This work has been conducted in order to determine the solubility and diffusion coefficients of different aromatic substances in two different grades of polylactic acid (PLA), Amorphous (PDLLA) and Crystalline (PLLA); in particular the focus is on the following terpenes: Linalool, α-Pinene, β-Citronellol and L-Linalool. Moreover, further analyses have been carried out with the aim to verify if the use of neat crystalline PLA, (PLLA), a chiral substrate, may lead to an enantioenrichment of absorbed species in order to use it as membrane in enantioselective processes. The other possible applications of PLA, which has aroused interest in carry out the above-mentioned work, concerns its use in food packaging. Therefore, it is interesting and also very important, to evaluate the barrier properties of PLA, focusing in particular on the transport and absorption of terpenes, by the packaging and, hence, by the PLA. PLA films/slabs of one-millimeter thickness and with square shape, were prepared through the Injection Molding process. On the resulting PLA films heat pretreatment processes of normalizing were then performed to enhance the properties of the material. In order to evaluate solubility and diffusion coefficient of the different penetrating species, the absorption kinetics of various terpenes, in the two different types of PLA, were determined by gravimetric methods. Subsequently, the absorbed liquid was extracted with methanol (MeOH), non- solvent for PLA, and the extract analyzed by the use of High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), in order to evaluate its possible enantiomeric excess. Moreover, PLA films used were subjected to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) which allowed to measure the glass transition temperature (Tg) and to determine the degree of crystallinity of the polymer (Xc).

This Thesis work concerns the complementary study of the abundance of galaxy clusters and cosmic voids identified in cosmological simulations, at different redshifts. In particular, we focus our analyses on the combination of the cosmological constraints derived from these probes, which can be considered statistically independent, given the different aspects of Universe density field they map. Indeed, we aim at showing the orthogonality of the derived cosmological constraints and the resulting impressive power of the combination of these probes. To perform this combination we apply three newly implemented algorithms that allow us to combine independent probes. These algorithms represent a flexible and user-friendly tool to perform different techniques for probe combination and are implemented within the environment provided by the large set of free software C++/Python CosmoBolognaLib. All the new implemented codes provide simple and flexible tools that will be soon applied to the data coming from currently available and next-generation wide-field surveys to perform powerful combined cosmological analyses.

The thesis explores recent technology developments in the field of structural health monitoring and its application to railway bridge projects. It focuses on two main topics. First, service loads and effect of environmental actions are modelled. In particular, the train moving load and its interaction with rail track is considered with different degrees of detail. Hence, results are compared with real-time experimental measurements. Secondly, the work concerns the identification, definition and modelling process of damages for a prestressed concrete railway bridge, and their implementation inside FEM models. Along with a critical interpretation of the in-field measurements, this approach results in the development of undamaged and damaged databases for the AI-aided detection of anomalies and the definition of threshold levels to prompt automatic alert interventions. In conclusion, an innovative solution for the development of the railway weight-in-motion system is proposed.
