This work presents a new, field-deployable technique for continuous, high-resolution measurements of methane mixing ratios from ice cores. The technique is based on a continuous flow analysis system, where ice core samples cut along the long axis of an ice core are melted continuously. The past atmospheric air contained in the ice is separated from the melt water stream via a system for continuous gas extraction. The extracted gas is dehumidified and then analyzed by a Wavelength Scanned-Cavity Ring Down Spectrometer for methane mixing ratios. We assess the performance of the new measurement technique in terms of precision (±0.8 ppbv, 1σ), accuracy (±8 ppbv), temporal (ca. 100 s), and spatial resolution (ca. 5 cm). Using a firn air transport model, we compare the resolution of the measurement technique to the resolution of the atmospheric methane signal as preserved in ice cores in Greenland. We conclude that our measurement technique can resolve all climatically relevant variations as preserved in the ice down to an ice depth of at least 1980 m (66 000 yr before present) in the North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling ice core. Furthermore, we describe the modifications, which are necessary to make a commercially available spectrometer suitable for continuous methane mixing ratio measurements from ice cores.

OBJECTIVE: Autopsy determination of fatal hemorrhage as the cause of death is often a difficult diagnosis in forensic medicine. No quantitative system for accurately measuring the blood volume in a corpse has been developed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This article describes the measurement and evaluation of the cross-sectional areas of major blood vessels, of the diameter of the right pulmonary artery, of the volumes of thoracic aorta and spleen on MDCT, and of the volumes of heart chambers on MRI in 65 autopsy-verified cases of fatal hemorrhage or no fatal hemorrhage. RESULTS: Most cases with a cause of death of "fatal hemorrhage" had collapsed vessels. The finding of a collapsed superior vena cava, main pulmonary artery, or right pulmonary artery was 100% specific for fatal hemorrhage. The mean volumes of the thoracic aorta and of each of the heart chambers and the mean cross-sectional areas of all vessels except the inferior vena cava and abdominal aorta were significantly smaller in fatal hemorrhage than in no fatal hemorrhage. CONCLUSION: For the quantitative differentiation of fatal hemorrhage from other causes of death, we propose a three-step algorithm with measurements of the diameter of the right pulmonary artery, the cross-sectional area of the main pulmonary artery, and the volume of the right atrium (specificity, 100%; sensitivity, 95%). However, this algorithm must be corroborated in a prospective study, which would eliminate the limitations of this study. Quantitative postmortem cross-sectional imaging might become a reliable objective method to assess the question of fatal hemorrhage in forensic medicine.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of magnetization transfer on multislice T(1) and T(2) measurements of articular cartilage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A set of phantoms with different concentrations of collagen and contrast agent (Gd-DTPA(2-)) were used for the in vitro study. A total of 20 healthy knees were used for the in vivo study. T(1) and T(2) measurements were performed using fast-spin-echo inversion-recovery (FSE-IR) sequence and multi-spin-echo (MSE) sequence, respectively, in both in vitro and in vivo studies. We investigated the difference in T(1) and T(2) values between that measured by single-slice acquisition and that measured by multislice acquisition. RESULTS: Regarding T(1) measurement, a large drop of T(1) in all slices and also a large interslice variation in T(1) were observed when multislice acquisition was used. Regarding T(2) measurement, a substantial drop of T(2) in all slices was observed; however, there was no apparent interslice variation when multislice acquisition was used. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that the adaptation of multislice acquisition technique for T(1) measurement using FSE-IR methodology is difficult and its use for clinical evaluation is problematic. In contrast, multislice acquisition for T(2) measurement using MSE was clinically applicable if inaccuracies caused by multislice acquisition were taken into account. J. Magn. Reson. Learned irrelevance (LIrr) refers to the retardation of classical conditioning following preexposure of the to-be-associated stimuli. Healthy volunteers have been tested on three occasions with a new LIrr paradigm avoiding methodological problems which afflict traditional paradigms. A significant LIrr effect was demonstrated on each occasion. Thus, the new paradigm enables repeated measurements of LIrr and might be useful in evaluating long-term effects of medication in psychiatric disorders exhibiting aberrant LIrr.

BACKGROUND: Pericard 6 (P6) is one of the most frequently used acupuncture points, especially in preventing nausea and vomiting. At this point, the median nerve is located very superficially. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the distance between the needle tip and the median nerve during acupuncture at P6, we conducted a prospective observational ultrasound (US) imaging study. We tested the hypothesis that de qi (a sensation that is typical of acupuncture needling) is evoked when the needle comes into contact with the epineural tissue and thereby prevents nerve penetration. SETTINGS/LOCATION: The outpatient pain clinic of the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. SUBJECTS: Fifty (50) patients receiving acupuncture treatment including P6 bilaterally. INTERVENTIONS: Patients were examined at both forearms using US (a 10-MHz linear transducer) after insertion of the needle at P6. OUTCOME MEASURES: The distance between the needle tip and the median nerve, the number of nerve contacts and nerve penetrations, as well as the number of successfully elicited de qi sensations were recorded. RESULTS: Complete data could be obtained from 97 cases. The mean distance from the needle tip to the nerve was 1.8 mm (standard deviation 2.2; range 0-11.3). Nerve contacts were recorded in 52 cases, in 14 of which the nerve was penetrated by the needle. De qi was elicited in 85 cases. We found no association between the number of nerve contacts and de qi. The 1-week follow-up showed no complications or neurologic problems. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first investigation demonstrating the relationship between acupuncture needle placement and adjacent neural structures using US technology. The rate of median nerve penetrations by the acupuncture needle at P6 was surprisingly high, but these seemed to carry no risk of neurologic sequelae. De qi at P6 does not depend on median nerve contact, nor does it prevent median nerve penetration.

OBJECTIVE: Resonance frequency analysis (RFA) is a method of measuring implant stability. However, little is known about RFA of implants with long loading periods. The objective of the present study was to determine standard implant stability quotients (ISQs) for clinical successfully osseointegrated 1-stage implants in the edentulous mandible. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Stability measurements by means of RFA were performed in regularly followed patients who had received 1- stage implants for overdenture support. The time interval between implant placement and measurement ranged from 1 year up to 10 years. The short-term group comprised patients who were followed up to 5 years, while the long-term group included patients with an observation time of > 5 years up to 10 years. For further comparison RFA measurements were performed in a matching group with unloaded implants at the end of the surgical procedure. For statistical analysis various parameters that might influence the ISQs of loaded implants were included, and a mixed-effects model applied (regression analysis, P <.0125). RESULTS: Ninety-four patients were available with a total of 205 loaded implants, and 16 patients with 36 implants immediately after the surgical procedure. The mean ISQ of all measured implants was 64.5 +/- 7.9 (range, 58 to 72). Statistical analysis did not reveal significant differences in the mean ISQ related to the observation time. The parameters with overall statistical significance were the diameter of the implants and changes in the attachment level. In the short-term group, the gender and the clinically measured attachment level had a significant effect. Implant diameter had a significant effect in the long-term group. CONCLUSIONS: A mean ISQ of 64.5 +/- 7.9 was found to be representative for stable asymptomatic interforaminal implants measured by the RFA instrument at any given time point. No significant differences in ISQ values were found between implants with different postsurgical time intervals. Implant diameter appears to influence the ISQ of interforaminal implants.
