Unter dem Titel „Was Sie schon immer über Gott wissen wollten, aber nie zu fragen wagten“ bieten wir einen Kurs für Erwachsene an, die sich auch in Fragen des Glaubens das kritische Denken nicht verbieten lassen wollen. An vier Abenden werden wir uns mit Gott, seinem Wesen und seinen Eigenschaften auseinandersetzen. Pfannenfertige Antworten können wir Ihnen keine versprechen; wohl aber Denkanstösse von hellen Köpfen, die im Laufe von zweitausend Jahren theologischer Tradition mit diesen Fragen gerungen und wichtige Einsichten erlangt haben.

Nach fast zwanzigjähriger Tätigkeit als Professor am Alt-Katholischen Seminar der Universität Bonn ist Prof. Günter Esser Anfang Oktober 2015 in den Ruhestand getreten. Als Zeichen des Dankes ist diese Festschrift erschienen, zu der Kollegen, Freunde und Wegbegleiter beigetragen haben.

Judaism and Emotion - Texts, Performance, Experience

Judaism and Emotion breaks with stereotypes that, until recently, branded Judaism as a rigid religion of laws and prohibitions. Instead, authors from different fields of research discuss the subject of Judaism and emotion from various scholarly perspectives; they present an understanding of Judaism that does not exclude spirituality and emotions from Jewish thought. In doing so, the contributions account for the relation between the representation of emotion and the actual emotions that living and breathing human beings feel in their everyday lives. While scholars of rabbinic studies and theology take a historical-critical and socio-historical approach to the subject, musicologists and scholars of religious studies focus on the overall research question of how the literary representations of emotion in Judaism are related to ritual and musical performances within Jewish worship. They describe in a more holistic fashion how Judaism serves to integrate various aspects of social life. In doing so, they examine the dynamic interrelationship between Judaism, cognition, and culture.

Imagery of Early Christian Rituals in the Greek Physiologus

The paper focuses on the imagery of early Christian rituals (esp. of the eucharist and baptism) as they are found in allegorical interpretations of beasts in the Greek Physiologus and trace the way of selected motifs from the New Testament to this first Christian interpretation of nature in context of early Christian literature and theology. A special attention is given to the pelican, which is one of the most famous symbols of the eucharist, and to impressive baptismal imageries in the chapter on the eagle, on the snake and in some other chapters. The aim of the analysis is to explore the theological roots of the ritual imagery of Physiologus and to show that this work of early Egyptian Christianity is anything but 'unsakramental' as argued by E. Peterson (1959).
