The Forgotten Archduke: The Funeral Monument for Ernest of Austria in Brussels

Archduke Ernest of Austria (1553–1595), second son of Emperor Maximilian II and younger brother of Emperor Rudolf II, was in his youth a possible candidate for the thrones of the Empire or the Spanish Kingdom. Instead, he became Governor-General of the Netherlands in 1593 and relocated to Brussels in 1594 where he was welcomed with lavish festivities as the bearer of hope and prosperity. Unfortunately, Ernest died only thirteen months later without having achieved any political success. His brother and successor Albert of Austria commissioned the funeral monument for Ernest in 1600 after it was settled that he would be buried in Brussels and not Vienna. Focusing on this monument, which draws stylistically from various dynasty-related models, it will be shown that Albert intended to use this monument – and thus his brother’s memoria – to make the Brussels Cathedral the primary location of Habsburg dynastic memory in the Low Countries.

The Early Spörer Minimum – A Period of Extraordinary Climate and Socio-economic Changes in Western and Central Europe

Throughout the last millennium, mankind was affected by prolonged deviations from the climate mean state. While periods like the Maunder Minimum in the 17th century have been assessed in greater detail, earlier cold periods such as the 15th century received much less attention due to the sparse information available. Based on new evidence from different sources ranging from proxy archives to model simulations, it is now possible to provide an end-to-end assessment about the climate state during an exceptionally cold period in the 15th century, the role of internal, unforced climate variability and external forcing in shaping these extreme climatic conditions, and the impacts on and responses of the medieval society in Central Europe. Climate reconstructions from a multitude of natural and human archives indicate that, during winter, the period of the early Spörer Minimum (1431–1440 CE) was the coldest decade in Central Europe in the 15th century. The particularly cold winters and normal but wet summers resulted in a strong seasonal cycle that challenged food production and led to increasing food prices, a subsistence crisis, and a famine in parts of Europe. As a consequence, authorities implemented adaptation measures, such as the installation of grain storage capacities, in order to be prepared for future events. The 15th century is characterised by a grand solar minimum and enhanced volcanic activity, which both imply a reduction of seasonality. Climate model simulations show that periods with cold winters and strong seasonality are associated with internal climate variability rather than external forcing. Accordingly, it is hypothesised that the reconstructed extreme climatic conditions during this decade occurred by chance and in relation to the partly chaotic, internal variability within the climate system.

APS-Inserateanalyse der eidgenössischen Abstimmungen vom 9. Februar 2014

Die vorliegende APS-Inserateanalyse beschäftigt sich mit den eidgenössischen Abstimmungen vom 9. Februar 2014. Im ersten Kapitel werden die drei Vorlagen (FABI, Volksinitiative zur Abtreibungsfinanzierung und Masseneinwanderungsinitiative) hinsichtlich allgemeiner Kriterien miteinander verglichen. Dabei werden zunächst mit der Intensität und der Ausrichtung der verschiedenen Inseratekampagnen die zwei Hauptindikatoren präsentiert. An-schliessend erfolgt die Analyse der Platzierung der Anzeigen nach Pressegattungen sowie zeitlichen und geografischen Aspekten. In den Kapiteln 2-4 stehen vorlagenspezifische Eigenschaften im Vordergrund. In einem ersten Schritt werden für jede Vorlage die meist verwendeten Inseratetypen vorgestellt. Danach wird auf den Inhalt sowie auf die AbsenderInnen der Hauptbotschaften eingegangen. Falls es die Anzahl der verfügbaren Inserate erlaubt, werden drittens die Determinanten der zentralen Botschaften mit Hilfe von statistischen Verfahren unter die Lupe genommen. Für die Masseneinwanderungsinitiative (Kapitel 4) wurde eine ausführliche Spezialanalyse durchgeführt, mit der die Kampagnen der beiden Lager nach spezifischer Mobilisierung untersucht werden. Report of the Second European Zebrafish Principal Investigator Meeting in Karlsruhe, Germany, March 21-24, 2012.

The second European Zebrafish Principal Investigator (PI) Meeting was held in March, 2012, in Karlsruhe, Germany. It brought together PIs from all over Europe who work with fish models such as zebrafish and medaka to discuss their latest results, as well as to resolve strategic issues faced by this research community. Scientific discussion ranged from the development of new technologies for working with fish models to progress in various fields of research such as injury and repair, disease models, and cell polarity and dynamics. This meeting also marked the establishment of the European Zebrafish Resource Centre (EZRC) at Karlsruhe that in the future will serve as an important focus and community resource for zebrafish- and medaka-based research.

