Globalization has increased the pressure on organizations and companies to operate in the most efficient and economic way. This tendency promotes that companies concentrate more and more on their core businesses, outsource less profitable departments and services to reduce costs. By contrast to earlier times, companies are highly specialized and have a low real net output ratio. For being able to provide the consumers with the right products, those companies have to collaborate with other suppliers and form large supply chains. An effect of large supply chains is the deficiency of high stocks and stockholding costs. This fact has lead to the rapid spread of Just-in-Time logistic concepts aimed minimizing stock by simultaneous high availability of products. Those concurring goals, minimizing stock by simultaneous high product availability, claim for high availability of the production systems in the way that an incoming order can immediately processed. Besides of design aspects and the quality of the production system, maintenance has a strong impact on production system availability. In the last decades, there has been many attempts to create maintenance models for availability optimization. Most of them concentrated on the availability aspect only without incorporating further aspects as logistics and profitability of the overall system. However, production system operator’s main intention is to optimize the profitability of the production system and not the availability of the production system. Thus, classic models, limited to represent and optimize maintenance strategies under the light of availability, fail. A novel approach, incorporating all financial impacting processes of and around a production system, is needed. The proposed model is subdivided into three parts, maintenance module, production module and connection module. This subdivision provides easy maintainability and simple extendability. Within those modules, all aspect of production process are modeled. Main part of the work lies in the extended maintenance and failure module that offers a representation of different maintenance strategies but also incorporates the effect of over-maintaining and failed maintenance (maintenance induced failures). Order release and seizing of the production system are modeled in the production part. Due to computational power limitation, it was not possible to run the simulation and the optimization with the fully developed production model. Thus, the production model was reduced to a black-box without higher degree of details.

A microfluidic Organ-on-Chip has been developed for monitoring the epithelial cells monolayer. Equivalent circuit Model was used to determine the electrical properties from the impedance spectra of the epithelial cells monolayer. Black platinum on platinum electrodes was electrochemically deposited onto the surface of electrodes to reduce the influence of the electrical double layer on the impedance measurements. Measurements of impedance with an Impedance Analyzer were done to validate the equivalent circuit model and the decrease of the double layer effect. A Lock-in Amplifier was designed to measure the impedance.

L’azoto è uno dei prodotti principali dell’industria chimica, utilizzato principalmente per assicurare un sicuro stoccaggio di composti infiammabili. Generatori con sistemi PSA sono spesso più economici della tradizionale distillazione criogenica. I processi PSA utilizzano una colonna a letto fisso, riempita con materiale adsorbente, che adsorbe selettivamente un componente da una miscela gassosa. L’ossigeno diffonde molto più velocemente dell'azoto nei pori di setacci molecolari carboniosi. Oltre ad un ottimo materiale adsorbente, anche il design è fondamentale per la performance di un processo PSA. La fase di adsorbimento è seguita da una fase di desorbimento. Il materiale adsorbente può essere quindi riutilizzato nel ciclo seguente. L’assenza di un simulatore di processo ha reso necessario l’uso di dati sperimentali per sviluppare nuovi processi. Un tale approccio è molto costoso e lungo. Una modellazione e simulazione matematica, che consideri tutti i fenomeni di trasporto, è richiesta per una migliore comprensione dell'adsorbente sia per l'ottimizzazione del processo. La dinamica della colonna richiede la soluzione di insiemi di PDE distribuite nel tempo e nello spazio. Questo lavoro è stato svolto presso l'Università di Scienze Applicate - Münster, Germania. Argomento di questa tesi è la modellazione e simulazione di un impianto PSA per la produzione di azoto con il simulatore di processo Aspen Adsorption con l’obiettivo di permettere in futuro ottimizzazioni di processo affidabili, attendibili ed economiche basate su computazioni numeriche. E' discussa l’ottimizzazione di parametri, dati cinetici, termodinamici e di equilibrio. Il modello è affidabile, rigoroso e risponde adeguatamente a diverse condizioni al contorno. Tuttavia non è ancora pienamente soddisfacente poiché manca una rappresentazione adeguata della cinetica ovvero dei fenomeni di trasporto di materia. La messa a punto del software permetterà in futuro di indagare velocemente nuove possibilità di operazione.

