A critical phase in goal striving occurs when setbacks accumulate and goal disengagement becomes an issue. This critical phase is conceptualized as an action crisis and assumed to be characterized by an intrapsychic conflict in which the individual becomes torn between further goal pursuit and goal disengagement. Our theorizing converges with Klinger’s conceptualization of goal disengagement as a process, rather than a discrete event. Two longitudinal field studies tested and found support for the hypothesis that an action crisis not only compromises an individual’s psychological and physiological well-being, but also dampens the cognitive evaluation of the respective goal. In Study 3, marathon runners experiencing an action crisis in their goal of running marathons showed a stronger cortisol secretion and a lower performance in the race 2 weeks later. Results are interpreted in terms of action-phase–specific mindsets with a focus on self-regulatory processes in goal disengagement.

Population coding is widely regarded as a key mechanism for achieving reliable behavioral decisions. We previously introduced reinforcement learning for population-based decision making by spiking neurons. Here we generalize population reinforcement learning to spike-based plasticity rules that take account of the postsynaptic neural code. We consider spike/no-spike, spike count and spike latency codes. The multi-valued and continuous-valued features in the postsynaptic code allow for a generalization of binary decision making to multi-valued decision making and continuous-valued action selection. We show that code-specific learning rules speed up learning both for the discrete classification and the continuous regression tasks. The suggested learning rules also speed up with increasing population size as opposed to standard reinforcement learning rules. Continuous action selection is further shown to explain realistic learning speeds in the Morris water maze. Finally, we introduce the concept of action perturbation as opposed to the classical weight- or node-perturbation as an exploration mechanism underlying reinforcement learning. Exploration in the action space greatly increases the speed of learning as compared to exploration in the neuron or weight space.

Is the online trade with second-hand products changing individual consumer behaviour? What is the sustainability potential of this activity? How can daily energy-consuming routines at the workplace be changed? Do major changes in the course of people's lives represent opportunities to modify their consumer behaviour towards greater sustainability? These are only some of the research questions studied in the focal topic "From Knowledge to Action - New Paths towards Sustainable Consumption" which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the "Social-ecological Research Programme" (SÖF). This book gives an insight into the research results of the ten project groups. Their diversity highlights that there is much more to "sustainable consumption" than the simple purchase of organic or fair trade products.In addition, overarching conceptual and normative issues were treated across the project groups of the focal topic. Developed collaboratively and moderated by the accompanying research project, the results of the synthesis process are also presented here, as for example how the sustainability of individual consumer behaviour can be evaluated,or which theories of action are particularly useful for specific consumer behaviour phenomena.

Background: Health behavior change models identify effective self-regulatory skills for behavioral change, but the social context is usually neglected. This study investigated the effectiveness of a dyadic conceptualization of action control for promoting physical activity. Methods: 121 overweight individuals and their partners were randomly allocated to one of two experimental (dyadic vs. individual action control) and two control conditions. Participants completed questionnaires at baseline (T1) and four weeks later (T2) including measures of action control and 7-day recall physical activity. Findings: Results showed that action control signi+cantly increased from T1 to T2 and was overall higher in the experimental conditions compared to control conditions. In terms of physical activity, no overall intervention effect emerged. However, post hoc analyses revealed higher mean levels of sport activities in the dyadic intervention group compared to all other groups. Discussion: Overall, +ndings provide +rst support for the usefulness of a dyadic action control intervention, and suggest further investigation of objective measures of physical activity and secondary outcomes

