Purpose: Artistic speech therapy is applied in anthroposophically extended medicine to treat several diseases. The aim is to understand the physiology by investigating the effect of inner and heard speech on brain hemodynamics and oxygenation and analyzing whether these changes were affected by changes in arterial carbon dioxide pressure. Methods: In 29 healthy adult volunteers changes in cerebral absolute oxyhemoglobin ([O2Hb]), deoxyhemoglobin ([HHb]), total hemoglobin ([tHb]) concentrations and tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) were measured by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). End-tidal CO2 (PETCO2) was assessed by capnography. Each subject performed six tasks: inner speech, heard speech from a person and heard speech from a record with each two different recitation texts: hexameter and alliteration according to a randomized crossover design. Results: Significant changes during tasks: A decrease in StO2, [O2Hb], [tHb] and PETCO2 (only for inner speech); an increase in [HHb]. There was a significant difference between hexameter and alliteration. Particularly, changes in [tHb] at the left prefrontal cortex during tasks and after them were statistically different. Furthermore we found significant relations between changes in [O2Hb], [HHb], [tHb] or StO2 and the participants’ age, the baseline PETCO2, or certain speech tasks. Conclusion: During the inner speech, hyperventilation led to a lower PETCO2 (hypocapnia). During heard speech no significant changes in PETCO2 occurred. But decreases in StO2, [O2Hb], [tHb] suggest hypocapnia also here. Hexameter and alliteration led to different changes in [tHb]. Consequently, our parameters are affected by an interplay of both PETCO2 response and task dependent functional brain activity.

Purpose. This retrospective cohort study evaluated factors for peri-implant bone level changes (ΔIBL) associated with an implant type with inner-cone implant-abutment connection, rough neck surface, and platform switching (AT). Materials and Methods. All AT placed at the Department of Prosthodontics of the University of Bern between January 2004 and December 2005 were included in this study. All implants were examined by single radiographs using the parallel technique taken at surgery (T0) and obtained at least 6 months after surgery (T1). Possible influencing factors were analysed first using t-test (normal distribution) or the nonparametric Wilcoxon test (not normal distribution), and then a mixed model q variance analysis was performed. Results. 43 patients were treated with 109 implants. Five implants in 2 patients failed (survival rate: 95.4%).Mean ΔIBL in group 1 (T1: 6–12 months after surgery) was −0.65 ± 0.82mm and −0.69 ± 0.82mm in group 2 (T1: >12 months after surgery) (

The near nucleus coma of Comet 9P/Tempel 1 has been simulated with the 3D Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) code PDSC++ (Su, C.-C. [2013]. Parallel Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) Methods for Modeling Rarefied Gas Dynamics. PhD Thesis, National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan) and the derived column densities have been compared to observations of the water vapour distribution found by using infrared imaging spectrometer on the Deep Impact spacecraft (Feaga, L.M., A’Hearn, M.F., Sunshine, J.M., Groussin, O., Farnham, T.L. [2007]. Icarus 191(2), 134–145. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.icarus.2007.04.038). Modelled total production rates are also compared to various observations made at the time of the Deep Impact encounter. Three different models were tested. For all models, the shape model constructed from the Deep Impact observations by Thomas et al. (Thomas, P.C., Veverka, J., Belton, M.J.S., Hidy, A., A’Hearn, M.F., Farnham, T.L., et al. [2007]. Icarus, 187(1), 4–15. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.icarus.2006.12.013) was used. Outgassing depending only on the cosine of the solar insolation angle on each shape model facet is shown to provide an unsatisfactory model. Models constructed on the basis of active areas suggested by Kossacki and Szutowicz (Kossacki, K., Szutowicz, S. [2008]. Icarus, 195(2), 705–724. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.icarus.2007.12.014) are shown to be superior. The Kossacki and Szutowicz model, however, also shows deficits which we have sought to improve upon. For the best model we investigate the properties of the outflow.

Large numbers of microorganisms colonise the skin and mucous membranes of animals, with their highest density in the lower gastrointestinal tract. The impact of these microbes on the host can be demonstrated by comparing animals (usually mice) housed under germ-free conditions, or colonised with different compositions of microbes. Inbreeding and embryo manipulation programs have generated a wide variety of mouse strains with a fixed germ-line (isogenic) and hygiene comparisons robustly show remarkably strong interactions between the microbiota and the host, which can be summarised in three axioms. (I) Live microbes are largely confined to their spaces at body surfaces, provided the animal is not suffering from an infection. (II) There is promiscuous molecular exchange throughout the host and its microbiota in both directions [1]. (III) Every host organ system is profoundly shaped by the presence of body surface microbes. It follows that one must draw a line between live microbial and host “spaces” (I) to understand the crosstalk (II and III) at this interesting interface of the host-microbial superorganism. Of course, since microbes can adapt to very different niches, there has to be more than one line. In this issue of EMBO Reports, Johansson and colleagues have studied mucus, which is the main physical frontier for most microbes in the intestinal tract: they report how different non-pathogenic microbiota compositions affect its permeability and the functional protection of the epithelial surface [2].

The study focuses on gender norms and practices in Chinese Christian communities established by Jesuit missionary activity during the long seventeenth century. It analyzes how European and Chinese gender norms and practices affected each other in the context of the Sino-Western cultural contact initiated by the missionaries. The thesis consists of two parts. First, it analyzes the ways in which European Jesuits engaged with Chinese gender relations in the course of their mission in China. The study demonstrates that the Jesuits’ adoption of the Chinese scholar-gentry’s habitus entailed a partial adaptation to Confucian gender norms. The latter placed great emphasis on gender segregation and therefore discouraged direct communication between missionaries and Chinese women. This resulted in the emergence of organizational and devotional arrangements of Christian communities specific to China. Second, the study discusses Chinese Christian women's religious culture that emerged in the absence of a strong missionary presence among female devotees. It points out that Chinese Christian women created their own ritual culture and religious sociability in the domestic context, and that they actively took part in shaping Chinese Christianity as masters of domestic rituals.

Mitochondrial protein import is an essential function of the unique mitochondrion in T. brucei as roughly 1000 different nuclear encoded proteins need to be correctly localized to their mitochondrial subcompartment. For this reason the responsible import machinery is expected to be similarly complex as in other Eukaryotes. This was recently demonstrated for the translocation machinery in the outer mitochondrial membrane. In contrast, the composition of the inner membrane import machinery and the exact molecular pathway(s) taken by various substrates are still ill-defined. To elucidate this further, we performed a pulldown analysis of epitope tagged TbTim17 in combination with quantitative mass spectrometry. By this we identified novel components of the mitochondrial import machinery in trypanosomes. One of these, TimX, is an essential mitochondrial membrane protein of 42 kDa that is unique to kinetoplastids. This protein migrates on Blue Native PAGE in a high molecular weight complex similar to TbTim17. Ablation of either of the two proteins leads to a destabilization of the complex containing the other protein. Furthermore, its involvement in protein import could be demonstrated by in vivo and in vitro protein import assays. This corroborates that TimX together with TbTim17 forms a protein import complex in the inner mitochondrial membrane. As TbTim17 the TimX protein was subjected to pulldown analysis in combination with quantitative mass spectrometry. The overlap of candidates defined by these two sets of IPs likely defines further components of the inner membrane translocase which are presently being analyzed. In summary our study on novel components of the trypanosome mitochondrial protein import system gives us fascinating new insights into evolution of the mitochondrion.
