Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Halide Perovskites (HOIPs) include a large class of materials described with the general formula ABX3, where A is an organic cation, B an inorganic cation and X an halide anion. HOIPs show excellent optoelectronic characteristics such as tunable band gap, high adsorption coefficient and great mobility life-time. A subclass of these materials, the so-called two- dimensional (2D) layered HOIPs, have emerged as potential alternatives to traditional 3D analogs to enhance the stability and increase performance of perovskite devices, with particular regard in the area of ionizing radiation detectors, where these materials have reached truly remarkable milestones. One of the key challenges for future development of efficient and stable 2D perovskite X-ray detector is a complete understanding of the nature of defects that lead to the formation of deep states. Deep states act as non-radiative recombination centers for charge carriers and are one of the factors that most hinder the development of efficient 2D HOIPs-based X-ray detectors. In this work, deep states in PEA2PbBr4 were studied through Photo-Induced Current Transient Spectroscopy (PICTS), a highly sensitive spectroscopic technique capable of detecting the presence of deep states in highly resistive ohmic materials, and characterizing their activation energy, capture cross section and, under stringent conditions, the concentration of these states. The evolution of deep states in PEA 2 PbBr 4 was evaluated after exposure of the material to high doses of ionizing radiation and during aging (one year). The data obtained allowed us to evaluate the contribution of ion migration in PEA2PbBr4. This work represents an important starting point for a better understanding of transport and recombination phenomena in 2D perovskites. To date, the PICTS technique applied to 2D perovskites has not yet been reported in the scientific literature.

It is well-known that crystalline materials obtain their fundamental physical properties from the molecular arrangement within the solid, and altering the placement and or interactions between these molecules can impact the properties of the particular solid. Solid state chemistry looks at an attempt to alter the chemical and physical solid-state properties of APIs through many different strategies as the formation of salts, polymorphs, hydrates, solvates, and cocrystals. The final aim of this work is to study the chemical and physical propriety of new crystal structures. The work consists of three parts. The first is the cocrystallization of α,ω-alkanedicarboxylics acids with pirimidine. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of this adduct have been carried out at RT, 150 and 200 K. The cocrystals show an alteration of their melting point similar to pure acids. The two significant deviations are for the cocrystals with succinico and glutarico acids. The second object of work is the structure determination of β polymorph undecandioic acids. In literature is known the other polymorph α. We observed that the thermodynamic relation for this dimorphics system is monotropic. In the third part we synthesized and analyzed the stability of four new salts of serine and oxalic acid. This project highlights the advantage of the solid state synthesis.

One of the most diffused electronic device is the field effect transistor (FET), contained in number of billions in each electronic device. Organic optoelectronics is an emerging field that exploits the unique properties of conjugated organic materials to develop new applications that require a combination of performance, low cost and processability. Organic single crystals are the material with best performances and purity among the variety of different form of organic semiconductors. This thesis is focused on electrical and optical characterization of Rubrene single crystal bulk and thin films. Rubrene bulk is well known but for the first time we studied thin films. The first Current-voltage characterization has been performed for the first time on three Rubrene thin films with three different thickness to extract the charge carriers mobility and to assess its crystalline structure. As results we see that mobility increase with thickness. Field effect transistor based on Rubrene thin films on $SiO_2$ have been characterize by current-voltage (I-V) analyses (at several temperatures) and reveals a hopping conduction. Hopping behavior probably is due to the lattice mismatch with the substrate or intrinsic defectivity of the thin films. To understand effects of contact resistance we tested thin films with the Transmission Line Method (TLM) method. The TLM method revealeds that contact resistance is negligible but evidenced a Schottky behavior in a limited but well determined range of T. To avoid this effect we carried out annealing treatment after the electrode evaporation iswe performed a compete I-V characterization as a function of in temperature to extract the electronic density of states (DOS) distribution through the Space Charge Limited Current (SCLC) method. The results show a DOS with an exponential trenddistribution, as expected. The measured mobility of thin films is about 0.1cm^2/Vs and it increases with the film thickness. Further studies are necessary to investigate the reason and improve performances. From photocurrent spectrum we calculated an Eg of about 2.2eV and both thin films and bulk have a good crystal order. Further measurement are necessary to solve some open problems

The topic of my thesis was focused on the synthesis of heteroatomic Rh clusters stabilized by carbonyl ligands. I studied the reactivity of [Rh7(CO)16]3- with different Sb3+ and Ge4+ salts, and tried to synthesize new species by changing the reaction conditions. Indeed, in order to obtain new Rh-Sb and Rh-Ge clusters, I employed different stoichiometric ratios, solvents and atmospheres (N2 or CO). As far as the Rh-Sb system is concerned, I successfully synthesized three new compounds through two different reactions, namely [Rh20Sb3(CO)36][NEt4]3, [Rh21Sb2(CO)38][NEt4]5 and [Rh12Sb(CO)24][NEt4]3. At the same time, I investigated the Rh-Ge system and succeeded in the isolation of the new cluster [Rh14Ge2(CO)30][NEt4]2, along with [Rh12SbGePh2(CO)26][NEt4]2, by treating [Rh7(CO)16]3- with both Ge4+ and Sb3+ salts. Each compound has been characterized by IR spectroscopy, ESI-MS spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffractometry. Finally, I conduced chemical reactivity tests on some of the obtained compounds.

