An approach for the determination of atomization energies based on the extrapolated difference technique in the framework of Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry is proposed. Its essence is the use of thermodynamic data for the determination of the appearance energy of fragment ions of a reference and a special mathematical treatment of the ionization efficiency functions. The advantages of this approach are demonstrated for the cases of incongruently vaporizing lanthanide bromides that suffer from decomposition or disproportionation at high temperatures. The atomization energies for SmBr2 (7.78±0.12 eV), EuBr2 (7.51±0.11 eV), YbBr2 (7.25±0.13 eV), SmBr3 (11.09±0.10 eV), and YbBr3 (10.23±0.09 eV) molecules have been determined for the first time.

The theory on the intensities of 4f-4f transitions introduced by B.R. Judd and G.S. Ofelt in 1962 has become a center piece in rare-earth optical spectroscopy over the past five decades. Many fundamental studies have since explored the physical origins of the Judd–Ofelt theory and have proposed numerous extensions to the original model. A great number of studies have applied the Judd–Ofelt theory to a wide range of rare-earth doped materials, many of them with important applications in solid-state lasers, optical amplifiers, phosphors for displays and solid state lighting, upconversion and quantum-cutting materials, and fluorescent markers. This paper takes the view of the experimentalist who is interested in appreciating the basic concepts, implications, assumptions, and limitations of the Judd–Ofelt theory in order to properly apply it to practical problems. We first present the formalism for calculating the wavefunctions of 4f electronic states in a concise form and then show their application to the calculation and fitting of 4f-4f transition intensities. The potential, limitations and pitfalls of the theory are discussed, and a detailed case study of LaCl3:Er3+ is presented.

Self-absorption of the Eu2+ emission is an important aspect in SrI2:Eu that affects its scintillation performance. To calculate the probability of self-absorption, we measured the light yield and the decay time of 1–15 mm thick SrI2:2%Eu samples at temperatures between 78 K and 600 K. The obtained properties of SrI2:2%Eu crystals were then compared to those of SrI2:5%Eu. The decay times of SrI2:5%Eu crystals were the same or somewhat longer compared to those of twice as thickSrI2:2%Eu crystals. Accordingly, doubling the thickness has the same effect on the probability of self-absorption as doubling the Eu concentration.

This paper reports on the effects of Li+, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+ co-doping on the scintillation properties of LaBr3:5%Ce3+. Pulse-height spectra of various gamma and X-ray sources with energies from 8 keV to 1.33 MeV were measured from which the values of light yield and energy resolution were derived. Sr2+ and Ca2+ co-doped crystals showed excellent energy resolution as compared to standard LaBr3:Ce. The proportionality of the scintillation response to gamma and X-rays of Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+ co-doped samples also considerably improves. The effects of the co-dopants on emission spectra, decay time, and temperature stability of the light yield were studied. Multiple thermoluminescence glow peaks, decrease of the light yield at temperatures below 295 K, and additional long scintillation decay components were observed and related to charge carrier traps appearing in LaBr3:Ce3+ with Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+ co-doping.

Sr2+ co-doped LaBr3:5%Ce scintillators show a record low energy resolution of 2% at 662 keV and a considerably better proportional response compared to standard LaBr3:5%Ce. This paper reports on the optical properties and time response of Sr co-doped LaBr3:5%Ce. Multiple excitation and emission bands were observed in X-ray and optically excited luminescence measurements. Those bands are ascribed to three different Ce3+ sites. The first is the unperturbed site with the same luminescence properties as those of standard LaBr3:Ce. The other two are perturbed sites with red-shifted 4f-5d1 Ce3+ excitation and emission bands, longer Ce3+ decay times, and smaller Stokes shifts. The lowering of the lowest 5d level of Ce3+ was ascribed to larger crystal field interactions at the perturbed sites. Two types of point defects in the LaBr3 matrix were proposed to explain the observed results. No Ce4+ ions were detected in Sr co-doped LaBr3:5%Ce by diffuse reflectance measurements.

