This thesis investigates the synthesis of polymeric ionic liquid [(poly-acryloyloxy)6C6C1im][NTf2], by free radical polymerization of acryloyl imidazolium-base ionic liquid monomer [(acryloyloxy)6C6C1im][NTf2]. Moreover, the smartest synthetic route to obtain this monomer was investigated. Two different synthesis were compared. The first one started from the preparation of the monomer 6-chlorohexyl acrylate followed by substitution and metathesis to reach ionic liquid monomer. The second one started from synthesis of the ionic liquid [(HO)6C6C1im]Cl followed by metathesis and esterification in order to get ionic liquid monomer [(acryloyloxy)6C6C1im][NTf2].

This thesis work is part of a larger synthesis project about alkyd resins from natural sources, copolymerized with methyl acrylate and n-butyl acrylates, which wil be used for coatings purpose. The aim is to control the copolymerization of methyl acrylate and n-butyl acrylate in RAFT miniemulsion. The research was divided into three parts. First the homopolymerization of methyl methacrylate and n-butyl acrylate was studied by varying different parameters such as the amount of surfactant, the amount of initiator, pH, and especially the RAFT agent. Then two macro RAFT agents were synthesized, as suggested by the existing literature. Finally, the two monomers were copolymerized using both the RAFT used for the homopolymerization and those synthesized in the second stage. To verify the obtained control over the polymerization, the synthesized polymers were analyzed by gel permeation chromatography, GPC, thus finding their molecular weight and its polydispersity.

With the development of the embedded application and driving assistance systems, it becomes relevant to develop parallel mechanisms in order to check and to diagnose these new systems. In this thesis we focus our research on one of this type of parallel mechanisms and analytical redundancy for fault diagnosis of an automotive suspension system. We have considered a quarter model car passive suspension model and used a parameter estimation, ARX model, method to detect the fault happening in the damper and spring of system. Moreover, afterward we have deployed a neural network classifier to isolate the faults and identifies where the fault is happening. Then in this regard, the safety measurements and redundancies can take into the effect to prevent failure in the system. It is shown that The ARX estimator could quickly detect the fault online using the vertical acceleration and displacement sensor data which are common sensors in nowadays vehicles. Hence, the clear divergence is the ARX response make it easy to deploy a threshold to give alarm to the intelligent system of vehicle and the neural classifier can quickly show the place of fault occurrence.

In a world where the problem of energy resources, pollution and all aspects related to these issues become more and more dominant, a greater commitment is needed in the search for solutions. The goal of this project is to make a contribution to the research and development of new materials to reduce the environmental impact in some fields. First of all, we tried to synthesize and prepare an isatin-based membrane which has the potential for use in separating industrial gases. Furthermore, ion exchange membranes, specifically hydroxide exchange membranes (HEMs) derived from the same product can be developed for fuel cells (HEMFC) applications. These materials are essential for energy conversion and storage. The most difficult challenge is to guarantee their thermal stability and stability in corrosive environments such as alkali without losing efficiency. In recent years the poly- hydroxyalkylation catalysed with superacids, e.g. TFSA, has become increasingly studied. This reaction is exploited for the synthesis of the compounds of this thesis. After a preliminary optimization of the reaction conditions it was concluded that due to the rigidity and excessive reactivity of the system, it was not possible to obtain the isatin-based membrane to evaluate the gas separation properties. The synthesis of precursor materials for HEMs was successful by using 1-(4-bromobutyl)indoline-2,3-dione (BID) instead of isatin. A characterization of the obtained polymers was carried out using NMR, TGA and DSC analyses, and subsequently the membranes were functionalized with different ammonium-based cations. Unfortunately, this last step was not successful due to the appearance of side reactions. Future studies on the mechanism and kinetics of the reaction solve this obstacle.
