The aim of this dissertation is to propose the translation of four chapters from "The invisible history of the human race", an essay by the Australian author and journalist Christine Kenneally. This essay offers a non-systematic overview upon genealogy in connection to the idea of personal identity; above all, the author wants to persuade the reader that genealogy could be the perfect linking point between history and science, family lines and DNA. The translated chapters particularly concentrate on the reasons of the current underestimation of genealogy, which, according to Kenneally, lies in the Nazi’s distorted use of ancestry and in the exploitation of the idea of biological diversity in order to discriminate people. The dissertation is composed of four chapters. The first chapter consists in a concise analysis of the characteristics of the textual genre and in a theoretical introduction and approach to the translation of essays, where the main generic and essay-specific translation strategies are outlined. The second chapter presents a detailed illustration of the topics treated in the essay and particularly in the translated pages. The third chapter contains the translation and the fourth presents a systematic comment to the translation and to the choices made during the translation of the text.

J. M. Coetzee's Foe is not only a post-colonial novel, but it is also a re-writing of a classic, and its main themes are language, authorship, power and identity. Moreover, Foe is narrated by a woman, while written by a male, Nobel prize winning South African author. The aim of my tesina is to focus on the question of authorship and the role of language in Foe. Without any claim to be exhaustive, in the first section I will examine some selected extracts of Coetzee's book, in order to provide an analysis of the novel. These quotations will mainly be its metalinguistic parts and will be analysed in thetheory” sections of my work, relying on literary theory and on previous works on the novel. Among others, I will cover themes such as the relationship between speech and writing, the connection between writing, history, and memory, the role of silence and alternative ways of communicating and the relationship between literary authority and truth. These arguments will be the foundation for my second section, in which I will attempt to shed a light on the importance of the novel from a linguistic point of view, but always keeping an eye on the implication that this has on authorship. While it is true that it is less politically-permeated than Coetzee's previous works, Foe is above all a “journey of discovery” in the world of language and authorship. In fact, it becomes a warning for any person immersed in the ocean of language since, while everyone naturally tends to trust speech and writing as the only medium through which one can get closer to the truth, authority never is a synonym of reliability, and language is a system of communication behind which structures of power, misconceptions, lies, and treacherous tides easily hide.

The astrophysical context in which this thesis project lies concerns the comprehension of the mutual interaction between the accretion onto a Super Massive Black Hole (SMBH) and the Star Formation (SF), that take place in the host galaxy. This is one of the key topic of the modern extragalactic astrophysical research. Indeed, it is widely accepted that to understand the physics of a galaxy, the contribution of a possible central AGN must be taken into account. The aim of this thesis is the study of the physical processes of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 34. This source was selected because of the wide collection of multiwavelength data available in the literature. In addition, recently, it has been observed with the Atacama Large Submillimeter/Millimeter Array (ALMA) in Band 9. This project is divided in two main parts: first of all, we reduced and analyzed the ALMA data, obtaining the continuum and CO(6-5) maps; then, we looked for a coherent explaination of NGC 34 physical characteristics. In particular, we focused on the ISM physics, in order to understand its properties in terms of density, chemical composition and dominant radiation field (SF or accretion). This work has been done through the analysis of the spectral distribution of several CO transitions as a function of the transition number (CO SLED), obtained joining the CO(6-5) line with other transitions available in the literature. More precisely, the observed CO SLED has been compared with ISM models, including Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) and X-ray-Dominated Regions (XDRs). These models have been obtained through the state-of-the-art photoionization code CLOUDY. Along with the observed CO SLED, we have taken into account other physical properties of NGC 34, such as the Star Formation Rate (SFR), the gas mass and the X-ray luminosity.