BACKGROUND The safety and efficacy of drug-eluting stents (DES) in the treatment of coronary artery disease have been assessed in several randomised trials. However, none of these trials were powered to assess the safety and efficacy of DES in women because only a small proportion of recruited participants were women. We therefore investigated the safety and efficacy of DES in female patients during long-term follow-up. METHODS We pooled patient-level data for female participants from 26 randomised trials of DES and analysed outcomes according to stent type (bare-metal stents, early-generation DES, and newer-generation DES). The primary safety endpoint was a composite of death or myocardial infarction. The secondary safety endpoint was definite or probable stent thrombosis. The primary efficacy endpoint was target-lesion revascularisation. Analysis was by intention to treat. FINDINGS Of 43,904 patients recruited in 26 trials of DES, 11,557 (26·3%) were women (mean age 67·1 years [SD 10·6]). 1108 (9·6%) women received bare-metal stents, 4171 (36·1%) early-generation DES, and 6278 (54·3%) newer-generation DES. At 3 years, estimated cumulative incidence of the composite of death or myocardial infarction occurred in 132 (12·8%) women in the bare-metal stent group, 421 (10·9%) in the early-generation DES group, and 496 (9·2%) in the newer-generation DES group (p=0·001). Definite or probable stent thrombosis occurred in 13 (1·3%), 79 (2·1%), and 66 (1·1%) women in the bare-metal stent, early-generation DES, and newer-generation DES groups, respectively (p=0·01). The use of DES was associated with a significant reduction in the 3 year rates of target-lesion revascularisation (197 [18·6%] women in the bare-metal stent group, 294 [7·8%] in the early-generation DES group, and 330 [6·3%] in the newer-generation DES group, p<0·0001). Results did not change after adjustment for baseline characteristics in the multivariable analysis. INTERPRETATION The use of DES in women is more effective and safe than is use of bare-metal stents during long-term follow-up. Newer-generation DES are associated with an improved safety profile compared with early-generation DES, and should therefore be thought of as the standard of care for percutaneous coronary revascularisation in women. The European Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires a status assessment of all water bodies. If that status is deteriorated, the WFD urges the identification of its potential causes in order to be able to suggest appropriate management measures. The instrument of investigative monitoring allows for such identification, provided that appropriate tools are available to link the observed effects to causative stressors, while unravelling confounding factors. In this chapter, the state of the art of status and causal pathway assessment is described for the major stressors responsible for the deterioration of European water bodies, i.e. toxicity, acidification, salinisation, eutrophication and oxygen depletion, parasites and pathogens, invasive alien species, hydromorphological degradation, changing water levels as well as sediments and suspended matter. For each stressor, an extensive description of the potential effects on the ecological status is given. Secondly, stressor-specific abiotic and biotic indicators are described that allow for a first indication of probable causes, based on the assessment of available monitoring data. Subsequently, more advanced tools for site-specific confirmation of stressors at hand are discussed. Finally, the local status assessments are put into the perspective of the risk for downstream stretches in order to be able to prioritise stressors and to be able to select appropriate measures for mitigation of the risks resulting from these stressors.

Vorlanite (CaU6+)O4 Fm3̄m, a = 5.3647(9) Å, V = 154.40(4) Å3, Z = 2 was found in larnite pyrometamorphic rocks of the Hatrurim formation at the Jabel Harmun locality, Judean Desert, Palestinian Autonomy. Vorlanite crystals from these larnite rocks are dark-gray with greenish hue in transmitted light. This color in transmitted light is in contrast to dark-red vorlanite Fm3̄m, a = 5.3813(2) Å, V = 155.834(10)Å3, Z = 2 from the type locality Upper Chegem caldera, Northern Caucasus. Heating above 750 °C of dark-gray vorlanite from the Jabel Harmun, as well as dark-red vorlanite from Caucasus, led to formation of yellow trigonal uranate CaUO4. The unusual color of vorlanite from Jabel Harmun is assumed to be related to small impurities of tetravalent uranium.

For Northern Hemisphere extra-tropical cyclone activity, the dependency of a potential anthropogenic climate change signal on the identification method applied is analysed. This study investigates the impact of the used algorithm on the changing signal, not the robustness of the climate change signal itself. Using one single transient AOGCM simulation as standard input for eleven state-of-the-art identification methods, the patterns of model simulated present day climatologies are found to be close to those computed from re-analysis, independent of the method applied. Although differences in the total number of cyclones identified exist, the climate change signals (IPCC SRES A1B) in the model run considered are largely similar between methods for all cyclones. Taking into account all tracks, decreasing numbers are found in the Mediterranean, the Arctic in the Barents and Greenland Seas, the mid-latitude Pacific and North America. Changing patterns are even more similar, if only the most severe systems are considered: the methods reveal a coherent statistically significant increase in frequency over the eastern North Atlantic and North Pacific. We found that the differences between the methods considered are largely due to the different role of weaker systems in the specific methods.

The scintillation and luminescence properties of pure CsBa2I5 and CsBa2I5 doped with 0.5% Eu and 5% Eu were studied between 78 K and 600 K. Single crystals were grown by the vertical Bridgman method from the melt. CsBa2I5:5% Eu showed a light yield of 80,000 photons/MeV, an energy resolution of 2.3% for the 662 key full absorption peak, and an excellent proportional response. Two broad emission bands centered at 400 nm and 600 nm were observed in the radioluminescence spectrum of pure CsBa2I5. The Eu2+ 5d-4f emission band was observed at 430 nm. The radiative lifetime of the Eu2+ excited state was determined as 350 ns. With increasing temperature and Eu concentration the Eu2+ emission shifts to longer wavelengths and its decay time lengthens as a result of self-absorption of the Eu2+ emission. Multiple thermoluminescence glow peaks and a sharp decrease of the light yield at temperatures below 200 K were observed and related to the presence of the charge carrier traps in CsBa2I5:Eu.

The gas phase equilibria Ba + LnX = BaX + Ln (Ln = Sm, Eu, Yb; X = Cl, Br, I) were investigated by Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry using a low energy of ionizing electrons to avoid fragmentation processes. The BaX molecules were used as references with well-established bond energies. The atomization enthalpies ΔatH0° of the LnX molecules were determined to be 427 ± 9 (SmCl), 409 ± 9 (EuCl), 366 ± 9 (YbCl), 360 ± 10 (SmBr), 356 ± 13 (EuBr), 316 ± 9 (YbBr), 317 ± 10 (SmI), 293 ± 10 (EuI), and 283 ± 10 (YbI) kJ·mol−1.
