The present study is based on the use of isotopes for evaluating the efficiency of nutrients removal of a wetland, in particular nitrogen and nitrates, also between the different habitats present in the wetland. Nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, normally distributed as fertilizers, are among the principal causes of diffuse pollution. This is particularly important in the Adriatic Sea, which is frequently subjected to eutrophication phenomena. So it is very crucial requalification of wetland, in which there are naturally depurative processes such as denitrification and plant uptake, which allow the reduction of pollutant loads that flow in water bodies. In this study nutrient reduction is analyzed in the wetland of the Comuna drain, which waters flow in the Venice lagoon. Chemical and isotopical analyses were performed on samples of water, vegetation, soil and sediments taken in the wetlands of the Comuna drain in four different periods of the year and on data of nitrogen and phosphorus concentration obtained by the LASA of the University of Padova. Values of total nitrogen and nitrates were obtained in order to evaluate the reduction within the different systems of the wetland. Instead, the isotopic values of nitrogen and carbon were used to evaluate which process influence more nitrogen reduction and to understand the origin of the nutrient, if it is from fertilizers, waste water or sewage. To conclude, the most important process in the wetland of the Comuna drain is plant uptake, in facts the bigger percentage of nitrogen reduction was in the period of vegetative growth. So it is important the study of isotopes in plant tissues and water residence time, whose increase would allow a greater reduction of nutrients.

The research presented in this dissertation is aimed to the automation of the Fenton process. The Fenton reaction is finalized to the waste water pre-treatment in order to promote the abatement of the organic contaminants and make it more degradable. Reagents adopted are constituted by a mixture of iron ions and hydrogen peroxide and their effect is strictly influenced by several variables, such as: the reagents molar ratio and their quantities counterpoised to the substrate, temperature, pH, agitation, etc. Therefore, the optimization is far from being considered an easy procedure. The research was carried out using a batch configuration, through which the optimal [Fe2+]/[H2O2] and [substrate]/[H2O2] ratios were identified. Then, in order to improve the process, a semibatch configuration was performed. The preliminary results show that is possible to obtain a greater abatement efficiency for high organic burden using the semibatch configuration here proposed.

A new type of pavement has been gaining popularity over the last few years in Europe. It comprises a surface course with a semi-flexible material that provides significant advantages in comparison to both concrete and conventional asphalt, having both rut resistance and a degree of flexibility. It also provides good protection against the ingress of water to the foundation, since it has an impermeable surface. The semi-flexible material, generally known as grouted macadam, comprises an open-graded asphalt skeleton with 25% to 35% voids into which a cementitious slurry is grouted. This hybrid mixture provides good rut resistance and a surface highly resistant to fuel and oil spillage. Such properties allow it to be used in industrial areas, airports and harbours, where those situations are frequently associated with heavy and slow traffic. Grouted Macadams constitute a poorly understood branch of pavement technology and have generally been relegated to a role in certain specialist pavements whose performance is predicted on purely empirical evidence. Therefore, the main objectives of this project were related to better understanding the properties of this type of material, in order to predict its performance more realistically and to design pavements incorporating grouted macadam more accurately. Based on a standard mix design, several variables were studied during this project in order to characterise the behaviour of Grouted Macadams in general, and the influence of those variables on the fundamental properties of the final mixture. In this research project, one approach was used to the design of pavements incorporating Grouted Macadams: a traditional design method, based on laboratory determined of the stiffness modulus and the compressive strength.

Recent studies found that soil-atmosphere coupling features, through soil moisture, have been crucial to simulate well heat waves amplitude, duration and intensity. Moreover, it was found that soil moisture depletion both in Winter and Spring anticipates strong heat waves during the Summer. Irrigation in geophysical studies can be intended as an anthropogenic forcing to the soil-moisture, besides changes in land proprieties. In this study, the irrigation was add to a LAM hydrostatic model (BOLAM) and coupled with the soil. The response of the model to irrigation perturbation is analyzed during a dry Summer season. To identify a dry Summer, with overall positive temperature anomalies, an extensive climatological characterization of 2015 was done. The method included a statistical validation on the reference period distribution used to calculate the anomalies. Drought conditions were observed during Summer 2015 and previous seasons, both on the analyzed region and the Alps. Moreover July was characterized as an extreme event for the referred distribution. The numerical simulation consisted on the summer season of 2015 and two run: a control run (CTR), with the soil coupling and a perturbed run (IPR). The perturbation consists on a mask of land use created from the Cropland FAO dataset, where an irrigation water flux of 3 mm/day was applied from 6 A.M. to 9 A.M. every day. The results show that differences between CTR and IPR has a strong daily cycle. The main modifications are on the air masses proprieties, not on to the dynamics. However, changes in the circulation at the boundaries of the Po Valley are observed, and a diagnostic spatial correlation of variable differences shows that soil moisture perturbation explains well the variation observed in the 2 meters height temperature and in the latent heat fluxes. On the other hand, does not explain the spatial shift up and downslope observed during different periods of the day. Given the results, irrigation process affects the atmospheric proprieties on a larger scale than the irrigation, therefore it is important in daily forecast, particularly during hot and dry periods.