The Gulf of Aqaba represents a small scale, easy to access, regional analogue of larger oceanic oligotrophic systems. In this Gulf, the seasonal cycles of stratification and mixing drives the seasonal phytoplankton dynamics. In summer and fall, when nutrient concentrations are very low, Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus are more abundant in the surface water. This two populations are exposed to phosphate limitation. During winter mixing, when nutrient concentrations are high, Chlorophyceae and Cryptophyceae are dominant but scarce or absent during summer. In this study it was tried to develop a simulation model based on historical data to predict the phytoplankton dynamics in the northern Gulf of Aqaba. The purpose is to understand what forces operate, and how, to determine the phytoplankton dynamics in this Gulf. To make the models data sampled in two different sampling station (Fish Farm Station and Station A) were used. The data of chemical, biological and physical factors, are available from 14th January 2007 to 28th December 2009. The Fish Farm Station point was near a Fish Farm that was operational until 17th June 2008, complete closure date of the Fish Farm, about halfway through the total sampling time. The Station A sampling point is about 13 Km away from the Fish Farm Station. To build the model, the MATLAB software was used (version 7.6.0.324 R2008a), in particular a tool named Simulink. The Fish Farm Station models shows that the Fish Farm activity has altered the nutrient concentrations and as a consequence the normal phytoplankton dynamics. Despite the distance between the two sampling stations, there might be an influence from the Fish Farm activities also in the Station A ecosystem. The models about this sampling station shows that the Fish Farm impact appears to be much lower than the impact in the Fish Farm Station, because the phytoplankton dynamics appears to be driven mainly by the seasonal mixing cycle.

Il lavoro è dedicato all'analisi fisica e alla modellizzazione dello strato limite atmosferico in condizioni stabili. L'obiettivo principale è quello di migliorare i modelli di parametrizzazione della turbulenza attualmente utilizzati dai modelli meteorologici a grande scala. Questi modelli di parametrizzazione della turbolenza consistono nell' esprimere gli stress di Reynolds come funzioni dei campi medi (componenti orizzontali della velocità e temperatura potenziale) usando delle chiusure. La maggior parte delle chiusure sono state sviluppate per i casi quasi-neutrali, e la difficoltà è trattare l'effetto della stabilità in modo rigoroso. Studieremo in dettaglio due differenti modelli di chiusura della turbolenza per lo strato limite stabile basati su assunzioni diverse: uno schema TKE-l (Mellor-Yamada,1982), che è usato nel modello di previsione BOLAM (Bologna Limited Area Model), e uno schema sviluppato recentemente da Mauritsen et al. (2007). Le assunzioni delle chiusure dei due schemi sono analizzate con dati sperimentali provenienti dalla torre di Cabauw in Olanda e dal sito CIBA in Spagna. Questi schemi di parametrizzazione della turbolenza sono quindi inseriti all'interno di un modello colonnare dello strato limite atmosferico, per testare le loro predizioni senza influenze esterne. Il confronto tra i differenti schemi è effettuato su un caso ben documentato in letteratura, il "GABLS1". Per confermare la validità delle predizioni, un dataset tridimensionale è creato simulando lo stesso caso GABLS1 con una Large Eddy Simulation. ARPS (Advanced Regional Prediction System) è stato usato per questo scopo. La stratificazione stabile vincola il passo di griglia, poichè la LES deve essere ad una risoluzione abbastanza elevata affinchè le tipiche scale verticali di moto siano correttamente risolte. Il confronto di questo dataset tridimensionale con le predizioni degli schemi turbolenti permettono di proporre un insieme di nuove chiusure atte a migliorare il modello di turbolenza di BOLAM. Systems Biology is an innovative way of doing biology recently raised in bio-informatics contexts, characterised by the study of biological systems as complex systems with a strong focus on the system level and on the interaction dimension. In other words, the objective is to understand biological systems as a whole, putting on the foreground not only the study of the individual parts as standalone parts, but also of their interaction and of the global properties that emerge at the system level by means of the interaction among the parts. This thesis focuses on the adoption of multi-agent systems (MAS) as a suitable paradigm for Systems Biology, for developing models and simulation of complex biological systems. Multi-agent system have been recently introduced in informatics context as a suitabe paradigm for modelling and engineering complex systems. Roughly speaking, a MAS can be conceived as a set of autonomous and interacting entities, called agents, situated in some kind of nvironment, where they fruitfully interact and coordinate so as to obtain a coherent global system behaviour. The claim of this work is that the general properties of MAS make them an effective approach for modelling and building simulations of complex biological systems, following the methodological principles identified by Systems Biology. In particular, the thesis focuses on cell populations as biological systems. In order to support the claim, the thesis introduces and describes (i) a MAS-based model conceived for modelling the dynamics of systems of cells interacting inside cell environment called niches. (ii) a computational tool, developed for implementing the models and executing the simulations. The tool is meant to work as a kind of virtual laboratory, on top of which kinds of virtual experiments can be performed, characterised by the definition and execution of specific models implemented as MASs, so as to support the validation, falsification and improvement of the models through the observation and analysis of the simulations. A hematopoietic stem cell system is taken as reference case study for formulating a specific model and executing virtual experiments.

