Il presente lavoro di tesi si pone come obiettivo l’individuazione di modelli matematici che possano essere utilizzati per la configurazione di simulatori di volo aerei elettrici dell’aviazione generale. In particolare, sono state trovate in letteratura delle formule da utlizzare per modellare eliche, motori elettrici di varie tipologie e batterie. Per meglio comprendere l’impatto dell’adozione dei motori elettrici sui velivoli dell’aviazione generale sono stati effettuati dei confronti di dati, in cui si è preso come riferimento il motore a combustione interna Continental O-300 montato sui Cessna C172. Successivamente, sono stati implementati i modelli dinamici in Simulink di motori elettrici che potrebbero sostituire il motore a combustione interna sopra citato. Sono, poi, state eseguite alcune comparazioni tra i risultati ottenuti in termini di spinte ottenibili, potenze e autonomie, e numero di giri di rotazione dell’elica per diversi motori elettrici. Per effettuare le simulazioni è stato utilizzato il software Simulink: ambiente in cui sono stati sviluppati modelli dinamici di propulsione sia tradizionale che elettrica. Nella parte conclusiva della tesi, sono riportate alcune considerazioni volte a stimare l'autonomia di un velivolo simile al Cessna C172, in cui si sotituisce il motore a combustione interna con un motore elettrico a parità di peso massimo al decollo e l’andamento di quest'ultimo in funzione dell’autonomia per un velivolo elettrico. I risultati ottenuti da queste ultime simulazioni suggeriscono che la conversione ad elettrico è attualmente critica in quanto la ridotta densità di energia delle batterie porta ad un significativo decadimento dell'autonomia generale.

Constant developments in the field of offshore wind energy have increased the range of water depths at which wind farms are planned to be installed. Therefore, in addition to monopile support structures suitable in shallow waters (up to 30 m), different types of support structures, able to withstand severe sea conditions at the greater water depths, have been developed. For water depths above 30 m, the jacket is one of the preferred support types. Jacket represents a lightweight support structure, which, in combination with complex nature of environmental loads, is prone to highly dynamic behavior. As a consequence, high stresses with great variability in time can be observed in all structural members. The highest concentration of stresses occurs in joints due to their nature (structural discontinuities) and due to the existence of notches along the welds present in the joints. This makes them the weakest elements of the jacket in terms of fatigue. In the numerical modeling of jackets for offshore wind turbines, a reduction of local stresses at the chord-brace joints, and consequently an optimization of the model, can be achieved by implementing joint flexibility in the chord-brace joints. Therefore, in this work, the influence of joint flexibility on the fatigue damage in chord-brace joints of a numerical jacket model, subjected to advanced load simulations, is studied.

In this thesis, we propose a novel approach to model the diffusion of residential PV systems. For this purpose, we use an agent-based model where agents are the families living in the area of interest. The case study is the Emilia-Romagna Regional Energy plan, which aims to increase the produc- tion of electricity from renewable energy. So, we study the microdata from the Survey on Household Income and Wealth (SHIW) provided by Bank of Italy in order to obtain the characteristics of families living in Emilia-Romagna. These data have allowed us to artificial generate families and reproduce the socio-economic aspects of the region. The families generated by means of a software are placed on the virtual world by associating them with the buildings. These buildings are acquired by analysing the vector data of regional buildings made available by the region. Each year, the model determines the level of diffusion by simulating the installed capacity. The adoption behaviour is influenced by social interactions, household’s economic situation, the environmental benefits arising from the adoption and the payback period of the investment.

