 3447) were tested for association of six known RLS loci with iron, ferritin, transferrin, transferrin-saturation, and soluble transferrin receptor. Results were negative. None of the candidate SNPs at the iron-related gene loci was confirmed significantly. An intronic SNP, rs2576036, of KATNAL2 at 18q21.1 was significant in the first (P = 0.00085) but not in the second replication step (joint nominal P-value = 0.044). Especially, rs1800652 (C282Y) in the HFE gene did not associate with RLS. Moreover, SNPs at the known RLS loci did not significantly affect serum iron parameters in the KORA cohorts. In conclusion, the correlation between RLS and iron parameters in serum may be weaker than assumed. Moreover, in a general power analysis, we show that genetic effects are diluted if they are transmitted via an intermediate trait to an end-phenotype. Sample size formulas are provided for small effect sizes.

Growing evidence suggests environmental change to be most severe across the semi-arid subtropics, with past, present and projected drying of the Mediterranean Basin posing a key multidisciplinary challenge. Consideration of a single climatic factor, however, often fails to explain spatiotemporal growth dynamics of drought-prone ecosystems. Here, we present annually resolved and absolutely dated ring width measurements of 871 Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris) from 18 individual plot sites in the Central Spanish Pinar Grande forest reserve. Although comprising tree ages from 6 to 175 years, this network correlates surprisingly well with the inverse May–July diurnal temperature range (r = 0.84; p < 0.00011956–2011). Ring width extremes were triggered by pressure anomalies of the North Atlantic Oscillation, and the long-term growth decline coincided with Iberian-wide drying since the mid-1970s. Climate model simulations not only confirm this negative trend over the last decades but also project drought to continuously increase over the 21st century. Associated ecological effects and socio-economic consequences should be considered to improve adaptation strategies of agricultural and forest management, as well as biodiversity conservation and ecosystem service.

The perforation of the plasmalemma by pore-forming toxins causes an influx of Ca2+ and an efflux of cytoplasmic proteins. In order to ensure cellular survival, lesions have to be identified, plugged and removed from the membrane. The Ca2+-driven fusion of lysosomes with the plasma membrane leads to hydrolysis of sphingomyelin by acid sphingomyelinase and a formation of ceramide platforms in the outer leaflet of the lipid bilayer. We propose that the negative curvature, promoted by tighter packing of lipids in the outer layer, leads to an inward vesiculation of the damaged area for its endocytotic uptake and internal degradation. In contrast, the activation of neutral sphingomyelinase triggers the production of ceramide within the inner leaflet of the lipid bilayer, thereby promoting an outward curvature, which enables the cell to shed the membrane-containing toxin pore into the extracellular space. In this process, ceramide is supported by members of the annexin protein family which act as Ca2+ sensors and as membrane fusion agents.

