This project points out a brief overview of several concepts, as Renewable Energy Resources, Distributed Energy Resources, Distributed Generation, and describes the general architecture of an electrical microgrid, isolated or connected to the Medium Voltage Network. Moreover, the project focuses on a project carried out by GRECDH Department in collaboration with CITCEA Department, both belonging to Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya: it concerns isolated microgrids employing renewable energy resources in two communities in northern Peru. Several solutions found using optimization software regarding different generation systems (wind and photovoltaic) and different energy demand scenarios are commented and analyzed from an electrical point of view. Furthermore, there are some proposals to improve microgrid performances, in particular to increase voltage values for each load connected to the microgrid. The extra costs required by the proposed solutions are calculated and their effect on the total microgrid cost are taken into account; finally there are some considerations about the impact the project has on population and on people's daily life.

Hydrothermal vents are often compared to desert oases, because of the presence of highly diverse and abundant biotic communities inhabiting these extreme environments. Nevertheless, the microbial communities associated with shallow-hydrothermal systems have been poorly studied. Hydrothermal activity at Dominica Island is quite well known under the geological and geochemical aspects, but no previous information existed about the microbial communities associated to this area. This thesis is therefore targeting the microbiology of hydrothermal sediments combining geochemical and molecular biological investigations, focusing on differences between hydrothermal vents and background (i.e. control) areas, and between hydrothermal sites. It was also intended to assess relationship between geochemical parameters and microbial diversity at the two hydrothermally impacted sites. Two shallow-sea hydrothermal vents located south-west off Dominica Island (Lesser Antilles) have been investigated in this study: Champagne Hot Springs and Soufriere Bay offshore vent. During this study, sediments for geochemical and molecular analyses were collected every 2 cm from the two impacted areas and from two control sites not associated with hydrothermal activity; in situ temperatures measurements were also taken every 5 cm deep in the sediment for all the sites. A geochemical characterization of the sediment porewater was performed through the analysis of several elements’ concentrations (i.e. H2S, Cl-, Br-, SO42-, Fe2+, Na+, K+, B+, Si+). Microbial communities at the different sites were studied by Automated Intergenic Spacer Analysis (ARISA). Inspection of the operational taxonomic units (OTUs) distribution was performed, as well as statistical analyses for communities’ structure and composition differences, and for changes of β-diversity along with sediment geochemistry. Data suggested that mixing between hydrothermal fluids and seawater results in distinct different environmental gradients and potential ecological niches between the two investigated hydrothermal vents, reflecting a difference in microbial community structures between them.

Human activities strongly influence environmental processes, and while human domination increases, biodiversity progressively declines in ecosystems worldwide. High genetic and phenotypic variability ensures functionality and stability of ecosystem processes through time and increases the resilience and the adaptive capacity of populations and communities, while a reduction in functional diversity leads to a decrease in the ability to respond in a changing environment. Pollution is becoming one of the major threats in aquatic ecosystem, and pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in particular are a relatively new group of environmental contaminants suspected to have adverse effects on aquatic organisms. There is still a lake of knowledge on the responses of communities to complex chemical mixtures in the environment. We used an individual-trait-based approach to assess the response of a phytoplankton community in a scenario of combined pollution and environmental change (steady increasing in temperature). We manipulated individual-level trait diversity directly (by filtering out size classes) and indirectly (through exposure to PPCPs mixture), and studied how reduction in trait-diversity affected community structure, production of biomass and the ability of the community to track a changing environment. We found that exposure to PPCPs slows down the ability of the community to respond to an increasing temperature. Our study also highlights how physiological responses (induced by PPCPs exposure) are important for ecosystem processes: although from an ecological point of view experimental communities converged to a similar structure, they were functionally different.

Nowadays, modern society is gradually becoming multicultural. However, only in the last few years awareness on its importance has been raised. In the case of Colombia, multiculturalism has existed since the pre-Columbian period and today there are more than 80 ethnic groups and 65 indigenous languages in the country. The aim of this work is to illustrate the status of indigenous languages in Colombia and to enlighten about the importance of recognizing, protecting and strengthening the use of these native languages. Subsequent to this, it will be point out that linguistic diversity should be considered a resource and not a barrier to achieve unity in diversity. Finally, ethno-education will be presented as an adequate educational program that may guarantee an equal linguistic representation in the country.
