Habibi. Proposta di traduzione di un romanzo young adult

This dissertation intends to present and analyse the translation from English into Italian of the first twenty-five chapters of Habibi, a teenager and young adult’s novel written by the Palestinian-American author Naomi Shihab Nye. It has been necessary to present the theoretical approach to the literary translation studies, in order to focus the attention on the translation problems and provide suitable solutions and strategies. The first chapter gives an historical perspective on children’s literature from the end of the Nineteenth century till today, distinguishing the Italian and the American contexts. The description of the evolution process of this literary genre, which developed to satisfy the needs of the educational system, is its central issue. At the end of the chapter, we outline the main traits characterizing children’s literature and the image of the ideal reader. The second chapter provides an overview on Palestinian literature, especially on the features of the contemporary novel and the Diaspora literature. Afterwards, we present the author Naomi Shihab Nye and the book Habibi. In the third chapter we analyze the novel, focusing the attention on the rhythm of the narration, on the linguistic registers and the textual peculiarities found during the reading stage, according to the features of the children’s literature. The fourth chapter consists of the translation of the first twenty-five chapters of the novel. The fifth chapter begins with a section about the translation theory, the literary translation studies, focusing on the translation of children’s literature. Finally, there is the translation analysis. Here we present the strategies and the choices of the translation process, along with some practical examples with reference to theoretical studies. Special attention is paid to culture-specific items, lexicon and syntax.The source text can be found in appendix.

"Dar voce a una voce": diversità e rappresentazione nella letteratura young adult. Proposta di traduzione di Gabi, a Girl in Pieces di Isabel Quintero.

In this dissertation, I will present my translation into Italian of several excerpts from Gabi, A Girl in Pieces, a young adult (YA) novel by Mexican-American author Isabel Quintero, along with examining the issues of diversity and representation in YA literature. This study aims to demonstrate the benefits of multicultural literature for young readers and the importance of publishing stories that reflect the diversity of the world we inhabit. The translation of the novel is accompanied by an analysis of its social, cultural, and literary context. The first chapter provides an overview of Chican@ history, literature, and culture, focusing on the concepts of identity and hybridity. The second chapter describes YA literature and its characteristics, outlines its history, and discusses the value of diverse books in the lives of teenage readers. Additionally, it cites relevant studies and statistics proving the dearth of diverse literature for young readers in the United States. The third chapter focuses specifically on the representation of Latin@s and Chican@s in literature for young readers, examining the main stereotypes that have plagued the depiction of this community and the new perspectives offered by Mexican-American YA authors. In the fourth chapter, I introduce Isabel Quintero and her novel Gabi, A Girl in Pieces, analyzing its plot, style, format, and main themes. In the fifth chapter, I provide my translation, which is then analyzed in the sixth and final chapter. The translation commentary details some of the problems I encountered and the strategies I applied. The sixth chapter also includes some observations on the translation of teenage speech, of multilingual texts, and of children’s and YA literature.

Fuori dai binari. Tradurre le identita non binarie nel romanzo Young Adult I Wish You All the Best di Mason Deaver

The goal of this final dissertation is to propose a partial translation of the Young Adult novel I Wish You All the Best by nonbinary author Mason Deaver, which was published in the United States by PUSH in 2019 and is currently still unpublished in Italy. The book follows the story of eighteen-year-old Ben De Backer. After coming out as nonbinary to their parents, they are kicked out of their home; thanks to the help of their older sister, they will manage to get back on their feet and start a new life, although their trauma will continue to pose a great obstacle to their growth and happiness. I Wish You All the Best is one of the first novels with a nonbinary protagonist in the Young Adult category and is particularly interesting from a linguistic standpoint. The first chapter serves as introduction to the author, Mason Deaver, their life and their relationship with gender identity and writing; and also as an introduction to the book itself and how its main characters and themes are developed in relation to the plot. The second chapter looks at the Young Adult genre as a whole; it explores its origins and development through the years and seeks to find a definition for this type of literature which has often been misrepresented both in the eyes of literary critics and the general public. Additionally, the chapter will describe some of the main characteristics of YA literature and analyze them in relation to I Wish You All the Best. The third chapter aims to examine the role of language, and how it can be inclusive to people outside of the gender binary. It will also touch upon the sociocultural contexts in which the speakers of different languages operate. The fourth and final chapter will present the translation of several passages taken from the novel I Wish You All the Best and offer an analysis of the most interesting and difficult aspects of this translation process.