Hybrid vehicles represent the future for automakers, since they allow to improve the fuel economy and to reduce the pollutant emissions. A key component of the hybrid powertrain is the Energy Storage System, that determines the ability of the vehicle to store and reuse energy. Though electrified Energy Storage Systems (ESS), based on batteries and ultracapacitors, are a proven technology, Alternative Energy Storage Systems (AESS), based on mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic devices, are gaining interest because they give the possibility of realizing low-cost mild-hybrid vehicles. Currently, most literature of design methodologies focuses on electric ESS, which are not suitable for AESS design. In this contest, The Ohio State University has developed an Alternative Energy Storage System design methodology. This work focuses on the development of driving cycle analysis methodology that is a key component of Alternative Energy Storage System design procedure. The proposed methodology is based on a statistical approach to analyzing driving schedules that represent the vehicle typical use. Driving data are broken up into power events sequence, namely traction and braking events, and for each of them, energy-related and dynamic metrics are calculated. By means of a clustering process and statistical synthesis methods, statistically-relevant metrics are determined. These metrics define cycle representative braking events. By using these events as inputs for the Alternative Energy Storage System design methodology, different system designs are obtained. Each of them is characterized by attributes, namely system volume and weight. In the last part the work, the designs are evaluated in simulation by introducing and calculating a metric related to the energy conversion efficiency. Finally, the designs are compared accounting for attributes and efficiency values. In order to automate the driving data extraction and synthesis process, a specific script Matlab based has been developed. Results show that the driving cycle analysis methodology, based on the statistical approach, allows to extract and synthesize cycle representative data. The designs based on cycle statistically-relevant metrics are properly sized and have satisfying efficiency values with respect to the expectations. An exception is the design based on the cycle worst-case scenario, corresponding to same approach adopted by the conventional electric ESS design methodologies. In this case, a heavy system with poor efficiency is produced. The proposed new methodology seems to be a valid and consistent support for Alternative Energy Storage System design.

This research work presents the design and implementation of a FFT pruning block, which is an extension to the FFT core for OFDM demodulation, enabling run-time 8 pruning of the FFT algorithm, without any restrictions on the distribution pattern of the active/inactive sub-carriers. The design and implementation of FFT processor core is not the part of this work. The whole design was prototyped on an ALTERA STRATIX V FPGA to evaluate the performance of the pruning engine. Synthesis and simulation results showed that the logic overhead introduced by the pruning block is limited to a 10% of the total resources utilization. Moreover, in presence of a medium-high scattering of the sub-carriers, power and energy consumption of the FFT core were reduced by a 30% factor.

Data Distribution Management (DDM) is a core part of High Level Architecture standard, as its goal is to optimize the resources used by simulation environments to exchange data. It has to filter and match the set of information generated during a simulation, so that each federate, that is a simulation entity, only receives the information it needs. It is important that this is done quickly and to the best in order to get better performances and avoiding the transmission of irrelevant data, otherwise network resources may saturate quickly. The main topic of this thesis is the implementation of a super partes DDM testbed. It evaluates the goodness of DDM approaches, of all kinds. In fact it supports both region and grid based approaches, and it may support other different methods still unknown too. It uses three factors to rank them: execution time, memory and distance from the optimal solution. A prearranged set of instances is already available, but we also allow the creation of instances with user-provided parameters. This is how this thesis is structured. We start introducing what DDM and HLA are and what do they do in details. Then in the first chapter we describe the state of the art, providing an overview of the most well known resolution approaches and the pseudocode of the most interesting ones. The third chapter describes how the testbed we implemented is structured. In the fourth chapter we expose and compare the results we got from the execution of four approaches we have implemented. The rapid development in the field of lighting and illumination allows low energy consumption and a rapid growth in the use, and development of solid-state sources. As the efficiency of these devices increases and their cost decreases there are predictions that they will become the dominant source for general illumination in the short term. The objective of this thesis is to study, through extensive simulations in realistic scenarios, the feasibility and exploitation of visible light communication (VLC) for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) applications. A brief introduction will introduce the new scenario of smart cities in which visible light communication will become a fundamental enabling technology for the future communication systems. Specifically, this thesis focus on the acquisition of several, frequent, and small data packets from vehicles, exploited as sensors of the environment. The use of vehicles as sensors is a new paradigm to enable an efficient environment monitoring and an improved traffic management. In most cases, the sensed information must be collected at a remote control centre and one of the most challenging aspects is the uplink acquisition of data from vehicles. My thesis discusses the opportunity to take advantage of short range vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-roadside (V2R) communications to offload the cellular networks. More specifically, it discusses the system design and assesses the obtainable cellular resource saving, by considering the impact of the percentage of vehicles equipped with short range communication devices, of the number of deployed road side units, and of the adopted routing protocol. When short range communications are concerned, WAVE/IEEE 802.11p is considered as standard for VANETs. Its use together with VLC will be considered in urban vehicular scenarios to let vehicles communicate without involving the cellular network. The study is conducted by simulation, considering both a simulation platform (SHINE, simulation platform for heterogeneous interworking networks) developed within the Wireless communication Laboratory (Wilab) of the University of Bologna and CNR, and network simulator (NS3). trying to realistically represent all the wireless network communication aspects. Specifically, simulation of vehicular system was performed and introduced in ns-3, creating a new module for the simulator. This module will help to study VLC applications in VANETs. Final observations would enhance and encourage potential research in the area and optimize performance of VLC systems applications in the future.