Es gibt zunehmend Beispiele, die belegen, dass die Neuroökonomie als Kombination von ökonomischer Entscheidungstheorie und Neurowissenschaften einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Psychotherapie-Forschung leisten kann. Die Berührungspunkte der beiden Disziplinen sind vielfältig: • Neuroökonomie benutzt Verhaltensexperimente, die es erlauben, komplexes menschliches Verhalten zu untersuchen. Psychotherapie verändert komplexes menschliches Verhalten. Zur Verbesserung der Diagnostik und der Evaluation von Therapieergebnissen können einfache neuroökonomische Experimente einen wichtigen Beitrag leisten. Die experimentelle Messung von zeitlichen, sozialen und Unsicherheitspräferenzen ist besonders geeignet, psychische Störungen zu charakterisieren. • Neuroökonomie ist eine Wissenschaft der menschlichen Motivation. Das Verständnis von bewussten und unbewussten Motivationsfaktoren erlaubt es Psychotherapeutinnen, die Komplexität und Tiefe der Probleme ihrer Patientinnen zu erfassen. • Neuroökonomie ist eine Sozialwissenschaft. Beziehungsprobleme gehören zu den häufigsten Klagen von Patientinnen mit psychischen Störungen, soziale Stressoren sind wichtige Ursachen psychischer Störungen und die therapeutische Beziehung ist der wichtigste Wirkfaktor der Psychotherapie. Die neuroökonomische Erforschung des Sozialverhaltens kann deshalb die Psychotherapie auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen inspirieren. • Neuroökonomie ist eine Neurowissenschaft. Psychotherapie-Forschung beschäftigt sich zunehmend mit Neuroplastizität, insbesondere mit den Effekten von Psychotherapie auf die Funktion und die Struktur des Gehirns. Der neuroökonomische Forschungsansatz macht es möglich, komplexe neuronale Funktionsstörungen bei psychischen Krankheiten zu identifizieren und ihre Modifikation durch Psychotherapie sichtbar zu machen. • Neuroökonomie ist eine umfassende Wissenschaft des menschlichen Verhaltens. Moderne Psychotherapie hat den Anspruch, psychische Störungen auf dem Hintergrund eines bio-psycho-soziales Krankheitsmodells zu verstehen und zu behandeln. Die Neuroökonomie kann einen Beitrag leisten, psychotherapeutische Krankheitsmodelle wissenschaftlich zu fundieren. Die ökonomische Entscheidungstheorie ermöglicht es, die Wechselwirkungen und Synergien von psychotherapeutischer Arbeit, somatischen Behandlungen und sozialen Rahmenbedingungen abzuschätzen. Folgende Eigenschaften schränken die Anwendbarkeit von neuroökonomischen Ansätzen in der Psychotherapie-Forschung allerdings ein: • Das Präferenz-Konzept geht von einer stabilen Verhaltensprädisposition aus. Wechsel von Präferenzen und stark situationsabhängiges Verhalten kann nur beschränkt modelliert werden. • In den meisten neuroökonomischen Experimenten wird Geld als allgemein gültiger Anreiz verwendet. Diese Methodik erlaubt es nicht, reizspezifisches Verhalten zu untersuchen. • Die Neuroökonomie abstrahiert soziale Beziehungen, um sie wissenschaftlich fassbar zu machen. Gewisse Beziehungsaspekte wie beispielsweise die Rolle von Gestik und Mimik können mit dieser Methodik nicht untersucht werden. • Die klassische ökonomische Entscheidungstheorie ist besonders geeignet, „kalte“, überlegte Entscheidungen zu verstehen. Impulsives und zeitinkonsistentes Verhalten kann mit dieser Theorie nur ungenügend beschrieben werden. Neuroökonomie ist eine junge Wissenschaft mit grossem Entwicklungspotential. Führende theoretische und Experimentalökonomen sind daran, Theorie und Forschungsmethodik zu erweitern, um situations- und reizspezifische Faktoren besser zu berücksichtigen und das „heisse“ Ende des Spektrums von Entscheidungsfindungen besser zu verstehen.

Objective: Downbeat nystagmus (DBN) is the most frequent form of acquired persisting fixation nystagmus with different symptoms such as unsteadiness of gait, postural instability, and blurred vision with reduced visual acuity (VA) and oscillopsia. However, different symptomatic therapeutic principles are required, such as 3,4-diaminopyridine and 4-aminopyridine, that effectively suppress DBN. Chlorzoxazone (CHZ) is a nonselective activator of small conductance calcium-activated potassium (SK) channels that modifies the activity of cerebellar Purkinje cells. We evaluated the effects of this agent on DBN in an observational proof-of-concept pilot study. Methods: Ten patients received CHZ 500 mg 3 times a day for 1 or 2 weeks. Slow-phase velocity of DBN, VA, postural sway, and the drug's side effects were evaluated. Recordings were conducted at baseline, 90 minutes after first administration, and after 1 or 2 weeks. Results: Mean slow-phase velocity significantly decreased from a baseline of 2.74°/s ± 2.00 to 2.29°/s ± 2.12 (mean ± SD) 90 minutes after first administration and to 2.04°/s ± 2.24 (p < 0.001; post hoc both p = 0.024) after long-term treatment. VA significantly increased and postural sway in posturography showed a tendency to decrease on medication. Fifty percent of patients did not report any side effects. The most common reported side effect was abdominal discomfort and dizziness. Conclusions: The treatment with the SK-channel activator CHZ is a potentially new therapeutic agent for the symptomatic treatment of DBN. Classification of evidence: This study provides Class IV evidence that CHZ 500 mg 3 times a day may improve eye movements and visual fixation in patients with DBN.