Evolution of the traditional consumer in a power system to a prosumer has posed many problems in the traditional uni-directional grid. This evolution in the grid model has made it important to study the behaviour of microgrids. This thesis deals with the laboratory microgrid setup at the Munich School of Engineering, built to assist researchers in studying microgrids. The model is built in Dymola which is a tool for the OpenModelica language. Models for the different components were derived, suiting the purpose of this study. The equivalent parameters were derived from data sheets and other simulation programs such as PSCAD. The parameters were entered into the model grid and tested at steady state, firstly. This yielded satisfactory results that were similar to the reference results from MATPOWER power flow. Furthermore, fault conditions at several buses were simulated to observe the behaviour of the grid under these conditions. Recommendations for further developing this model to include more detailed models for components, such as power electronic converters, were made at the end of the thesis.

The voltage profile of the catenary between traction substations (TSSs) is affected by the trolleybus current intake and by its position with respect to the TSSs: the higher the current requested by the bus and the further the bus from the TSSs, the deeper the voltage drop. When the voltage drops below 500V, the trolleybus is forced to decrease its consumption by reducing its input current. This thesis deals with the analysis of the improvements that the installation of an BESS produces in the operation of a particularly loaded FS of the DC trolleybus network of the city of Bologna. The stationary BESS is charged by the TSSs during off-peak times and delivers the stored energy when the catenary is overloaded alleviating the load on the TSSs and reducing the voltage drops. Only IMC buses are considered in the prospect of a future disposal of all internal combustion engine vehicles. These trolleybuses cause deeper voltage drops because they absorb enough current to power their traction motor and recharge the on board battery. The control of the BESS aims to keep the catenary voltage within the admissible voltage range and makes sure that all physical limitations are met. A model of FS Marconi Trento Trieste is implemented in Simulink environment to simulate its daily operation and compare the behavior of the trolleybus network with and without BESS. From the simulation without BESS, the best location of the energy storage system is deduced, and the battery control is tuned. Furthermore, from the knowledge of the load curve and the battery control trans-characteristic, it is formulated a prediction of the voltage distribution at BESS connection point. The prediction is then compared with the simulation results to validate the Simulink model. The BESS allows to decrease the voltage drops along the catenary, the Joule losses and the current delivered by the TSSs, indicating that the BESS can be a solution to improve the operation of the trolleybus network.

In this thesis work a nonlinear model for Interdigitated Capacitors (IDCs) based on ferroelectric materials, is proposed. Through the properties of materials such as Hafnium-Zirconium Oxide (HfZrO2), it is possible to realize tunable radiofrequency (RF) circuits. In particular, the model proposed in this thesis describes the use of an IDC, realized on a High-Resistivity silicon substrate, as a phase shifter for beam-steering applications. The model is obtained starting from already present experimental measurements, through which it is possible to identify a circuit model. The model is tested for both low power values and other power values using Harmonic Balance simulations, which show an excellent convergence of the model up to 40 dBm of input power. Furthermore, an array composed by two patches operating both at 2.55 GHz, which exploits the tunable properties of the HfZrO-based IDC is proposed. At 0dBm the model shows a 47° phase shift with polarization -1 V and 1 V which leads to a 11° steering of the main lobe of the array.