Globalization has increased the pressure on organizations and companies to operate in the most efficient and economic way. This tendency promotes that companies concentrate more and more on their core businesses, outsource less profitable departments and services to reduce costs. By contrast to earlier times, companies are highly specialized and have a low real net output ratio. For being able to provide the consumers with the right products, those companies have to collaborate with other suppliers and form large supply chains. An effect of large supply chains is the deficiency of high stocks and stockholding costs. This fact has lead to the rapid spread of Just-in-Time logistic concepts aimed minimizing stock by simultaneous high availability of products. Those concurring goals, minimizing stock by simultaneous high product availability, claim for high availability of the production systems in the way that an incoming order can immediately processed. Besides of design aspects and the quality of the production system, maintenance has a strong impact on production system availability. In the last decades, there has been many attempts to create maintenance models for availability optimization. Most of them concentrated on the availability aspect only without incorporating further aspects as logistics and profitability of the overall system. However, production system operator’s main intention is to optimize the profitability of the production system and not the availability of the production system. Thus, classic models, limited to represent and optimize maintenance strategies under the light of availability, fail. A novel approach, incorporating all financial impacting processes of and around a production system, is needed. The proposed model is subdivided into three parts, maintenance module, production module and connection module. This subdivision provides easy maintainability and simple extendability. Within those modules, all aspect of production process are modeled. Main part of the work lies in the extended maintenance and failure module that offers a representation of different maintenance strategies but also incorporates the effect of over-maintaining and failed maintenance (maintenance induced failures). Order release and seizing of the production system are modeled in the production part. Due to computational power limitation, it was not possible to run the simulation and the optimization with the fully developed production model. Thus, the production model was reduced to a black-box without higher degree of details.

L’azoto è uno dei prodotti principali dell’industria chimica, utilizzato principalmente per assicurare un sicuro stoccaggio di composti infiammabili. Generatori con sistemi PSA sono spesso più economici della tradizionale distillazione criogenica. I processi PSA utilizzano una colonna a letto fisso, riempita con materiale adsorbente, che adsorbe selettivamente un componente da una miscela gassosa. L’ossigeno diffonde molto più velocemente dell'azoto nei pori di setacci molecolari carboniosi. Oltre ad un ottimo materiale adsorbente, anche il design è fondamentale per la performance di un processo PSA. La fase di adsorbimento è seguita da una fase di desorbimento. Il materiale adsorbente può essere quindi riutilizzato nel ciclo seguente. L’assenza di un simulatore di processo ha reso necessario l’uso di dati sperimentali per sviluppare nuovi processi. Un tale approccio è molto costoso e lungo. Una modellazione e simulazione matematica, che consideri tutti i fenomeni di trasporto, è richiesta per una migliore comprensione dell'adsorbente sia per l'ottimizzazione del processo. La dinamica della colonna richiede la soluzione di insiemi di PDE distribuite nel tempo e nello spazio. Questo lavoro è stato svolto presso l'Università di Scienze Applicate - Münster, Germania. Argomento di questa tesi è la modellazione e simulazione di un impianto PSA per la produzione di azoto con il simulatore di processo Aspen Adsorption con l’obiettivo di permettere in futuro ottimizzazioni di processo affidabili, attendibili ed economiche basate su computazioni numeriche. E' discussa l’ottimizzazione di parametri, dati cinetici, termodinamici e di equilibrio. Il modello è affidabile, rigoroso e risponde adeguatamente a diverse condizioni al contorno. Tuttavia non è ancora pienamente soddisfacente poiché manca una rappresentazione adeguata della cinetica ovvero dei fenomeni di trasporto di materia. La messa a punto del software permetterà in futuro di indagare velocemente nuove possibilità di operazione.

