The first case of spongiform encephalopathy in a zebu (Bos indicus) was identified in a zoo in Switzerland. Although histopathologic and immunohistochemical analyses of the central nervous system indicated a diagnosis of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), molecular typing showed some features different from those of BSE in cattle (B. taurus).

Microrough titanium (Ti) surfaces of dental implants have demonstrated more rapid and greater bone apposition when compared with machined Ti surfaces. However, further enhancement of osteoblastic activity and bone apposition by bio-functionalizing the implant surface with a monomolecular adsorbed layer of a co-polymer - i.e., poly(L-lysine)-graft-poly(ethylene glycol) (PLL-g-PEG) and its derivatives (PLL-g-PEG/PEG-peptide) - has never been investigated. The aim of the present study was to examine early bone apposition to a modified sandblasted and acid-etched (SLA) surface coated with an Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD)-peptide-modified polymer (PLL-g-PEG/PEG-RGD) in the maxillae of miniature pigs, and to compare it with the standard SLA surface. Test and control implants had the same microrough topography (SLA), but differed in their surface chemistry (polymer coatings). The following surfaces were examined histomorphometrically: (i) control - SLA without coating; (ii) (PLL-g-PEG); (iii) (PLL-g-PEG/PEG-RDG) (RDG, Arg-Asp-Gly); and (iv) (PLL-g-PEG/PEG-RGD). At 2 weeks, RGD-coated implants demonstrated significantly higher percentages of bone-to-implant contact as compared with controls (61.68% vs. 43.62%; P < 0.001). It can be concluded that the (PLL-g-PEG/PEG-RGD) coatings may promote enhanced bone apposition during the early stages of bone regeneration.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the most reliable insertion angle, corridor length and width to place a ventral transarticular atlantoaxial screw in miniature breed dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective CT imaging study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Cervical CT scans of toy breed dogs (n = 21). METHODS: Dogs were divided into 2 groups--group 1: no atlantoaxial abnormalities; group 2: atlantoaxial instability. Insertion angle in medial to lateral and ventral to dorsal direction was measured in group 1. Corridor length and width were measured in groups 1 and 2. Corridor width was measured at 3 points of the corridor. Each variable was measured 3 times and the mean used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Mean +/- SD optimal transarticular atlantoaxial insertion angle was determined to be 40 +/- 1 degrees in medial to lateral direction from the midline and 20 +/- 1 degrees in ventral to dorsal direction from the floor of the neural canal of C2. Mean corridor length was 7 mm (range, 4.5-8.0 mm). Significant correlation was found between corridor length, body weight, and age. Mean bone corridor width ranged from 3 to 5 mm. Statistically significant differences were found between individuals, gender and measured side. CONCLUSIONS: Optimal placement of a transarticular screw for atlantoaxial joint stabilization is very demanding because the screw path corridor is very narrow.

An experimental procedure for precise and accurate measurements of isotope abundances by a miniature laser ablation mass spectrometer for space research is described. The measurements were conducted on different untreated NIST standards and galena samples by applying pulsed UV laser radiation (266 nm, 3 ns and 20 Hz) for ablation, atomisation, and ionisation of the sample material. Mass spectra of released ions are measured by a reflectron-type time-of-flight mass analyser. A computer controlled performance optimiser was used to operate the system at maximum ion transmission and mass resolution. At optimal experimental conditions, the best relative accuracy and precision achieved for Pb isotope compositions are at the per mill level and were obtained in a range of applied laser irradiances and a defined number of accumulated spectra. A similar relative accuracy and precision was achieved in the study of Pb isotope compositions in terrestrial galena samples. The results for the galena samples are similar to those obtained with a thermal ionisation mass spectrometer (TIMS). The studies of the isotope composition of other elements yielded relative accuracy and precision at the per mill level too, with characteristic instrument parameters for each element. The relative accuracy and precision of the measurements is degrading with lower element/isotope concentration in a sample. For the elements with abundances below 100 ppm these values drop to the percent level. Depending on the isotopic abundances of Pb in minerals, 207Pb/206Pb ages with accuracy in the range of tens of millions of years can be achieved.

