Prolonged deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA) adversely affects outcome and quality of life in thoracic aortic surgery. Several techniques of antegrade cerebral perfusion are routinely used: bilateral selective antegrade cerebral protection (SACP) by introducing catheters in the innominate and left carotid artery, unilateral perfusion through the right axillary antegrade cerebral perfusion (RAACP) or a combination of right axillary perfusion with an additional catheter in the left carotid artery (RAACCP), resulting also in bilateral perfusion. The aim of the present study was to analyse the impact of the different approaches on the quality of life (QoL).

Despite its short existence, vascular surgery has already grown out of the scope of a mono-specialty. Meanwhile emerging interests of other competing specialties push into the field of vascular care. Continuous technological innovation drives the need for sub-specialisation to provide disease-centred expertise; however, treatment success equally depends on balanced patient-centred care. Vascular surgeons are amidst this controversy and are currently challenged by their own demand to offer all aspects of vascular care - as "the vascular specialist". This article discusses the natural driving forces towards sub-specialisation and appraises advantages and limitations with respect to the future of integrated vascular care.

Colon cancer patients are at risk for recurrence. Recurrent disease might be curable if detected early by surveillance. However, data on the quality of surveillance are scarce. The objective of this study is to analyze the quality of surveillance after curative surgery for colon cancer among a cohort of Swiss patients.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the detectability and dimensions of periapical lesions, the relationship of the mandibular canal to the roots of the respective teeth, and the dimension of the buccal bone by using limited cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in comparison to conventional periapical (PA) radiographs for evaluation of mandibular molars before apical surgery.
