Lo scopo di questo progetto è la progettazione dell'interfaccia utente di un Decision Support System (DSS) web based per la gestione integrata dei vigneti utilizzando lo user centered design. Questo sistema permetterà di facilitare il lavoro dei viticoltori confrontando una serie di variabili e fattori che verranno utilizzati per migliorare le loro capacita decisionali ed ottenere un livello ottimale di produttività del vino.

In epoca contemporanea, la tecnologia ha subito una diffusione massiva e ha pervaso ogni ambito della vita dell’uomo, che sia esso scolastico, lavorativo, o ludico, cambiandone così radicalmente lo stile di vita sotto tutti i punti di vista. Sono infatti numerosissimi gli strumenti informatici che ad oggi supportano l'esercizio della maggior parte delle professioni, e che risultano peraltro ogni giorno più accurati e potenti: questo è il caso di Nutribook, un software gestionale in-cloud pensato per assistere i professionisti del mondo della nutrizione (Biologi Nutrizionisti, Dietologi, Dietisti) nelle attività quotidiane di visita dei pazienti e nell’organizzazione della propria agenda. Nell'ottica di poter offrire agli utenti un servizio sempre più esteso, il presente elaborato riporta il progetto di tesi svolto presso Deasoft s.r.l., azienda proprietaria di Nutribook, volto ad integrare tale software con un modulo dedicato all’attività di elaborazione di diete e piani alimentari. L'obiettivo principale del progetto presentato nell’elaborato risiede non solo nell'aspetto realizzativo del prodotto, ma anche nel tentativo di renderne la fruizione da parte dell'utente target il più possibile semplice, intuitiva e soddisfacente, mediante tecniche di potenziamento della User Experience. Il tirocinio per la redazione della presente tesi, nato a partire dall’esperienza di tirocinio curricolare, ha previsto come attività principali la conduzione di studi approfonditi in materia di User Experience, la partecipazione alla fase di analisi del dominio e dei requisiti e, infine, la collaborazione al design delle interfacce da realizzare mediante prototipi.

La tesi affronta il tema del design applicato all’ambito healthcare, in particolare la ricerca è indirizzata all’approfondimento della malattia celiaca. Attraverso un approccio integrato al design, è stato progettato un servizio volto a sostenere il paziente celiaco neo-diagnosticato nei 30 giorni immediatamente successivi alla diagnosi. Il progetto si compone di una serie di strumenti riprogettati a partire dai servizi promossi dall’Associazione Italiana Celiachia, disegnati a misura di utente, con l’obiettivo di semplificare il contatto con l’Associazione e coinvolgere, informare e sensibilizzare, sia gli attori interni che gli attori esterni al contesto. È stato studiato l’aspetto psicologico e psico-sociale della malattia per una progettazione che tenesse conto dei reali bisogni e delle necessità dei pazienti celiaci, così che l’esperienza di diagnosi risulti meno impattante e sia facilitato il passaggio verso un cambiamento dello stile di vita.

Questa tesi si occupa degli aspetti di usabilità nell'interazione degli utenti con le applicazioni, usando le tecniche di generazione automatica della Model-Driven Architecture. Viene prodotto un generatore di applicazioni model-driven, basato su un modello di progettazione Goal-Oriented, con risultati apprezzabili nel fornire all'utente un'interazione dinamica con l'applicazione prodotta.

In the collective imaginaries a robot is a human like machine as any androids in science fiction. However the type of robots that you will encounter most frequently are machinery that do work that is too dangerous, boring or onerous. Most of the robots in the world are of this type. They can be found in auto, medical, manufacturing and space industries. Therefore a robot is a system that contains sensors, control systems, manipulators, power supplies and software all working together to perform a task. The development and use of such a system is an active area of research and one of the main problems is the development of interaction skills with the surrounding environment, which include the ability to grasp objects. To perform this task the robot needs to sense the environment and acquire the object informations, physical attributes that may influence a grasp. Humans can solve this grasping problem easily due to their past experiences, that is why many researchers are approaching it from a machine learning perspective finding grasp of an object using information of already known objects. But humans can select the best grasp amongst a vast repertoire not only considering the physical attributes of the object to grasp but even to obtain a certain effect. This is why in our case the study in the area of robot manipulation is focused on grasping and integrating symbolic tasks with data gained through sensors. The learning model is based on Bayesian Network to encode the statistical dependencies between the data collected by the sensors and the symbolic task. This data representation has several advantages. It allows to take into account the uncertainty of the real world, allowing to deal with sensor noise, encodes notion of causality and provides an unified network for learning. Since the network is actually implemented and based on the human expert knowledge, it is very interesting to implement an automated method to learn the structure as in the future more tasks and object features can be introduced and a complex network design based only on human expert knowledge can become unreliable. Since structure learning algorithms presents some weaknesses, the goal of this thesis is to analyze real data used in the network modeled by the human expert, implement a feasible structure learning approach and compare the results with the network designed by the expert in order to possibly enhance it.

