RTLS and RFID systems are becoming more and more important in several fields. When these systems meet the UWB technology, they can take advantage of each other strengths. Since nowadays a strong importance is given to the "green" technology, we chose to adopt a passive solution. In this case the backscattering modulation can be used to carry data. Therefore it is necessary to analyze the behavior of the antennas used as tags, when they are closed to dierent material objects. In particular, the antenna mode part has been deeply observed, as it is the crucial part of the signal regarding the backscatter modulation.

The last decade has witnessed the establishment of a Standard Cosmological Model, which is based on two fundamental assumptions: the first one is the existence of a new non relativistic kind of particles, i. e. the Dark Matter (DM) that provides the potential wells in which structures create, while the second one is presence of the Dark Energy (DE), the simplest form of which is represented by the Cosmological Constant Λ, that sources the acceleration in the expansion of our Universe. These two features are summarized by the acronym ΛCDM, which is an abbreviation used to refer to the present Standard Cosmological Model. Although the Standard Cosmological Model shows a remarkably successful agreement with most of the available observations, it presents some longstanding unsolved problems. A possible way to solve these problems is represented by the introduction of a dynamical Dark Energy, in the form of the scalar field ϕ. In the coupled DE models, the scalar field ϕ features a direct interaction with matter in different regimes. Cosmic voids are large under-dense regions in the Universe devoided of matter. Being nearby empty of matter their dynamics is supposed to be dominated by DE, to the nature of which the properties of cosmic voids should be very sensitive. This thesis work is devoted to the statistical and geometrical analysis of cosmic voids in large N-body simulations of structure formation in the context of alternative competing cosmological models. In particular we used the ZOBOV code (see ref. Neyrinck 2008), a publicly available void finder algorithm, to identify voids in the Halos catalogues extraxted from CoDECS simulations (see ref. Baldi 2012 ). The CoDECS are the largest N-body simulations to date of interacting Dark Energy (DE) models. We identify suitable criteria to produce voids catalogues with the aim of comparing the properties of these objects in interacting DE scenarios to the standard ΛCDM model, at different redshifts. This thesis work is organized as follows: in chapter 1, the Standard Cosmological Model as well as the main properties of cosmic voids are intro- duced. In chapter 2, we will present the scalar field scenario. In chapter 3 the tools, the methods and the criteria by which a voids catalogue is created are described while in chapter 4 we discuss the statistical properties of cosmic voids included in our catalogues. In chapter 5 the geometrical properties of the catalogued cosmic voids are presented by means of their stacked profiles. In chapter 6 we summarized our results and we propose further developments of this work.

Generic object recognition is an important function of the human visual system and everybody finds it highly useful in their everyday life. For an artificial vision system it is a really hard, complex and challenging task because instances of the same object category can generate very different images, depending of different variables such as illumination conditions, the pose of an object, the viewpoint of the camera, partial occlusions, and unrelated background clutter. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a system that is able to classify objects in 2D images based on the context, and identify to which category the object belongs to. Given an image, the system can classify it and decide the correct categorie of the object. Furthermore the objective of this thesis is also to test the performance and the precision of different supervised Machine Learning algorithms in this specific task of object image categorization. Through different experiments the implemented application reveals good categorization performances despite the difficulty of the problem. However this project is open to future improvement; it is possible to implement new algorithms that has not been invented yet or using other techniques to extract features to make the system more reliable. This application can be installed inside an embedded system and after trained (performed outside the system), so it can become able to classify objects in a real-time. The information given from a 3D stereocamera, developed inside the department of Computer Engineering of the University of Bologna, can be used to improve the accuracy of the classification task. The idea is to segment a single object in a scene using the depth given from a stereocamera and in this way make the classification more accurate.

This essay analyzes the story and the culture of Italian American women, in particular how they are treated in the novel "Umbertina" by Helen Barolini. The essay first introduces briefly the causes of the great migration and the conditions of immigrants in the US. Then the focus moves on the analysis of the main themes that belong to the genre of Italian American literature. After having shortly treated the biography of Helen Barolini and a general presentation of her novel Umbertina, the essay goes on with the description of its three Italian American female characters and, in particular, of what it meant to be both immigrants and women, together with all the interior and generational conflicts they had to face in order to accept their new hybrid identity. An analysis of some meaningful metaphorical objects in the novel, such as the tin heart and the bedspread, the metaphor of Persephone and of the threshold conclude the essay. Through the analysis of the story of Umbertina, this essay wants to show how migration can lead to a displacement and the kind of journey people had to undertake in order to overcome the conflicts deriving from their belonging to an in-between culture and to accept their hybrid identity.

In this thesis we dealt with the problem of describing a transportation network in which the objects in movement were subject to both finite transportation capacity and finite accomodation capacity. The movements across such a system are realistically of a simultaneous nature which poses some challenges when formulating a mathematical description. We tried to derive such a general modellization from one posed on a simplified problem based on asyncronicity in particle transitions. We did so considering one-step processes based on the assumption that the system could be describable through discrete time Markov processes with finite state space. After describing the pre-established dynamics in terms of master equations we determined stationary states for the considered processes. Numerical simulations then led to the conclusion that a general system naturally evolves toward a congestion state when its particle transition simultaneously and we consider one single constraint in the form of network node capacity. Moreover the congested nodes of a system tend to be located in adjacent spots in the network, thus forming local clusters of congested nodes.