Variability of mesospheric water vapor above Bern in relation to the 27-day solar rotation cycle

Many studies investigated solar–terrestrial responses (thermal state, O₃ , OH, H₂O) with emphasis on the tropical upper atmosphere. In this paper the Focus is switched to water vapor in the mesosphere at a mid-latitudinal location. Eight years of water vapor profile measurements above Bern (46.88°N/7.46°E) are investigated to study oscillations with the Focus on periods between 10 and 50 days. Different spectral analyses revealed prominent features in the 27-day oscillation band, which are enhanced in the upper mesosphere (above 0.1 hPa, ∼64 km) during the rising sun spot activity of solar cycle 24. Local as well as zonal mean Aura MLS observations Support these results by showing a similar behavior. The relationship between mesospheric water and the solar Lyman-α flux is studied by comparing thesi-milarity of their temporal oscillations. The H₂O oscillation is negatively correlated to solar Lyman-α oscillation with a correlation coefficient of up to −0.3 to −0.4, and the Phase lag is 6–10 days at 0.04 hPa. The confidence level of the correlation is ≥99%. This finding supports the assumption that the 27-day oscillation in Lyman-α causes a periodical photo dissociation loss in mesospheric water. Wavelet power spectra, cross-wavelet transform and wavelet coherence analysis (WTC)complete our study. More periods of high common wavelet power of H₂O and solar Lyman-α are present when amplitudes of the Lyman-α flux increase. Since this is not a measure of physical correlation a more detailed view on WTC is necessary, where significant (two sigma level)correlations occur intermittently in the 27 and 13-day band with variable Phase lock behavior. Large Lyman-α oscillations appeared after the solar super storm in July 2012 and the H₂O oscillations show a well pronounced anticorrelation. The competition between advective transport and photo dissociation loss of mesospheric water vapor may explain the sometimes variable Phase relationship of mesospheric H₂O and solar Lyman-α oscillations. Generally, the WTC analysis indicates that solar variability causes observable photochemical and dynamical processes in the mid-latitude mesosphere.

An international registry for primary ciliary dyskinesia.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder leading to chronic upper and lower airway disease. Fundamental data on epidemiology, clinical presentation, course and treatment strategies are lacking in PCD. We have established an international PCD registry to realise an unmet need for an international platform to systematically collect data on incidence, clinical presentation, treatment and disease course.The registry was launched in January 2014. We used internet technology to ensure easy online access using a web browser under www.pcdregistry.eu. Data from 201 patients have been collected so far. The database is comprised of a basic data form including demographic and diagnostic information, and visit forms designed to monitor the disease course.To establish a definite PCD diagnosis, we used strict diagnostic criteria, which required two to three diagnostic methods in addition to classical clinical symptoms. Preliminary analysis of lung function data demonstrated a mean annual decline of percentage predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s of 0.59% (95% CI 0.98-0.22).Here, we present the development of an international PCD registry as a new promising tool to advance the understanding of this rare disorder, to recruit candidates for research studies and ultimately to improve PCD care.

Der Schwedische Kampfjet Gripen wurde von der Stimmbevölkerung gegroundet. - Die Armeefinanzierung geriet erneut ins Fadenkreuz der Bundesversammlung. - Die Weiterentwicklung der Armee geriet kurzzeitig ins Stocken und wurde inhaltlich nicht voran gebracht. - Der Zivildienst wurde nicht als Konkurrenzorganisation zur Armee angesehen. - Zum Schutz vor Cyber-Risiken wurden neue Wege beschritten. - Das revidierte Bevölkerungs- und Zivilschutzgesetz wurde per 2015 in Kraft gesetzt.

Gesundheit, Sozialhilfe, Sport

Im Rahmen der Strategie "Gesundheit2020" wurden weitere Massnahmen verabschiedet. - Der Gegenvorschlag zur Initiative "Ja zur Hausarztmedizin" wurde deutlich angenommen. - Im Bereich e-Health wurde mit der Projektierung des elektronischen Patientendossiers ein weiterer Schritt vorgenommen. - Das Medizinalberufegesetz (MedBG) beschäftigte die eidgenössischen Räte. - Das Heilmittelgesetz (HMG) stellte sich als harter Brocken heraus und konnte noch nicht abschliessend behandelt werden. - Die Alkoholgesetzgebung nahm klare Formen an. - Für die Sozialhilfe beginnt sich ein neues Rahmengesetz abzuzeichnen. - Im Sportbereich bezog die Landesregierung deutliche Positionen und lancierte eine "Gesamtschau Sport Schweiz".

Kultur, Sprachen, Kirchen

Trotz gewichtiger Kritik von den bürgerlichen Parteien und der Wirtschaft beantragte der Bundesrat im Vergleich zur Vorperiode zusätzliche finanzielle Mittel für die Kulturbotschaft (2016-2020). - Das Parlament verabschiedete eine Totalrevision des Bundesgesetzes über den Schutz der Kulturgüter bei bewaffneten Konflikten (KGSG). - Das Kunstmuseum Bern schloss mit Deutschland und Bayern eine Vereinbarung zur Übernahme der Werke aus der Kunstsammlung von Cornelius Gurlitt ab. - Ein Bericht der Europäischen Rassismuskommission stellte der Schweiz betreffend Umgang mit Fahrenden kein gutes Zeugnis aus. - Eine bei den Schweizer Katholiken durchgeführte Umfrage zu Partnerschafts-, Ehe- und Familienpastoral deckte starke Differenzen zur katholischen Lehre auf. - Sowohl das Bündner als auch das Zürcher Stimmvolk sprachen sich deutlich gegen die Abschaffung der Kirchensteuer für juristische Personen aus.

Als "erfolgreich" bezeichnen wir aufgrund obligatorischem oder fakultativem Referendum zur Abstimmung gelangte Behördenvorlagen, die von der Stimmbevölkerung abgelehnt wurden, sowie angenommene Volksinitiativen und Volksvorschläge in Form eines konstruktiven Referendums