Web is constantly evolving, thanks to the 2.0 transition, HTML5 new features and the coming of cloud-computing, the gap between Web and traditional desktop applications is tailing off. Web-apps are more and more widespread and bring several benefits compared to traditional ones. On the other hand reference technologies, JavaScript primarly, are not keeping pace, so a paradim shift is taking place in Web programming, and so many new languages and technologies are coming out. First objective of this thesis is to survey the reference and state-of-art technologies for client-side Web programming focusing in particular on what concerns concurrency and asynchronous programming. Taking into account the problems that affect existing technologies, we finally design simpAL-web, an innovative approach to tackle Web-apps development, based on the Agent-oriented programming abstraction and the simpAL language. == Versione in italiano: Il Web è in continua evoluzione, grazie alla transizione verso il 2.0, alle nuove funzionalità introdotte con HTML5 ed all’avvento del cloud-computing, il divario tra le applicazioni Web e quelle desktop tradizionali va assottigliandosi. Le Web-apps sono sempre più diffuse e presentano diversi vantaggi rispetto a quelle tradizionali. D’altra parte le tecnologie di riferimento, JavaScript in primis, non stanno tenendo il passo, motivo per cui la programmazione Web sta andando incontro ad un cambio di paradigma e nuovi linguaggi e tecnologie stanno spuntando sempre più numerosi. Primo obiettivo di questa tesi è di passare al vaglio le tecnologie di riferimento ed allo stato dell’arte per quel che riguarda la programmmazione Web client-side, porgendo particolare attenzione agli aspetti inerenti la concorrenza e la programmazione asincrona. Considerando i principali problemi di cui soffrono le attuali tecnologie passeremo infine alla progettazione di simpAL-web, un approccio innovativo con cui affrontare lo sviluppo di Web-apps basato sulla programmazione orientata agli Agenti e sul linguaggio simpAL.

Data Distribution Management (DDM) is a core part of High Level Architecture standard, as its goal is to optimize the resources used by simulation environments to exchange data. It has to filter and match the set of information generated during a simulation, so that each federate, that is a simulation entity, only receives the information it needs. It is important that this is done quickly and to the best in order to get better performances and avoiding the transmission of irrelevant data, otherwise network resources may saturate quickly. The main topic of this thesis is the implementation of a super partes DDM testbed. It evaluates the goodness of DDM approaches, of all kinds. In fact it supports both region and grid based approaches, and it may support other different methods still unknown too. It uses three factors to rank them: execution time, memory and distance from the optimal solution. A prearranged set of instances is already available, but we also allow the creation of instances with user-provided parameters. This is how this thesis is structured. We start introducing what DDM and HLA are and what do they do in details. Then in the first chapter we describe the state of the art, providing an overview of the most well known resolution approaches and the pseudocode of the most interesting ones. The third chapter describes how the testbed we implemented is structured. In the fourth chapter we expose and compare the results we got from the execution of four approaches we have implemented. The relatively young discipline of astronautics represents one of the scientifically most fascinating and technologically advanced achievements of our time. The human exploration in space does not offer only extraordinary research possibilities but also demands high requirements from man and technology. The space environment provides a lot of attractive experimental tools towards the understanding of fundamental mechanism in natural sciences. It has been shown that especially reduced gravity and elevated radiation, two distinctive factors in space, influence the behavior of biological systems significantly. For this reason one of the key objectives on board of an earth orbiting laboratory is the research in the field of life sciences, covering the broad range from botany, human physiology and crew health up to biotechnology. The Columbus Module is the only European low gravity platform that allows researchers to perform ambitious experiments in a continuous time frame up to several months. Biolab is part of the initial outfitting of the Columbus Laboratory; it is a multi-user facility supporting research in the field of biology, e.g. effect of microgravity and space radiation on cell cultures, micro-organisms, small plants and small invertebrates. The Biolab IEC are projects designed to work in the automatic part of Biolab. In this moment in the TO-53 department of Airbus Defence & Space (formerly Astrium) there are two experiments that are in phase C/D of the development and they are the subject of this thesis: CELLRAD and CYTOSKELETON. They will be launched in soft configuration, that means packed inside a block of foam that has the task to reduce the launch loads on the payload. Until 10 years ago the payloads which were launched in soft configuration were supposed to be structural safe by themselves and a specific structural analysis could be waived on them; with the opening of the launchers market to private companies (that are not under the direct control of the international space agencies), the requirements on the verifications of payloads are changed and they have become much more conservative. In 2012 a new random environment has been introduced due to the new Space-X launch specification that results to be particularly challenging for the soft launched payloads. The last ESA specification requires to perform structural analysis on the payload for combined loads (random vibration, quasi-steady acceleration and pressure). The aim of this thesis is to create FEM models able to reproduce the launch configuration and to verify that all the margins of safety are positive and to show how they change because of the new Space-X random environment. In case the results are negative, improved design solution are implemented. Based on the FEM result a study of the joins has been carried out and, when needed, a crack growth analysis has been performed.

