Vicariance is thought to have played a major role in the evolution of modern parrots. However, as the relationships especially of the African taxa remained mostly unresolved, it has been difficult to draw firm conclusions about the roles of dispersal and vicariance. Our analyses using the broadest taxon sampling of old world parrots ever based on 3219 bp of three nuclear genes revealed well-resolved and congruent phylogenetic hypotheses. Agapornis of Africa and Madagascar was found to be the sister group to Loriculus of Australasia and Indo-Malayasia and together they clustered with the Australasian Loriinae, Cyclopsittacini and Melopsittacus. Poicephalus and Psittacus from mainland Africa formed the sister group Of the Neotropical Arini and Coracopsis from Madagascar and adjacent islands may be the closest relative of Psittrichas from New Guinea. These biogeographic relationships are best explained by independent colonization of the African continent via trans-oceanic dispersal from Australasia and Antarctica in the Paleogene following what may have been vicariance events in the late Cretaceous and/or early Paleogene. Our data support a taxon pulse model for the diversification of parrots whereby trans-oceanic dispersal played a more important role than previously thought and was the prerequisite for range expansion into new continents. The Personal Health Assistant Project (PHA) is a pilot system implementation sponsored by the Kozani Region Governors’ Association (KRGA) and installed in one of the two major public hospitals of the city of Kozani. PHA is intended to demonstrate how a secure, networked, multipurpose electronic health and food benefits digital signage system can transform common TV sets inside patient homes or hospital rooms into health care media players and facilitate information sharing and improve administrative efficiency among private doctors, public health care providers, informal caregivers, and nutrition program private companies, while placing individual patients firmly in control of the information at hand. This case evaluation of the PHA demonstration is intended to provide critical information to other decision makers considering implementing PHA or related digital signage technology at other institutions and public hospitals around the globe.

This paper reports a measurement of the W+b-jets (W+b+X and W+b (b) over bar +X) production cross-section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. These results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb(-1), collected with the ATLAS detector. Cross-sections are presented as a function of jet multiplicity and of the transverse momentum of the leading b-jet for both the muon and electron decay modes of the W boson. The W+b-jets cross-section, corrected for all known detector effects, is quoted in a limited kinematic range. Combining the muon and electron channels, the fiducial cross-section for W+b-jets is measured to be 7.1 +/- 0.5 (stat) +/- 1.4 (syst) pb, consistent with the next-to-leading order QCD prediction, corrected for non-perturbative and double-parton interactions (DPI) contributions, of 4.70 +/- 0.09 (stat) (+0.60)(-0.49) (scale) +/- 0.06 (PDF) +/- 0.16 (non-pert) (+0.52)(-0.38) (DPI) pb.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the potential of doxycycline to reduce stromelysin and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) activity in dogs with osteoarthritis (OA) secondary to spontaneous cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture. STUDY DESIGN Prospective, clinical study. ANIMALS Eighty-one dogs with OA secondary to CCL rupture and 54 normal dogs. METHODS Dogs with OA secondary to CCL rupture were divided into 2 groups before surgery. The Doxy-CCl group received 3 to 4 mg/kg doxycycline orally every 24 hours for 7 to 10 days (n = 35). The CCL group received no treatment (n = 46). Synovial fluid, articular cartilage, synovial membrane, and CCL samples were collected during surgery (Doxy-CCL group and CCL group) or immediately after euthanasia from healthy dogs (control group). Synovial fluid samples were examined cytologically. Total nitric oxide (NOt) concentrations were measured in the supernatant of explant cultures of all tissue samples, and stromelysin activity was measured in the supernatant of explant cultures of cartilage. RESULTS NOt concentrations measured in cartilage were significantly lower in the Doxy-CCL group than in the CCL group, but were not different from those measured in the control group. Doxycycline treatment did not have a significant effect on cartilage stromelysin levels. CONCLUSION The findings in this study indicate that doxycycline inhibits NO production in cartilage in dogs with CCL rupture. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Doxycycline may have a role in the treatment of canine OA by inhibiting NO production.

We study lepton flavor observables in the Standard Model (SM) extended with all dimension-6 operators which are invariant under the SM gauge group. We calculate the complete one-loop predictions to the radiative lepton decays μ → eγ, τ → μγ and τ → eγ as well as to the closely related anomalous magnetic moments and electric dipole moments of charged leptons, taking into account all dimension-6 operators which can generate lepton flavor violation. Also the 3-body flavor violating charged lepton decays τ ± → μ ± μ + μ −, τ ± → e ± e + e −, τ ± → e ± μ + μ −, τ ± → μ ± e + e −, τ ± → e ∓ μ ± μ ±, τ ± → μ ∓ e ± e ± and μ ± → e ± e + e − and the Z 0 decays Z 0 → ℓ+iℓ−j are considered, taking into account all tree-level contributions.