In the last years, the European countries have paid increasing attention to renewable sources and greenhouse emissions. The Council of the European Union and the European Parliament have established ambitious targets for the next years. In this scenario, biomass plays a prominent role since its life cycle produces a zero net carbon dioxide emission. Additionally, biomass can ensure plant operation continuity thanks to its availability and storage ability. Several conventional systems running on biomass are available at the moment. Most of them are performant either in the large-scale or in the small power range. The absence of an efficient system on the small-middle scale inspired this thesis project. The object is an innovative plant based on a wet indirectly fired gas turbine (WIFGT) integrated with an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) unit for combined heat and power production. The WIFGT is a performant system in the small-middle power range; the ORC cycle is capable of giving value to low-temperature heat sources. Their integration is investigated in this thesis with the aim of carrying out a preliminary design of the components. The targeted plant output is around 200 kW in order not to need a wide cultivation area and to avoid biomass shipping. Existing in-house simulation tools are used: They are adapted to this purpose. Firstly the WIFGT + ORC model is built; Zero-dimensional models of heat exchangers, compressor, turbines, furnace, dryer and pump are used. Different fluids are selected but toluene and benzene turn out to be the most suitable. In the indirectly fired gas turbine a pressure ratio around 4 leads to the highest efficiency. From the thermodynamic analysis the system shows an electric efficiency of 38%, outdoing other conventional plants in the same power range. The combined plant is designed to recover thermal energy: Water is used as coolant in the condenser. It is heated from 60°C up to 90°C, ensuring the possibility of space heating. Mono-dimensional models are used to design the heat exchange equipment. Different types of heat exchangers are chosen depending on the working temperature. A finned-plate heat exchanger is selected for the WIFGT heat transfer equipment due to the high temperature, oxidizing and corrosive environment. A once-through boiler with finned tubes is chosen to vaporize the organic fluid in the ORC. A plate heat exchanger is chosen for the condenser and recuperator. A quasi-monodimensional model for single-stage axial turbine is implemented to design both the WIFGT and the ORC turbine. The system simulation after the components design shows an electric efficiency around 34% with a decrease by 10% compared to the zero-dimensional analysis. The work exhibits the system potentiality compared to the existing plants from both technical and economic point of view.

La simulazione è definita come la rappresentazione del comportamento di un sistema o di un processo per mezzo del funzionamento di un altro o, alternativamente, dall'etimologia del verbo “simulare”, come la riproduzione di qualcosa di fittizio, irreale, come se in realtà, lo fosse. La simulazione ci permette di modellare la realtà ed esplorare soluzioni differenti e valutare sistemi che non possono essere realizzati per varie ragioni e, inoltre, effettuare differenti valutazioni, dinamiche per quanto concerne la variabilità delle condizioni. I modelli di simulazione possono raggiungere un grado di espressività estremamente elevato, difficilmente un solo calcolatore potrà soddisfare in tempi accettabili i risultati attesi. Una possibile soluzione, viste le tendenze tecnologiche dei nostri giorni, è incrementare la capacità computazionale tramite un’architettura distribuita (sfruttando, ad esempio, le possibilità offerte dal cloud computing). Questa tesi si concentrerà su questo ambito, correlandolo ad un altro argomento che sta guadagnando, giorno dopo giorno, sempre più rilevanza: l’anonimato online. I recenti fatti di cronaca hanno dimostrato quanto una rete pubblica, intrinsecamente insicura come l’attuale Internet, non sia adatta a mantenere il rispetto di confidenzialità, integrità ed, in alcuni, disponibilità degli asset da noi utilizzati: nell’ambito della distribuzione di risorse computazionali interagenti tra loro, non possiamo ignorare i concreti e molteplici rischi; in alcuni sensibili contesti di simulazione (e.g., simulazione militare, ricerca scientifica, etc.) non possiamo permetterci la diffusione non controllata dei nostri dati o, ancor peggio, la possibilità di subire un attacco alla disponibilità delle risorse coinvolte. Essere anonimi implica un aspetto estremamente rilevante: essere meno attaccabili, in quanto non identificabili.

The main goal of this thesis is to report patterns of perceived safety in the context of airport infrastructure, taking the airport of Bologna as reference. Many personal and environmental attributes are investigated to paint the profile of the sensitive passenger and to understand why precise factors of the transit environment are so impactful on the individual. The main analyses are based on a 2014-2015 passengers’ survey, involving almost six thousand of incoming and outgoing passengers. Other reports are used to implement and support the resource. The analysis is carried out by using a combination of Chi-square tests and binary logistic regressions. Findings shows that passengers result to be particularly affected by the perception of airport’s environment (e.g., state and maintenance of facilities, clarity and efficacy of information system, functionality of elevators and escalators), but also by the way how the passenger reaches the airport and the quality of security checks. In relation to such results, several suggestions are provided for the improvement of passenger satisfaction with safety. The attention is then focused on security checkpoints and related operations, described on a theoretical and technical ground. We present an example of how to realize a proper model of the security checks area of Bologna’s airport, with the aim to assess present performances of the system and consequences of potential variations. After a brief introduction to Arena, a widespread simulation software, the existing model is described, pointing out flaws and limitations. Such model is finally updated and changed in order to make it more reliable and more representative of the reality. Different scenarios are tested and results are compared using graphs and tables.

