This Master thesis presents the results obtained in the curricular traineeship, carried out within the laboratories of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Bergen, during the Erasmus period, and within the Department of Industrial Chemistry of the University of Bologna. The project followed in Bergen concerned the synthesis of key intermediates used for the functionalization of the backbone of imidazole, using N,N'- diiodo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (“DIH”) as an iodinating agent, and employing an innovative kind of chemical reactor: the “Multijet Oscillating Disc Millireactor” (MJOD Reactor). Afterwards, the work performed in Bologna consisted in verifying the stability in solution of the above mentioned N,N'-diiodo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin utilising spectrophotometric techniques and High Performance Liquid Chromatography analyses (HPLC).

In a world where the problem of energy resources, pollution and all aspects related to these issues become more and more dominant, a greater commitment is needed in the search for solutions. The goal of this project is to make a contribution to the research and development of new materials to reduce the environmental impact in some fields. First of all, we tried to synthesize and prepare an isatin-based membrane which has the potential for use in separating industrial gases. Furthermore, ion exchange membranes, specifically hydroxide exchange membranes (HEMs) derived from the same product can be developed for fuel cells (HEMFC) applications. These materials are essential for energy conversion and storage. The most difficult challenge is to guarantee their thermal stability and stability in corrosive environments such as alkali without losing efficiency. In recent years the poly- hydroxyalkylation catalysed with superacids, e.g. TFSA, has become increasingly studied. This reaction is exploited for the synthesis of the compounds of this thesis. After a preliminary optimization of the reaction conditions it was concluded that due to the rigidity and excessive reactivity of the system, it was not possible to obtain the isatin-based membrane to evaluate the gas separation properties. The synthesis of precursor materials for HEMs was successful by using 1-(4-bromobutyl)indoline-2,3-dione (BID) instead of isatin. A characterization of the obtained polymers was carried out using NMR, TGA and DSC analyses, and subsequently the membranes were functionalized with different ammonium-based cations. Unfortunately, this last step was not successful due to the appearance of side reactions. Future studies on the mechanism and kinetics of the reaction solve this obstacle.

This thesis deals with the sizing and analysis of the electrical power system of a petrochemical plant. The activity was carried out in the framework of an electrical engineering internship. The sizing and electrical calculations, as well as the study of the dynamic behavior of network quantities, are accomplished by using the ETAP (Electrical Transient Analyzer Program) software. After determining the type and size of the loads, the calculation of power flows is carried out for all possible network layout and different power supply configurations. The network is normally operated in a double radial configuration. However, the sizing must be carried out taking into account the most critical configuration, i.e., the temporary one of single radial operation, and also considering the most unfavorable power supply conditions. The calculation of shortcircuit currents is then carried out and the appropriate circuit breakers are selected. Where necessary, capacitor banks are sized in order to keep power factor at the point of common coupling within the preset limits. The grounding system is sized by using the finite element method. For loads with the highest level of criticality, UPS are sized in order to ensure their operation even in the absence of the main power supply. The main faults that can occur in the plant are examined, determining the intervention times of the protections to ensure that, in case of failure on one component, the others can still properly operate. The report concludes with the dynamic and stability analysis of the power system during island operation, in order to ensure that the two gas turbines are able to support the load even during transient conditions.

Cor-Ten is a particular kind of steel, belonging to low-alloyed steel; thanks to his aesthetic features and resistance to atmospheric corrosion, this material is largely used in architectural, artistic and infrastructural applications. After environmental exposure, Cor-Ten steel exhibits the characteristic ability to self-protect from corrosion, by the development of a stable and adherent protective layer. However, some environmental factors can influence the formation and stability of the patina. In particular, exposure of Cor-Ten to polluted atmosphere (NOx, SOx, O3) or coastal areas (marine spray) may cause problems to the protective layer and, as a consequence, a release of alloying metals, which can accumulate near the structures. Some of these metals, such as Cr and Ni, could be very dangerous for soils and water because of their large toxicity. The aim of this work was to study the corrosion behavior of Cor-Ten exposed to an urban-coastal site (Rimini, Italy). Three different kinds of commercial surface finish (bare and pre-patinated, with or without a beeswax covering) were examined, both in sheltered and unsheltered exposure conditions. Wet deposition brushing the specimens surface (leaching solutions) are monthly collected and analyzed to evaluate the extent of metal release and the form in which they leave the surface, for example, as water-soluble compounds or non-adherent corrosion products. Five alloying metals (Fe, Cu, Cr, Mn and Ni) and nine ions (Cl-, NO3-, NO2-, SO42-, Na+, Ca2+, K+, Mg2+, NH4+) are determined through Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy and Ion Chromatography, respectively. Furthermore, the evolution and the behaviour of the patina are periodically followed by surface investigations (SEM-EDS and Raman Spectroscopy). After two years of exposure, the results show that Bare Cor-Ten, cheaper than the other analyzed specimens, even though undergoes the greater mass variation, his metal release is comparable to the release of the pre-patinated samples. The behavior of pre-patinated steel, with or without beeswax covering, do not show particular difference. This exposure environment doesn’t allow a completely stabilization of the patina; nevertheless an estimate of metal release after 10 years of exposure points out that the environmental impact of Cor-Ten is very low: for example, the release of chromium in the soluble fraction is less than 10 mg if we consider an exposed wall of 10 m2.

Radial velocities measured from near-infrared (NIR) spectra are a potential tool to search for extrasolar planets around cool stars. High resolution infrared spectrographs now available reach the high precision of visible instruments, with a constant improvement over time. GIANO is an infrared echelle spectrograph and it is a powerful tool to provide high resolution spectra for accurate radial velocity measurements of exo-planets and for chemical and dynamical studies of stellar or extragalactic objects. No other IR instruments have the GIANO's capability to cover the entire NIR wavelength range. In this work we develop an ensemble of IDL procedures to measure high precision radial velocities on a few GIANO spectra acquired during the commissioning run, using the telluric lines as wevelength reference. In Section 1.1 various exoplanet search methods are described. They exploit different properties of the planetary system. In Section 1.2 we describe the exoplanet population discovered trough the different methods. In Section 1.3 we explain motivations for NIR radial velocities and the challenges related the main issue that has limited the pursuit of high-precision NIR radial velocity, that is, the lack of a suitable calibration method. We briefly describe calibration methods in the visible and the solutions for IR calibration, for instance, the use of telluric lines. The latter has advantages and problems, described in detail. In this work we use telluric lines as wavelength reference. In Section 1.4 the Cross Correlation Function (CCF) method is described. This method is widely used to measure the radial velocities. In Section 1.5 we describe GIANO and its main science targets. In Chapter 2 observational data obtained with GIANO spectrograph are presented and the choice criteria are reported. In Chapter 3 we describe the detail of the analysis and examine in depth the flow chart reported in Section 3.1. In Chapter 4 we give the radial velocities measured with our IDL procedure for all available targets. We obtain an rms scatter in radial velocities of about 7 m/s. Finally, we conclude that GIANO can be used to measure radial velocities of late type stars with an accuracy close to or better than 10 m/s, using telluric lines as wevelength reference. In 2014 September GIANO is being operative at TNG for Science Verification and more observational data will allow to further refine this analysis.