"Love you two" di Maria Pallotta-Chiarolli: Tradurre un romanzo Young Adult di un'autrice italo-australiana

Lo scopo di questa Tesi di Laurea è quello di offrire una proposta di traduzione in italiano del romanzo LGBTQ per Young Adults Love You Two, di Maria Pallotta-Chiarolli. Quest'opera esplora temi delicati, come la bisessualità e il poliamore, dal punto di vista di una adolescente che scopre la propria identità e quella della sua famiglia italo-australiana. Questo studio fornisce inoltre una panoramica del contesto socio-culturale e letterario in cui il romanzo è stato pubblicato. Oltre ad esaminare le caratteristiche del libro, come genere letterario e tipologia, intenzionalità dell'autore, tematiche, funzione, stile e pubblico, si offre un'analisi dettagliata della strategia applicata nel processo traduttivo, che tende a conferire al testo un leggero effetto straniante, tale da evidenziarne le specificità culturale. La presente ricerca è stata condotta in parte in Australia presso la University of Melbourne e la Deakin University e si configura come un tentativo di mostrare la necessità e la possibilità di tradurre e pubblicare letteratura LGBT per ragazzi e ragazze in Italia.

La letteratura nel contesto mediale odierno: il fenomeno Young Adult

La tesi è dedicata a una riflessione sugli adattamenti, in particolare al rapporto tra letteratura e cinema e alla costruzione di narrazioni che si rivolgono a pubblici transnazionali, caratteristiche dell'età globale. Nello specifico si analizzano prodotti audiovisivi e letterari Young Adult contemporanei. Tali opere sono indicative dei processi tramite i quali i prodotti culturali rielaborano aspetti problematici del processo di crescita. Lo studio si concentrerà dunque sull'idea di narrazione Young Adult come esempio di collaborazione virtuosa fra testi letterari e adattamenti cinematografici. Nonostante i limiti e le accuse di ripetitività, questi prodotti hanno offerto rappresentazioni complesse dell'identità di genere nella vita di personaggi adolescenti femminili, offrendo riflessioni sulle dinamiche sociali che investono tale identità. Infine, si è cercato di riflettere su come i consumatori, in particolare i fan, possono appropriarsi di questi contenuti narrativi per espanderli in fan fiction, fanart, video, fan film, cosplay, e una serie di altre pratiche partecipative.

La letteratura per ragazzi e il ruolo del traduttore: proposta di traduzione di un romanzo Young Adult

I libri e la letteratura per ragazzi sono fondamentali per la formazione, lo sviluppo e l’arricchimento dell’immaginario dei giovani lettori, costituendo peraltro un mercato in crescita nell’editoria di paesi come l’Italia. In tale quadro, la traduzione svolge un ruolo cruciale nel permettere a bambini, ragazzi, adolescenti e giovani adulti di incontrare l’estraneo e stabilire un contatto con altre culture. Tuttavia, la letteratura giovanile, che nel corso della propria storia si è evoluta fino a divenire l’arte complessa e sofisticata che è oggi, pone chi traduce di fronte a una serie di questioni teoriche, meccanismi editoriali e sfide traduttive che la distinguono dalla letteratura per adulti e sembrano meritare un approfondimento. Inserita in questo contesto, la letteratura Young Adult si rivolge ai lettori che si collocano tra l’infanzia e l’età adulta, cercando di rispondere a necessità e aspettative di un pubblico esigente e di difficile definizione. Se la sua storia, iniziata negli Stati Uniti del dopoguerra, è stata descritta da numerosi studiosi, le specificità della letteratura Young Adult e soprattutto le loro ripercussioni sull’aspetto traduttivo sembrano rappresentare un campo d’indagine per certi versi inesplorato in ambito accademico. Nel presente elaborato si propone dunque la traduzione parziale dall’inglese all’italiano del romanzo storico per giovani adulti The House of One Thousand Eyes, dell’autrice canadese Michelle Barker, nel tentativo di gettare luce non solo sulle caratteristiche specifiche del testo in esame, ma anche sulle questioni traduttive relative alla categoria Young Adult. La proposta di traduzione è accompagnata da un commento che illustra strategie e scelte applicate nel processo traduttivo, ed è preceduta da due capitoli che approfondiscono la storia della letteratura per ragazzi e il ruolo del traduttore letterario che si confronta con essa.