Turbulent plasmas inside tokamaks are modeled and studied using guiding center theory, applied to charged test particles, in a Hamiltonian framework. The equations of motion for the guiding center dynamics, under the conditions of a constant and uniform magnetic field and turbulent electrostatic field are derived by averaging over the fast gyroangle, for the first and second order in the guiding center potential, using invertible changes of coordinates such as Lie transforms. The equations of motion are then made dimensionless, exploiting temporal and spatial periodicities of the model chosen for the electrostatic potential. They are implemented numerically in Python. Fast Fourier Transform and its inverse are used. Improvements to the original Python scripts are made, notably the introduction of a power-law curve fitting to account for anomalous diffusion, the possibility to integrate the equations in two steps to save computational time by removing trapped trajectories, and the implementation of multicolored stroboscopic plots to distinguish between trapped and untrapped guiding centers. The post-processing of the results is made in MATLAB. The values and ranges of the parameters chosen for the simulations are selected based on numerous simulations used as feedback tools. In particular, a recurring value for the threshold to detect trapped trajectories is evidenced. Effects of the Larmor radius, the amplitude of the guiding center potential and the intensity of its second order term are studied by analyzing their diffusive regimes, their stroboscopic plots and the shape of guiding center potentials. The main result is the identification of cases anomalous diffusion depending on the values of the parameters (mostly the Larmor radius). The transitions between diffusive regimes are identified. The presence of highways for the super-diffusive trajectories are unveiled. The influence of the charge on these transitions from diffusive to ballistic behaviors is analyzed.

In this Thesis work we investigate some of different cosmological background scenarios using one of the main probes used in cosmology: the halo mass function. The observed abundance of galaxy clusters (or similarly DM haloes) can indeed be compared to its theoretical predictions to derive fundamental constrains on the cosmological scenario assumed. Given the importance of exploring and constraining models degenerate with the ΛCDM one, we test the applicability of some notable halo mass function models to these scenarios. To this purpose, we made use of the DUSTGRAIN-pathfinder N-body simulations, which assume cosmological scenarios that include modified gravity in the form of f(R) models and massive neutrinos. We carried on the analysis of 3 simulation snapshots at different redshifts, z = 0, 0.5, 1, building multiple samples of dark matter haloes by applying different overdensity thresholds during the procedure of halo identification. We started our analysis by considering the halo mass function model introduced by Despali et al. (2016), who proposed a parametrization that encapsulates the effect of the different halo mass definitions and the relative evolution with the redshift. We calibrated the main parameters of this relation by using the ΛCDM halo catalogues extracted from the DUSTGRAIN-pathfinder simulations, fitting the measured halo abundances at all redshifts and density thresholds. Afterwards we tested the same model parametrization with halo catalogues extracted from the simulations implementing both modified gravity and massive neutrinos. We repeated therefore the calibration procedure on these data to search for discrepancies with respect to the ΛCDM model. Finally we focused the analysis on the cosmological models implementing modified gravity only. We took our ΛCDM calibrated halo mass function and we modified it with the additional f (R) gravity form proposed by Gupta et al. (2022).

The purpose of this thesis work is the study and creation of a harness modelling system. The model needs to simulate faithfully the physical behaviour of the harness, without any instability or incorrect movements. Since there are various simulation engines that try to model wiring's systems, this thesis work focused on the creation and test of a 3D environment with wiring and other objects through the PyChrono Simulation Engine. Fine-tuning of the simulation parameters were done during the test to achieve the most stable and correct simulation possible, but tests showed the intrinsic limits of the Engine regarding the collisions' detection between the various part of the cables, while collisions between cables and other physical objects such as pavement, walls and others are well managed by the simulator. Finally, the main purpose of the model is to be used to train Artificial Intelligence through Reinforcement Learnings techniques, so we designed, using OpenAI Gym APIs, the general structure of the learning environment, defining its basic functions and an initial framework.
