The research project object of this thesis is focused on the development of an advanced analytical system based on the combination of an improved thin layer chromatography (TLC) plate coupled with infrared (FTIR) and Raman microscopies for the detection of synthetic dyes. Indeed, the characterization of organic colorants, which are commonly present in mixtures with other components and in a very limited amount, still represents a challenging task in scientific analyses of cultural heritage materials. The approach provides selective spectral fingerprints for each compound, foreseeing the complementary information obtained by micro ATR-RAIRS-FTIR and SERS-Raman analyses, which can be performed on the same separated spot. In particular, silver iodide (AgI) applied on a gold coated slide is proposed as an efficient stationary phase for the discrimination of complex analyte mixtures, such as dyes present in samples of art-historical interest. The gold-AgI-TLC plate shows high performances related both to the chromatographic separation of analytes and to the spectroscopic detection of components. The use of a mid-IR transparent inorganic salt as the stationary phase avoids interferences of the background absorption in FTIR investigations. Moreover, by ATR microscopy measurements performed on the gold-AgI surface, a considerable enhancement in the intensity of spectra is observed. Complementary information can be obtained by Raman analyses, foreseeing a SERS activity of the AgI substrate. The method has been tested for the characterization of a mixture of three synthetic organic colorants widely used in dyeing processes: Brilliant Green (BG1), Rhodamine B (BV10) and Methylene Blue (BB9).

The study of dielectric properties concerns storage and dissipation of electric and magnetic energy in materials. Dielectrics are important in order to explain various phenomena in Solid-State Physics and in Physics of Biological Materials. Indeed, during the last two centuries, many scientists have tried to explain and model the dielectric relaxation. Starting from the Kohlrausch model and passing through the ideal Debye one, they arrived at more com- plex models that try to explain the experimentally observed distributions of relaxation times, including the classical (Cole-Cole, Davidson-Cole and Havriliak-Negami) and the more recent ones (Hilfer, Jonscher, Weron, etc.). The purpose of this thesis is to discuss a variety of models carrying out the analysis both in the frequency and in the time domain. Particular attention is devoted to the three classical models, that are studied using a transcendental function known as Mittag-Leffler function. We highlight that one of the most important properties of this function, its complete monotonicity, is an essential property for the physical acceptability and realizability of the models.

Cyanoacetylene HC3N is a molecule of great astronomical importance and it has been observed in many interstellar environments. Its deuterated form DC3N has been detected in number of sources from external galaxies to Galactic interstellar clouds, star-forming regions and planetary atmospheres. All these detections relied on previous laboratory investigations, which however still lack some essential information concerning its infrared spectrum. In this project, high-resolution ro-vibrational spectra of DC3N have been recorded in two energy regions: 150 – 450 cm-1 and 1800 – 2800 cm-1. In the first window the ν7← GS, 2ν7 ← ν7, ν5 ← ν7, ν5+ν7 ← 2ν7, ν6+ν7 → 2v7, 4ν7 ← 2ν7 bands have been assigned, while in the second region the three stretching fundamental bands ν1, ν2, ν3 have been observed and analysed. The 150 – 450 cm-1 region spectra have been recorded at the AILES beamline at the SOLEIL synchrotron (France), the 1800 – 2800 cm-1 spectra at the Department of Industrial Chemistry “Toso Montanari” in Bologna. In total, 2299 transitions have been assigned. Such experimental transition, together with data previously recorded for DC3N, were included in a least-squares fitting procedure from which several spectroscopic parameters have been determined with high precision and accuracy. They include rotational, vibrational and resonance constants. The spectroscopic data of DC3N have been included in a line catalog for this molecule in order to assist future astronomical observations and data interpretation. A paper which includes this research work has been published (M. Melosso, L. Bizzocchi, A. Adamczyk, E. Cane, P. Caselli, L. Colzid, L. Dorea, B. M. Giulianob, J.-C. Guillemine, M-A. Industrial companies, particularly those with induction motors and gearboxes as integral components of their systems, are utilizing Condition Monitoring (CM) systems more frequently in order to discover the need for maintenance in advance, as traditional maintenance only performs tasks when a failure has been identified. Utilizing a CM system is essential to boost productivity and minimize long-term failures that result in financial loss. The more exact and practical the CM system, the better the data analysis, which adds to a more precise maintenance forecast. This thesis project is a cooperation with PEI Vibration Monitoring s.r.l. to design and construct a low-cost vibrational condition monitoring system to check the health of induction motors and gearboxes automatically. Moreover, according to the company's request, such a system should have specs comparable to NI 9234, one of the company's standard Data Acquisition (DAQ) boards, but at a significantly cheaper price. Additionally, PEI VM Company has supplied all hardware and electronic components. The suggested CM system is capable of highprecision autonomous monitoring of induction motors and gearboxes, and it consists of a Raspberry Pi 3B and MCC 172 DAQ board.