Replacement intervals of implantable medical devices are commonly dictated by battery life. Therefore, intracorporeal energy harvesting has the potential to reduce the number of surgical interventions by extending the life cycle of active devices. Given the accumulated experience with intravascular devices such as stents, heart valves, and cardiac assist devices, the idea to harvest a small fraction of the hydraulic energy available in the cardiovascular circulation is revisited. The aim of this article is to explore the technical feasibility of harvesting 1 mW electric power using a miniature hydrodynamic turbine powered by about 1% of the cardiac output flow in a peripheral artery. To this end, numerical modelling of the fluid mechanics and experimental verification of the overall performance of a 1:1 scale friction turbine are performed in vitro. The numerical flow model is validated for a range of turbine configurations and flow conditions (up to 250 mL/min) in terms of hydromechanic efficiency; up to 15% could be achieved with the nonoptimized configurations of the study. Although this article does not entail the clinical feasibility of intravascular turbines in terms of hemocompatibility and impact on the circulatory system, the numerical model does provide first estimates of the mechanical shear forces relevant to blood trauma and platelet activation. It is concluded that the time-integrated shear stress exposure is significantly lower than in cardiac assist devices due to lower flow velocities and predominantly laminar flow.

Key performance features of a miniature laser ablation time-of-flight mass spectrometer designed for in situ investigations of the chemical composition of planetary surfaces are presented. This mass spectrometer is well suited for elemental and isotopic analysis of raw solid materials with high sensitivity and high spatial resolution. In this study, ultraviolet laser radiation with irradiances suitable for ablation (< 1 GW/cm2) is used to achieve stable ion formation and low sample consumption. In comparison to our previous laser ablation studies at infrared wavelengths, several improvements to the experimental setup have been made, which allow accurate control over the experimental conditions and good reproducibility of measurements. Current performance evaluations indicate significant improvements to several instrumental figures of merit. Calibration of the mass scale is performed within a mass accuracy (Δm/m) in the range of 100 ppm, and a typical mass resolution (m/Δm) ~600 is achieved at the lead mass peaks. At lower laser irradiances, the mass resolution is better, about (m/Δm) ~900 for lead, and limited by the laser pulse duration of 3 ns. The effective dynamic range of the instrument was enhanced from about 6 decades determined in previous study up to more than 8 decades at present. Current studies show high sensitivity in detection of both metallic and non-metallic elements. Their abundance down to tens of ppb can be measured together with their isotopic patterns. Due to strict control of the experimental parameters, e.g. laser characteristics, ion-optical parameters and sample position, by computer control, measurements can be performed with high reproducibility. BACKGROUND: Zirconia (ZrO2 ) has received interest as a dental material; however, little information is available on the impact of surface modifications on the osseointegration of zirconia implants. PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of acid or alkaline etching of sandblasted ZrO2 implants on bone apposition in vivo. METHODS: Cylindrical ZrO2 implants with two circumferential grooves were placed in the maxilla of 12 miniature pigs. Biopsies were harvested after 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks of healing. Undecalcified toluidine blue-stained ground sections were produced. The bone-to-implant contact, the bone area, and the presence of multinucleated giant cells were determined by histomorphometry. An uncorrected explorative statistical analysis was performed. RESULTS: Acid etching but not alkaline etching of sandblasted ZrO2 implants caused more bone-to-implant contact than sandblasted ZrO2 implants. The bone area was unaffected by the surface modifications. Acid and alkaline etching both increased the formation of multinucleated giant cells at the implant surface. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a scientific basis to further investigate the impact of acid etching of sandblasted ZrO2 implants on osseointegration and the role of multinucleated giant cells in this process.
