The aim of this paper was to evaluate the efficacy of a novel 4-F compatible self-expanding Nitinol stent for the treatment of long femoro-popliteal obstructions.

Objective: The Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scales (CAARS) assess symptoms specific to adults that are frequently used and have been translated into German. The current study tests the factor structure of the CAARS in a large sample of German adults with ADHD and compares the means of the CAARS subscales with those of healthy German controls. Method: CAARS were completed by 466 participants with ADHD and 851 healthy control participants. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to establish model fit with the American original. Comparisons between participants with ADHD and healthy controls and influences of gender, age, and degree of education were analyzed. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis showed a very good fit with the model for the American original. Differences between ADHD participants and healthy controls on all Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scales-Self-Report (CAARS-S) subscales were substantial and significant. Conclusion: The factor structure of the original American model was successfully replicated in this sample of adult German ADHD participants. (J. of Att. Dis. 2012; XX(X) 1-XX).

The associations between life events in the 12 months preceding an episode of self-poisoning resulting in hospital attendance (the index episode), and the suicide intent of this episode were compared in individuals for whom the index episode was their first, episode and in individuals in whom it was a recurrence of DSH. Results indicated a significant interaction between independent life events, repetition status, and gender in the prediction of suicide intent, the association between life events and intent being moderated by repetition status in women only. The results provide preliminary evidence to suggest the presence of a suicidal process in women, in which the impact of negative life events on suicide intent diminishes across episodes.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the feasibility and psychometric properties of a self-administered version of the 24-item Geriatric Pain Measure (GPM-24-SA). DESIGN: Secondary analysis of baseline data from the Prevention in Older People-Assessment in Generalists' practices trial, an international multi-center study of a health-risk appraisal system. PARTICIPANTS: One thousand seventy-two community dwelling nondisabled older adults self-reporting pain from London, UK; Hamburg, Germany; and Solothurn, Switzerland. OUTCOME MEASURES: GPM-24-SA as part of a multidimensional Health Risk Appraisal Questionnaire including self-reported demographic and health-related information. Epidemiological data on halitosis are rare. In this study we evaluated the prevalence of halitosis in the population of the city of Bern, Switzerland, using a standardized questionnaire and clinical examination. First of all, a standardized questionnaire was filled out by all 419 participants. In the clinical examination, 'objective' values for halitosis were gathered through two different organoleptic assessments and by the measurement of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC). Additionally, tongue coating and the modified periodontal screening index (PSI) were evaluated for each participant. The questionnaire revealed that 32% of all subjects sometimes or often experienced halitosis. The organoleptic evaluation (grade 0-5) identified 48 persons with grade 3 and higher. Measurement of VSC identified 117 subjects (28%) with readings of >or= 75 parts per billion (ppb). Tongue coating, modified PSI, and smoking were significantly associated with higher organoleptic scores, and tongue coating and smoking were associated with higher VSC values. For about one-third of the Bernese city population, halitosis seems to pose an oral health problem. Only a weak correlation between self-reported halitosis and either organoleptic or VSC measurements could be detected.

BACKGROUND: Different stents in infrainguinal arteries have recently been associated with stent fractures and unfavorable clinical outcome, although data is limited regarding fractures of the Xpert selfexpanding nitinol stent. Thus, purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate its incidence and clinical implications in lower limb arteries. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-three consecutive patients (53 limbs) with peripheral arterial disease underwent secondary Xpert stent implantation due to suboptimal primary balloon angioplasty (PTA). Median age was 76 years. Stent fractures were evaluated by plain X-ray at median follow-up of 16 months. Stent patency was assessed by duplex ultrasound and sustained clinical improvement was defined as improvement of the ABI of > or = 0.10 together with improvement of at least one Rutherford class above the baseline finding throughout follow-up. RESULTS: Median length of femoropopliteal and infrapopliteal lesion was 3.0 and 2.3 cm, respectively. Sixtyfive stents were implanted in 43 limbs with femoropopliteal and 10 stents in 10 limbs with infrapopliteal lesion, respectively. Stent fractures occurred in 3 of 43 limbs (7.0%) of patients with femoropopliteal lesion with stent-based fracture rate of 4.6%. All fractured stents showed multiple struts fractures and occurred in the distal and middle superficial femoral artery. No stent fracture was observed in infrapopliteal lesions. The fractured stents were not associated with any clinical deterioration. Sustained clinical improvement was 71.0% and 54.6% for femoropopliteal and infrapopliteal lesions, respectively. Stent patency assessed by duplex was 65.2 and 63.9% for femoropopliteal and infrapopliteal lesions, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Fractures of the Xpert stent were seldom and not associated with unfavorable clinical outcome at midterm follow-up.