La tesi approccia in modo transdisciplinare biologia, architettura e robotica, con la finalità di indagare e applicare principi costruttivi attraverso l’interazione tra sciami di droni che depositano materiale fibroso su strutture gonfiabili di supporto. L’attenzione principale è nello sviluppo (attraverso un workflow computazionale che gestisce sciami di agenti costruttori) di una tettonica che integra struttura, spazio e ornamento all’interno dello stesso processo progettuale, il quale si sviluppa coerentemente dall’ideazione fino alla fabbricazione. Sono stati studiati modelli biologici quali le colonie di ragni sociali, i quali costruiscono artefatti di grandi dimensioni relativamente a quelle del singolo individuo grazie ad un’organizzazione coordinata ed emergente e alle proprietà dei sistemi fibrosi. L’auto-organizzazione e la decentralizzazione, insieme alle caratteristiche del sistema materiale, sono stati elementi indispensabili nell’estrapolazione prima e nella codificazione poi di un insieme di regole adatte allo sviluppo del sistema costruttivo. Parallelamente alla simulazione digitale si è andati a sviluppare anche un processo fisico di fabbricazione che, pur tenendo conto dei vincoli economici e tecnici, potesse dimostrarsi una prova di concetto e fattibilità del sistema costruttivo. Sono state investigate le possibilità che un drone offre nel campo della fabbricazione architettonica mediante il rilascio di fili su elementi gonfiabili in pressione. Il processo può risultare vantaggioso in scenari in cui non è possibile allestire infrastrutture costruttive tradizionali (es. gole alpine, foreste). Tendendo conto dei vincoli e delle caratteristiche del sistema di fabbricazione proposto, sono state esplorate potenzialità e criticità del sistema studiato.

This thesis focuses on the investigation and the implementation of different observers for the estimation of the roll angle of a motorbike. The central core of the activity is applying a Model-Based design in order to outline, simulate and implement the filters with the aim of a final comparison of the performances. This approach is crucially underlined among the chapters that articulate this document: first the design and tuning of an Extended Kalman Filter and a Complementary Filter in a pure simulation environment emphasize the most accurate choice for the particular problem. After this, several steps were performed in order to move from the aforementioned simulation environment to a real hardware application. In conclusion, several sensor configurations were tested and compared in order to highlight which sensor suite gives the best performances.

This thesis describes a study conducted for the development of a new approach for the design of compliant mechanisms. Currently compliant mechanisms are based on a 2.5D design method. The applications for which compliant mechanisms can be used this way, is limited. The proposed research suggests to use a 3D approach for the design of CM’s, to better exploit its useful properties. To test the viability of this method, a practical application was chosen. The selected application is related to morphing wings. During this project a working prototype of a variable sweep and variable AoA system was designed and made for an SUAV. A compliant hinge allows the system to achieve two DOF. This hinge has been designed using the proposed 3D design approach. To validate the capabilities of the design, two methods were used. One of these methods was by simulation. By using analysis software, a basic idea could be provided of the stress and deformation of the designed mechanism. The second validation was done by means of AM. Using FDM and material jetting technologies, several prototypes were manufactured. The result of the first model showed that the DOF could be achieved. Models manufactured using material jetting technology, proved that the designed model could provide the desired motion and exploit the positive characteristics of CM. The system could be manufactured successfully in one part. Being able to produce the system in one part makes the need for an extensive assembly process redundant. This improves its structural quality. The materials chosen for the prototypes were PLA, VeroGray and Rigur. The material properties were suboptimal for its final purpose, but successful results were obtained. The prototypes proved tough and were able to provide the desired motion. This proves that the proposed design method can be a useful tool for the design of improved CM’s. Furthermore, the variable sweep & AoA system could be used to boost the flight performance of SUAV’s.