Every year, thousand of surgical treatments are performed in order to fix up or completely substitute, where possible, organs or tissues affected by degenerative diseases. Patients with these kind of illnesses stay long times waiting for a donor that could replace, in a short time, the damaged organ or the tissue. The lack of biological alternates, related to conventional surgical treatments as autografts, allografts, e xenografts, led the researchers belonging to different areas to collaborate to find out innovative solutions. This research brought to a new discipline able to merge molecular biology, biomaterial, engineering, biomechanics and, recently, design and architecture knowledges. This discipline is named Tissue Engineering (TE) and it represents a step forward towards the substitutive or regenerative medicine. One of the major challenge of the TE is to design and develop, using a biomimetic approach, an artificial 3D anatomy scaffold, suitable for cells adhesion that are able to proliferate and differentiate themselves as consequence of the biological and biophysical stimulus offered by the specific tissue to be replaced. Nowadays, powerful instruments allow to perform analysis day by day more accurateand defined on patients that need more precise diagnosis and treatments.Starting from patient specific information provided by TC (Computed Tomography) microCT and MRI(Magnetic Resonance Imaging), an image-based approach can be performed in order to reconstruct the site to be replaced. With the aid of the recent Additive Manufacturing techniques that allow to print tridimensional objects with sub millimetric precision, it is now possible to practice an almost complete control of the parametrical characteristics of the scaffold: this is the way to achieve a correct cellular regeneration. In this work, we focalize the attention on a branch of TE known as Bone TE, whose the bone is main subject. Bone TE combines osteoconductive and morphological aspects of the scaffold, whose main properties are pore diameter, structure porosity and interconnectivity. The realization of the ideal values of these parameters represents the main goal of this work: here we'll a create simple and interactive biomimetic design process based on 3D CAD modeling and generative algorithmsthat provide a way to control the main properties and to create a structure morphologically similar to the cancellous bone. Two different typologies of scaffold will be compared: the first is based on Triply Periodic MinimalSurface (T.P.M.S.) whose basic crystalline geometries are nowadays used for Bone TE scaffolding; the second is based on using Voronoi's diagrams and they are more often used in the design of decorations and jewellery for their capacity to decompose and tasselate a volumetric space using an heterogeneous spatial distribution (often frequent in nature). In this work, we will show how to manipulate the main properties (pore diameter, structure porosity and interconnectivity) of the design TE oriented scaffolding using the implementation of generative algorithms: "bringing back the nature to the nature".

The following research thesis is about a retrofit project made in Denmark, Copenhagen, and carried out on one of the buildings belonging to the Royal Danish Academy. The key assumption and base of the entire research process is that, up to now, the standard procedure in retrofit cases like this provides as comparative method between de facto and design, the use of Energy Simulation software. These programs generally divide the space into different thermal zones, assigning to each of them different levels of employment, activities, set-point temperatures set for cooling and heating analysis and so on, but always providing average and constant values, usually taken in the middle point of the single thermal zone. Therefore, the project and its research path stems from the attempt to investigate the potentialities of this kind of designing for retrofit process, as previously anticipated not antithetical but complementary to that classic energy-based retrofit, thus passing from the building scale, and all its thermal zones, to the users' scale, related to humans and microclimates. The main software used in this process is Autodesk Simulation CFD. The idea behind the project is that in certain situations, for example, it will not be necessary to add throughout insulation layers (previously parameterized and optimized with Design Builder), and that even in Winter conditions, due maybe to the users' activities, the increased level of clothing (clo) and the heat produced by equipments, thermal comfort could be achieved also in areas characterized by considerably lower MRT. After the analysis of the State of Art and its simulations, the project has still been supported by the tool itself, the CFD Software, in an iterative process aimed at achieving visible improvements in terms of MRT, on spaces with different needs and characteristics, both in Winter and Summer regimes.

