Our contemporary society still sees the fat body as a problematic issue. This refusal originated as a racist control practice and developed as an esthetical and medical problem, resulting in the stigmatization and discrimination of this marginalized social group. Drawing on a corpus of about 157,000 words, the present study aims to shed light on how journalistic language might play a role in reinforcing prejudices towards fat people and, consequently, their stigmatization. The corpus contains 305 articles on fatness and/or obesity that were taken from six Italian newspapers representing different political leanings. The analysis is based on three main research questions: which frames are used to represent fat people in Italian newspapers? Do women get a particular treatment when talked about in relation to fatness/obesity? Do the articles employ any stigmatizing discourse strategies? Results show particular emphasis on the medical aspects of fatness/obesity, in terms of consequences on fat people’s health due to their lifestyle choices, with little to no consideration of societal responsibility around weight stigma. There is also evidence of women being talked about more than men in connection with this topic, especially with regards to their duty to appear in a certain way and their responsibility as mothers. Furthermore, articles display a vast amount of stigmatizing discourses, that go from offensive referential and predicational strategies, to an explicit mockery of fat people. In conclusion, the journalistic discourses on fatness/obesity analyzed in the present study show problematic traits possibly affecting fat people’s quality of life and should be examined more extensively as to establish a generalizing pattern by taking a larger set of data into account.

The advent of the hydrogen economy has already been predicted but it does not represent a tangible reality yet. However, decarbonizing the global economy and particularly the energy sector is vital to limit global warming and reduce the incumbent environmental problems. Hydrogen is a promising zero-emission fuel that could replace traditional fossil fuels, playing a key role in the transition towards a more sustainable economy. At present, hydrogen-powered cars are already spread worldwide and the deployment of hydrogen buses seems to be the next goal in the decarbonization process of the transportation sector. In contrast with the undeniable benefits introduced by the use of this alternative fuel, given its hazardous properties, safety is a topic of high concern. The present study concerns the evaluation of the risks linked to the on board storage of hydrogen on hydrogen-powered buses in case of road accident. Currently, hydrogen can be stored on board as a high-pressure gas, as a cryogenic liquid or in cryo-compressed form. Those solutions are compared from a safety point of view. First, the final accidental scenarios that could follow the release of the fuel in case of a road crash are pointed out. Secondly, threshold values for the hazardous effects of each scenario are fixed and the corresponding damage distances are calculated thanks to the use of the software PHAST 8.4. Finally, indicators are quantified to compare the different options. Results are discussed to find out the safer solution and to evaluate whether the replacement of fossil fuels with hydrogen introduces new safety issues.

Galaxy clusters and groups are the most massive bounded structures and the knots of the large-scale structure of the Universe. These structures reside in dark matter haloes, hosting tens to hundreds of galaxies and they are filled with hot and rarefied gas. Radio Galaxies are a peculiar class of galaxies with a luminosity in the radio band up to 10^46 erg/s between 10 MHz and 100 GHz. These galaxies are a subclass of AGN in which there is accretion on the Super Massive Black Hole. The accretion generates jets of relativistic particles and magnetic fields which lose energy through synchrotron radiation, best observable at radio frequencies. The study of the spectral ageing of the AGN plasma is fundamental to understand its evolution, interaction with the environment and to constrain the AGN duty cycle. n this thesis, we have investigated the duty cycle of the nearby remnant radio galaxy NGC 6086, located in the centre of the galaxy group Abell 2162. We have made major steps forward thanks to the new high-sensitivity interferometers in the low-frequency radio band. We have detected for the first time three filaments of emission and a second couple of lobes. We have performed an integrated and resolved analysis on the previously known inner lobes, the new filaments and the older outer lobes. We have performed an age estimate of the two pairs of lobes to give constraints on the duty cycle of the source and an estimate of its active time.
