The increase of railways near the urban areas is a significant cause of discomfort for inhabitants due to train-induced vibration and noise. Vibration characteristics can vary widely according to the train type: for high-speed trains, if train speed becomes comparable to the ground wave speed, the vibration level becomes significant; for freight trains, due to their heavier weight and lower speed, the vibration amplitudes are greater and propagate at a more considerable distance from the track; for urban tramways, although the vibration amplitude is relatively low, they can have a negative structural effect on the closest buildings [51]. Therefore, to dampen the vibration level, it is possible to carry out some interventions both on the track and the transmission path. This thesis aims to propose and numerically investigate a novel method to dampen the train-induced vibrations along the transmission path. The method is called "resonant filled-trench (RFT)" and consists of a combination of expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam to stabilize the trench wall against the collapse and drowned cylindrical embedded inclusions inside the geofoam, which act as a resonator, reflector, and attenuator. By means of finite element simulations, we show that up to 50% higher attenuation than the open trench is achievable after overcoming the resonance frequency of the inclusion, i.e., 35Hz, which covers the frequency contents of the train-induced vibration. Moreover, depending on the filling material used for the inclusions, trench depth can be reduced up to 17% compared to the open trench showing the same screening performance as the open trench. Also, an RFT with DS inclusion installed in dense sand soil shows a high hindrance performance (i.e., IL≥6dB) when the trench depth is larger than 0.5λ_R while it is 0.6λ_R for the open trench.

Dans un contexte de communication, des bonnes compétences linguistiques ne suffisent pas puisque la connaissance approfondie de la culture cible s’avère également une question fondamentale. Il est donc nécessaire d’adopter une attitude communicative adéquate pour que le message puisse être reçu correctement. Parmi les aspects culturels auxquels le parlant doit accorder une grande importance figurent les proverbes. Les proverbes sont des énoncés d’origine populaire qui recèlent un contenu moral et éthique dont la visée est apprendre aux hommes à bien vivre en société. Les messages véhiculés par les proverbes sont l’héritage de l’expérience des ancêtres dont il faut faire trésor pour comprendre les mœurs, le mode de vie et la pensée d’une communauté donnée : voilà donc pourquoi les proverbes ont été dénommés «sagesse des nations». Depuis la nuit de temps, les proverbes sont transmis de père en fils par voie orale : l’usage quotidien et l’apprentissage par cœur en ont fait des formules fixées dont la structure binaire rimique et rythmique facilite la mémorisation. Par ailleurs, les proverbes sont souvent à interpréter en clé métaphorique, le figement étant l’un des traits définitoires de ce genre du discours. Si les proverbes, énoncés de sagesse populaire, étaient autrefois des sources d’autorité morale, aujourd’hui, au contraire, ils ont perdu leur valeur éthique et sont en train de tomber en désuétude en tant que forme de littérature de deuxième rang, véhiculant des contenus stéréotypés. Néanmoins, les proverbes représentent toujours une clé de lecture pour étudier les sociétés dont ils constituent une partie très importante du patrimoine linguistique et culturel, ce que l’on nomme « patrimoine immatériel ». Le travail que nous allons proposer se penche sur le rôle et l’importance des proverbes, en présentant une approche à l’analyse contrastive des proverbes concernant la notion de temps en langue italienne et française.

Following the internationalization of contemporary higher education, academic institutions based in non-English speaking countries are increasingly urged to produce contents in English to address international prospective students and personnel, as well as to increase their attractiveness. The demand for English translations in the institutional academic domain is consequently increasing at a rate exceeding the capacity of the translation profession. Resources for assisting non-native authors and translators in the production of appropriate texts in L2 are therefore required in order to help academic institutions and professionals streamline their translation workload. Some of these resources include: (i) parallel corpora to train machine translation systems and multilingual authoring tools; and (ii) translation memories for computer-aided tools. The purpose of this study is to create and evaluate reference resources like the ones mentioned in (i) and (ii) through the automatic sentence alignment of a large set of Italian and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) institutional academic texts given as equivalent but not necessarily parallel (i.e. translated). In this framework, a set of aligning algorithms and alignment tools is examined in order to identify the most profitable one(s) in terms of accuracy and time- and cost-effectiveness. In order to determine the text pairs to align, a sample is selected according to document length similarity (characters) and subsequently evaluated in terms of extent of noisiness/parallelism, alignment accuracy and content leverageability. The results of these analyses serve as the basis for the creation of an aligned bilingual corpus of academic course descriptions, which is eventually used to create a translation memory in TMX format.
