We propose a new mechanism for diversification of male nuptial–colour patterns in the rapidly speciating cichlid fishes of Lake Victoria. Sympatric closely related species often display nuptial colours at opposite ends of the spectrum with males either blue or yellow to red. Colour polymorphisms within single populations are common too. We propose that competition between males for breeding sites promotes such colour diversification, and thereby speciation. We hypothesize that male aggression is primarily directed towards males of the common colour, and that rare colour morphs enjoy a negatively frequency–dependent fitness advantage. We test our hypothesis with a large dataset on the distributions and nuptial colorations of 52 species on 47 habitat islands in Lake Victoria, and with a smaller dataset on the within–spawning–site distributions of males with different coloration. We report that territories of males of the same colour are negatively associated on the spawning site, and that the distribution of closely related species over habitat islands is determined by nuptial coloration in the fashion predicted by our hypothesis. Whereas among unrelated species those with similar nuptial colour are positively associated, among closely related species those with similar colour are negatively associated and those with different colour are positively associated. This implies that negatively frequency–dependent selection on nuptial coloration among closely related species is a sufficiently strong force to override other effects on species distributions. We suggest that male–male competition is an important and previously neglected agent of diversification among haplochromine cichlid fishes.

Previous studies of the sediments of Lake Lucerne have shown that massive subaqueous mass movements affecting unconsolidated sediments on lateral slopes are a common process in this lake, and, in view of historical reports describing damaging waves on the lake, it was suggested that tsunamis generated by mass movements represent a considerable natural hazard on the lakeshores. Newly performed numerical simulations combining two-dimensional, depth-averaged models for mass-movement propagation and for tsunami generation, propagation and inunda- tion reproduce a number of reported tsunami effects. Four analysed mass-movement scenarios—three based on documented slope failures involving volumes of 5.5 to 20.8 9 106 m3—show peak wave heights of several metres and maximum runup of 6 to [10 m in the directly affected basins, while effects in neighbouring basins are less drastic. The tsunamis cause large-scale inundation over distances of several hundred metres on flat alluvial plains close to the mass-movement source areas. Basins at the ends of the lake experience regular water-level oscillations with characteristic periods of several minutes. The vulnerability of potentially affected areas has increased dramatically since the times of the damaging historical events, recommending a thorough evaluation of the hazard.

The regulation of microtubule dynamics is attributed to microtubule-associated proteins that bind to the microtubule outer surface, but little is known about cellular components that may associate with the internal side of microtubules. We used cryoelectron tomography to investigate in a quantitative manner the three dimensional structure of microtubules in intact mammalian cells. We show that the lumen of microtubules in this native state is filled with discrete, globular particles with a diameter of 7 nm and spacings between 8 and 20 nm in neuronal cells. Cross-sectional views of microtubules confirm the presence of luminal material in vitreous sections of brain tissue. Most of the luminal particles had connections to the microtubule wall, as revealed in tomograms. A higher accumulation of particles was seen near the retracting plus ends of microtubules. The luminal particles were abundant in neurons, but were also observed in other cells, such as astrocytes and stem cells.

Atrial septal defects (ASDs) are one of the most frequent congenital cardiac malformations, accounting for about 8-10% of all congenital heart defects. The prevalence of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in adults with an ASD is 8-10%. Different clinical PAH scenarios can be encountered. At one end of the spectrum are adults with no or only mild pulmonary vascular disease and a large shunt. These are patients who can safely undergo shunt closure. In the elderly, mild residual pulmonary hypertension after shunt closure is the rule. At the other end of the spectrum are adults with severe, irreversible pulmonary vascular disease, shunt reversal and chronic cyanosis, that is, Eisenmenger syndrome. These are patients who need to be managed medically. The challenge is to properly classify ASD patients with PAH falling in between the two ends of the spectrum as the ones with advanced, but reversible pulmonary vascular disease amenable to repair, versus the ones with progressive pulmonary vascular disease not responding to shunt closure. There are concerns that adults with progressive pulmonary vascular disease have worse outcomes after shunt closure than patients not undergoing shunt closure. Due to the correlation of pulmonary vascular changes and pulmonary hemodynamics, cardiac catheterization is used in the decision-making process. It is important to consider the hemodynamic data in the context of the clinical picture, the defect anatomy and further noninvasive tests when evaluating the option of shunt closure in these patients.

The mature 3' ends of histone mRNAs are formed by endonucleolytic cleavage of longer precursor transcripts. This process occurs in the nucleus and can be regarded as the equivalent of the polyadenylation reaction involved in 3′-end-generation of all other mRNAs. A sea urchin H3 gene that failed to be properly processed in the Xenopus oocyte system proved particularly useful, because it allowed the identification of a processing component from sea urchins by a complementation assay. Nuclear extracts prepared from cells under various growth conditions have helped to reveal proliferation-dependent changes in the efficiency of histone RNA 3′ processing. RNA substrates for in vitro processing are best prepared by runoff transcription of specific DNA templates with bacterial or phage RNA polymerases. For this purpose, a restriction fragment containing the 3′-terminal region of a histone gene and including the conserved palindrome and spacer motifs is cloned into a polylinker sequence downstream of a strong promoter.

The archaeological evidence from Late Bronze Age Nuzi has ever since the publication of R.F.S. Starr’s final report in 1939 experienced few attention, leaving the interpretation of the inner structure of this extraordinarily extensively excavated settlement to a thriving philological research. This paper presents a macroscopic spatial analysis of mobile inventories in the domestic areas. Based on the comparison with stationary installations and the formal architectural structure a revised socio-topography is proposed. The combination with the evidence from the investigations of the private archives elucidates the great potential for the consideration of multiple approaches in the future research on the function, meaning and sociology of spaces in Near Eastern Archaeology.

In this paper, we present a consolidation method that is based on a new representation of 3D point sets. The key idea is to augment each surface point into a deep point by associating it with an inner point that resides on the meso-skeleton, which consists of a mixture of skeletal curves and sheets. The deep points representation is a result of a joint optimization applied to both ends of the deep points. The optimization objective is to fairly distribute the end points across the surface and the meso-skeleton, such that the deep point orientations agree with the surface normals. The optimization converges where the inner points form a coherent meso-skeleton, and the surface points are consolidated with the missing regions completed. The strength of this new representation stems from the fact that it is comprised of both local and non-local geometric information. We demonstrate the advantages of the deep points consolidation technique by employing it to consolidate and complete noisy point-sampled geometry with large missing parts.