BACKGROUND: Enhancing physical activity in overweight and obese individuals is an important means to promote health in this target population. The Health Action Process Approach (HAPA), which was the theoretical framework of this study, focuses on individual self-regulation variables for successful health behavior change. One key self-regulation variable of this model is action control with its three subfacets awareness of intentions, self-monitoring and regulatory effort. The social context of individuals, however, is usually neglected in common health behavior change theories. In order to integrate social influences into the HAPA, this randomized controlled trial investigated the effectiveness of a dyadic conceptualization of action control for promoting physical activity. METHODS/DESIGN: This protocol describes the design of a single-blind randomized controlled trial, which comprises four experimental groups: a dyadic action control group, an individual action control group and two control groups. Participants of this study are overweight or obese, heterosexual adult couples who intend to increase their physical activity. Blocking as means of a gender-balanced randomization is used to allocate couples to conditions and partners to either being the target person of the intervention or to the partner condition. The ecological momentary intervention takes place in the first 14 days after baseline assessment and is followed by another 14 days diary phase without intervention. Follow-ups are one month and six months later. Subsequent to the six-months follow-up another 14 days diary phase takes place.The main outcome measures are self-reported and accelerometer-assessed physical activity. Secondary outcome measures are Body Mass Index (BMI), aerobic fitness and habitual physical activity. DISCUSSION: This is the first study examining a dyadic action control intervention in comparison to an individual action control condition and two control groups applying a single-blind randomized control trial. Challenges with running couples studies as well as advantages and disadvantages of certain design-related decisions are discussed. A frequent suggestion to increase individuals' willingness to take action on climate change and to support relevant policies is to highlight its proximal consequences, that is, those that are close in space and time. But previous studies that have tested this proximizing approach have not revealed the expected positive effects on individual action and support for addressing climate change. We present three lines of psychological reasoning that provide compelling arguments as to why highlighting proximal impacts of climate change might not be as effective a way to increase individual mitigation and adaptation efforts as is often assumed. Our contextualization of the proximizing approach within established psychological research suggests that, depending on the particular theoretical perspective one takes on this issue, and on specific individual characteristics suggested by these perspectives, proximizing can bring about the intended positive effects, can have no (visible) effect or can even backfire. Thus, the effects of proximizing are much more complex than is commonly assumed. Revealing this complexity contributes to a refined theoretical understanding of the role that psychological distance plays in the context of climate change and opens up further avenues for future research and for interventions.

Cancer is one of the most severe and widespread diseases and an ideal treatment has not yet been found. In the last decades, cisplatinum was commonly applied in cancer therapy with very good results. However, serious side effects and resistant tumors necessitated the development of new antineoplastic agents, such as metallocenes dihalides. These are metal-based compounds exhibiting two cyclopentadienyl ligands and a cis-dihalide motif. They resemble the cis-chloro configuration of cisplatinum, which propounds a similar mode of action. Metallocenes comprising one of the transition metals titanium, molybdenum, vanadium, niobium, and zirconium as the metal center have been shown to be effective against several cancer cell lines. Evidence for the accumulation of metallocenes in the nucleus implied that DNA is one of the major targets. Although several studies reported adduct formation of metallocenes with nuclear DNA, as yet substantial information about the general binding pattern and the binding to higher-order structures is lacking. Mass spectrometry can fill this gap as it constitutes a powerful technique to investigate the formation of organometallic adducts. Presented data demonstrate that the two agents titanocene dichloride and molybdenocene dichloride bind to single-stranded DNA and RNA. Distinct fragment ions formed upon collision-induced dissociation help to unravel preferential binding sites within the oligonucleotides. Moreover, adducts with duplexes and quadruplexes shed light on the molecular mechanism of action.

Metallocene dichlorides constitute a remarkable class of antineoplastic agents that are highly effective against several cancer cell lines. They were shown to accumulate in the DNA-rich region, which suggests DNA as the primary target. These compounds exhibit two cyclopentadienyl ligands and two labile halide ligands, resulting in a bent sandwich structure. The cis-dihalide motif is structurally related to the cis-chloro configuration of cisplatin and similar modes of action can thus be assumed. Cisplatin binds to two neighboring guanine nucleobases in DNA and consequently, distorts the double-helix, thereby inhibiting DNA replication and transcription. Platinum is classified as a soft Lewis acid and binds preferentially to the nitrogen atoms within the nucleobases. The metallocene dichlorides investigated in this study comprise the metal centers Ti, V, Nb, Mo, Hf, and W, which are classified as hard or intermediate Lewis acids, and thus, favor binding to the phosphate oxygen. Although several studies reported adduct formation of metallocene dichlorides with nucleic acids, substantial information about the adduct composition, the binding pattern, and the nucleobase selectivity has not been provided yet. ESI-MS analyses gave evidence for the formation of metallocene adducts (M = Ti, V, Mo, and W) with single-stranded DNA homologues at pH 7. No adducts were formed with Nb and Hf at neutral pH, albeit adducts with Nb were observed at a low pH. MS2 data revealed considerable differences of the adduct compositions. The product ion spectra of DNA adducts with hard Lewis acids (Ti, V) gave evidence for the loss of metallocene ligands and only moderate backbone fragmentation was observed. By contrast, adducts with intermediate Lewis acids (Mo, W) retained the hydroxy ligands. Preliminary results are in good agreement with the Pearson concept and DFT calculations. Since the metallodrugs were not lost upon CID, the nucleobase selectivity, stoichiometry, and binding patterns can be elucidated by means of tandem mass spectrometry.