An analysis and a subsequent solution is here presented. This document is about a groin design able to contrast the erosion actions given by waves in Lido di Dante. Advantages will be visible also for Fiumi Uniti's inlet, in the north side of the shoreline. Beach future progression and growth will be subjected to monitoring actions in the years after groin construction. The resulting effects of the design will have a positive impact not only on the local fauna and environment, but also, a naturalistic appeal will increase making new type of tourists coming not only for recreational purposes. The design phase is focused on possible design alternatives and their features. Particular interest is given to scouring phenomena all around the groin after its construction. Groin effects will impact not only on its south side, instead they will cause an intense erosion process on the downdrift front. Here, many fishing hut would be in danger, thus a beach revetment structure is needed to avoid any future criticality. In addiction, a numerical model based on a generalized shoreline change numerical model, also known as GENESIS, has been applied to the study area in order to perform a simplistic analysis of the shoreline and its future morphology. Critical zones are visible in proximity of the Fiumi Uniti's river inlet, where currents from the sea and the river itself start the erosion process that is affecting Lido di Dante since mid '80s, or even before. The model is affected by several assumptions that make results not to be interpreted as a real future trend of the shore. Instead the model allows the user to have a more clear view about critical processes induced by monochromatic inputed waves. In conclusion, the thesis introduce a wide analysis on a complex erosion process that is affecting many shoreline nowadays. A groin design is seen as a hard solution it is considered to be the only means able to decrease the rate of erosion.

Every day, firefighters are involved in emergency response tasks, which are both physically and psychologically exhausting. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the number of firefighters who are injured or die while performing their job is incredibly high. When firefighters are injured, they must follow a rehabilitation therapy program to physically recover and depending on the severity of their injuries they may not fully recuperate at all. If they sustain a permanent injury that they cannot recover from, they may be out of work for the rest of their career. This research focuses on studying and developing a special device, known as an exoskeleton, aimed at assisting and preventing potential injuries among firefighters. Nowadays, the usage of human exoskeletons is becoming more common in a variety of fields. In fact, it is currently being researched and developed for soldiers, athletes, and critical care patients around the world. Most of the existing exoskeletons have been developed for the assistance of the lower human body. The research that I have done in my thesis instead relates to mobility of the upper body. Many of the existing exoskeletons have been analyzed and compared to each other and the human body, such as the study of human arm parts and their movements around three principal joints: shoulder, elbow, and wrist. The correct design of the shoulder exoskeleton join is still a big challenge for designers because of the complexity of biomechanical human movements. The exoskeleton must fit perfectly to the human body, otherwise it could be harmful for both the recovery and the safety of the user. The goal of this thesis is to design an upper-body arm exoskeleton worn by firefighters and develop and test a PID control system to prevent the risk of injuries while performing their job.

Questo volume di tesi ha l'obiettivo di descrivere l'intero processo di progettazione, sviluppo e rilascio di un'applicazione mobile, coinvolgendo anche gli end-user nella fase finale di valutazione. In particolare, il volume di tesi si sviluppa su quattro capitoli che descrivono 1) l'analisi dei requisiti, seguendo un approccio AGILE, 2) l'analisi del ciclo di vita del prodotto (inclusi business model e business plan), 3) l'architettura del sistema, e, infine, 4) la valutazione dell’usabilità e della UX. L'applicazione usata come caso di studio è "LetsBox!", un'applicazione mobile della categoria puzzle game, sviluppata sfruttando il framework di sviluppo di app ibride IONIC 5, con l’obiettivo di creare un gioco che coinvolgesse il giocatore tanto da farlo giocare nei suoi momenti di svago e indurlo a sfidare i record esistenti ma, nello stesso tempo creare un gioco originale e non esistente sul mercato.