During this project we have synthetized different compounds belonging to the class of amino-boranes for the study of bis-aryl-B=N system. We have decided to keep unchanged the aryl components and change only the amine to observe the effect of that on the B=N bond. The used amines are modified carbazoles with functional groups chosen to amplify or disempower the steric and the conjugation effect. We have found that the evaluation of steric barrier was possible studying the gearing aryls rotation around the C-B bonds, while the conjugation barrier is instead given by the energy needed to break the formal double bond B=N and allow the amine rotation. The work started with a proposed synthesis, improved for every reaction, then the products are characterized by NMR, fluorometric spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and X-Ray diffraction on single crystal. The following study on rotational energy barrier was possible theoretically through DFT calculation and experimentally with techniques like Dynamic NMR and EXSY. The fluorometric analysis was done for the study of the solvatochromic propriety of the products.

Next to conventional solar panels that harvest direct sunlight, p-type dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been developed, which are able to harvest diffuse sunlight. Due to unwanted charge recombination events p-type DSSCs exhibit low power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Previous research has shown that dye-redox mediator (RM) interactions can prevent these recombination events, resulting in higher PCEs. It is unknown how the nature of dye-RM interactions affects the PCEs of pseudorotaxane-based solar cells. In this research this correlation is investigated by comparing one macrocycle, the 3-NDI, in combination with the three dyes that contains a recognition sites. 2D-DOSY-NMR experiments have been conducted to evaluate the diffusion constants (LogD) of the three couple. The research project has been stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic. The continuation of this thesis would have been to synthesize a dye on the basis of the data obtained from the diffusion tests and attempt the construction of a solar cell to then evaluate its effectiveness. During my training period I synthetized new Fe(0) cyclopentadienone compounds bearing a N-Heterocyclic Carbene ligand. The aim of the thesis was to achieve water solubility by modifications of the cyclopentadienone ligand. These new complexes have been modified using a sulfonation reaction, replacing an hydroxyl with a sulfate group, on the alkyl backbone of the cyclopentadienone ligand. All the complexes were characterized with IR, ESI-MS and NMR spectroscopy, and a new Fe(0) cyclopentadienone complex, involved as an intermediate, was obtained as a single crystal and was characterized also with X-Ray spectroscopy.

This study is focused on the synthesis, characterization and reactivity of new low nuclearity iron carbide carbonyl clusters. In particular, the oxidation of the highly reduced monocarbide tetraanionic cluster [Fe6C(CO)15]4- was studied in details using different oxidants ([Cp2Fe][PF6], HBF4·Et2O, MeI and EtI), different stoichiometries and experimental conditions. Different products were obtained depending on the reaction conditions, among which previously reported [Fe6C(CO)16]2- and [Fe5C(CO)14]2-, and new [Fe6C(CO)14(CO)13]4- and [Fe5C(CO)13(COMe)]3- were isolated and fully characterized. In the second part of this study, the reactions of [Fe6C(CO)15]4- with organic or inorganic molecules containing sulphur (S8, S2Cl2 and PhSH) were investigated aiming at introducing S-atoms within the structure of iron carbide carbonyl clusters. In particular, the reaction of [Fe6C(CO)15]4- with PhSH afforded the new [Fe6C(CO)14(SPh)]3- cluster. Conversely, using S8 and S2Cl2, oxidation of [Fe6C(CO)15]4- occurred following a path similar to that observed with other oxidizing agents. All these species have been analyzed by Single Crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) and IR spectroscopy.

The disintegration of stone materials used in sculpture and architecture due to the crystallization of salts is capable of irreparably damaging artistic objects and historic buildings. A number of phosphonates and carboxylates were tested here as potential crystallization modifiers for sodium carbonate crystallization. Precipitated phases during crystallization induced either by cooling or by evaporation tests were nahcolite (NaHCO3), natron (Na2CO3∙10H2O) and thermonatrite (Na2CO3∙H2O), identified using X-ray diffraction. By using the thermodynamic code PHREEQC and the calculation of the nucleation rate it was demonstrated that nahcolite had to be first phase formed during both tests. The formation of the other phases depended on the experimental conditions under which the two tests were conducted. Nahcolite nucleation is strongly inhibited in the presence of sodium citrate tribasic dihydrate (CA), polyacrylic acid 2100MW (PA) and etidronic acid (HEDP), when the additives are dosed at appropriate concentrations and the pH range of the resulting solution is about 8. Electrostatic attraction generated between the deprotonated organic additives and the cations present in solution appears to be the principal mechanism of additive-nahcolite interaction. Salt weathering tests, in addition to mercury intrusion porosimetry tests allowed to quantify the damage induced by such salts. FESEM observation of both salts grown on calcite single crystals and in limestone blocks subjected to salt crystallization tests allowed to identify the effect of these additives on crystal growth and development. The results show that PA seems to be the best inhibitor, while CA and HEDP, which show similar behaviors, are slightly less effective. The use of such effective crystallization inhibitors may lead to more efficient preventive conservation of ornamental stone affected by crystallization damage due to formation of sodium carbonate crystals.
