The distinctive ecology of root herbivores, the complexity and diversity of root–microbe interactions, and the physical nature of the soil matrix mean that plant responses to root herbivory extrapolate poorly from our understanding of responses to aboveground herbivores. For example, root attack induces different changes in phytohormones to those in damaged leaves, including a lower but more potent burst of jasmonates in several plant species. Root secondary metabolite responses also differ markedly, although patterns between roots and shoots are harder to discern. Root defences must therefore be investigated in their own ecophysiological and evolutionary context, specifically one which incorporates root microbial symbionts and antagonists, if we are to better understand the battle between plants and their hidden herbivores.

The American Myth of Markets in Social Policy examines how implementing American tropes in policy design inadvertently frustrates policy goals. It investigates multiple market-oriented designs including funding for private organizations to deliver public services, funding for individuals to buy services, and policies incentivizing or mandating private actors to provide social policy. The author shows that these solutions often not only fail to achieve social goals, but, in fact, actively undermine them, for example saddling the poor with debt or encouraging discrimination. The book carefully details the mechanisms through which this occurs, for example a mismatch between program goals and either contract terms or individual preferences. The author examines several policies in depth, covering universal social insurance programs like healthcare and pensions, as well as smaller interventions like programs for the homeless. The author builds the argument using detailed empirical evidence as well as anecdote, keeping the book accessible and entertaining.

Plant survival during flooding relies on ethanolic fermentation for energy production. The available literature indicates that the first enzyme of the ethanolic fermentation pathway, pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC), is expressed at very low levels and is likely to be rate-limiting during oxygen deprivation. The authors expressed high levels of bacterial PDC in tobacco to study the modulation of PDC activity in vivo, and assess its impact on the physiology of ethanolic fermentation and survival under oxygen stress. In contrast to leaves, wild-type normoxic roots contained considerable PDC activity, and overexpression of the bacterial PDC caused only a moderate increase in acetaldehyde and ethanol production under anoxia compared to wild-type roots. No significant lactate production could be measured at any time, making it unlikely that lactate-induced acidification (LDH/PDC pH-stat) triggers the onset of ethanol synthesis. Instead, the authors favour a model in which the flux through the pathway is regulated by substrate availability. The increased ethanolic flux in the transgenics compared to the wild-type did not enhance anoxia tolerance. On the contrary, rapid utilisation of carbohydrate reserves enhanced premature cell death in the transgenics while replenishment of carbohydrates improved survival under anoxia.
