In this work, integro-differential reaction-diffusion models are presented for the description of the temporal and spatial evolution of the concentrations of Abeta and tau proteins involved in Alzheimer's disease. Initially, a local model is analysed: this is obtained by coupling with an interaction term two heterodimer models, modified by adding diffusion and Holling functional terms of the second type. We then move on to the presentation of three nonlocal models, which differ according to the type of the growth (exponential, logistic or Gompertzian) considered for healthy proteins. In these models integral terms are introduced to consider the interaction between proteins that are located at different spatial points possibly far apart. For each of the models introduced, the determination of equilibrium points with their stability and a study of the clearance inequalities are carried out. In addition, since the integrals introduced imply a spatial nonlocality in the models exhibited, some general features of nonlocal models are presented. Afterwards, with the aim of developing simulations, it is decided to transfer the nonlocal models to a brain graph called connectome. Therefore, after setting out the construction of such a graph, we move on to the description of Laplacian and convolution operations on a graph. Taking advantage of all these elements, we finally move on to the translation of the continuous models described above into discrete models on the connectome. To conclude, the results of some simulations concerning the discrete models just derived are presented.

Marine litter and plastics are a significant and growing marine contaminant that has become a global problem. Macrolitter is subject to fragmentation and degradation due to physical, chemical and biological processes, leading to the formation of micro-litter, the so-called microplastics. The purpose of this research is to assess marine litter pollution by using remote sensing tools to identify areas of macrolitter accumulation and to evaluate the concentrations of microplastics in different environmental matrices: water, sediment and biota (i.e. mussels and fish) and to contribute to the European project MAELSTROM (Smart technology for MArinE Litter SusTainable RemOval and Management). The aim is to monitor the presence of macro- and microlitter at two sites of the Venice coastal area: an abandoned mussel farm at sea and a lagoon site near the artificial Island of Sacca Fisola; The results showed that both study areas are characterised by high amounts of marine litter, but the type of observed litter is different. In fact, in the mussel farm area, most of the litter is linked to aquaculture activities (ropes, nets, mooring blocks and floating buoys). In the Venice lagoon site, the litter comes more from urban activities and from the city of Venice (car tyres, crates, wrecks, etc.). Microplastics is present in both sites and in all the analysed matrices. Generally, higher microplastics concentrations were found at Sacca Fisola (i.e., in surface waters, mussels and fish). Moreover, some differences were also observed in shapes and colours comparing the two sites. At Sacca Fisola, white irregular fragments predominate in water samples, blue filaments in sediment and mussels, and transparent irregular fragments in fish. At the Mussel Farm, blue filaments predominate in water, sediment and mussels, while flat black fragments predominate in fish. These differences are related to the different types of macrolitter that characterised the two areas.

The association of several favorable factors has resulted in the development of a wide barchan dune field that stands out as a fundamental element in the coastal landscape of southern Santa Catarina state in Brazil. This original ecosystem is being destroyed and highly modified, due to urbanization. This work identifies and discusses its basic characteristics and analyzes the favorable factors for its preservation, in the foreseen of both a sustainable future and potential incomes from ecotourism. The knowledge of the geologic evolution allows to associate this transgressive Holocene dunes formation to more dissipative beach conditions. Spatial differences on morphodynamics are related to local and regional contrasts in the sediment budget, with an influence on gradients of wave attenuation in the inner shelf and consequently with influence in the level of coastal erosion. The link between relative sea level changes and coastal eolian sedimentation can be used to integrate coastal eolian systems to the sequence stratigraphy model. The main accumulation phase of eolian sediments would occur during the final transgressive and highstand systems tracts. Considering the global character of Quaternary relative sea level changes, the Laguna transgressive dune field should be correlated with similar eolian deposits developed along other parts of the Brazilian coast compatibles with the model of dunefield initiation during rising and highstand sea level phases.

This work describes the synthesis of a propargylcarbamate-functionalized isophthalate ligand and its use in the solvothermal preparation of a new copper(II)-based metal organic framework named [Cu(1,3-YBDC)]ˑxH2O (also abbreviated as Cu-MOF. The characterization of this compound was performed using several complementary techniques such as infrared (ATR-FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction spectroscopy (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) as well as thermal and surface area measurements. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that this MOF contains a complex network of 5-substituted isophthalate anions bound to Cu(II) centers, arranged in pairs within paddlewheel (or “Chinese lantern”) structure with a short Cu…Cu distance of 2.633 Å. Quite unexpectedly, the apical atom in the paddlewheel structure belongs to the carbamate carbonyl oxygen atom. Such extra coordination by the propargylcarbamate groups drastically reduces the MOF porosity, a feature that was also confirmed by BET measurements. Indeed, its surface area was determined to be low (14.5 ± 0.8 m2/g) as its total pore volume (46 mm3/g). Successively the Cu-MOF was treated with HAuCl4 with the aim of studying the ability of the propargylcarbamate functionality to capture the Au(III) ion and reduce it to Au(0) to give gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The overall amount of gold retained by the Cu-MOF/Au was determined by AAS while the amount of gold and its oxidation state on the surface of the MOF was studied by XPS. A glassy carbon (GC) electrode was drop-casted with a Cu-MOF suspension to electrochemically characterize the material through cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The performance of the modified electrodes towards nitrite oxidation was tested by CV and chronoamperometry.

Reinforcement Learning is an increasingly popular area of Artificial Intelligence. The applications of this learning paradigm are many, but its application in mobile computing is in its infancy. This study aims to provide an overview of current Reinforcement Learning applications on mobile devices, as well as to introduce a new framework for iOS devices: Swift-RL Lib. This new Swift package allows developers to easily support and integrate two of the most common RL algorithms, Q-Learning and Deep Q-Network, in a fully customizable environment. All processes are performed on the device, without any need for remote computation. The framework was tested in different settings and evaluated through several use cases. Through an in-depth performance analysis, we show that the platform provides effective and efficient support for Reinforcement Learning for mobile applications.

This thesis describes a project of terminology and localization focused on local and traditional cuisine from the province of Modena: the final products of this project are a specialized termbase and the localized version of the website of Trattoria Ermes, a small Modenese restaurant offering traditional dishes. It is a known fact the Internet has drastically altered the way companies and businesses communicate with their audience. Considering that food tourism is an invaluable sector of Italy’s economy and a great aid to safeguarding its culinary traditions, business owners can benefit from localizing their websites, allowing them to reach wider international audiences. The project is divided into two main sections: the first focuses on the terminological systematization of specialized terminology collected from Sandro Bellei’s cooking book and two web-derived monolingual corpora, while the second section offers insight into the analysis of the localization and optimization process of Trattoria Ermes website. In particular, the thesis approaches localization from the point of view of web marketing, with a theoretical and practical section dedicated to the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) processes employed by web marketing teams to ensure the visibility and popularity of the website

The need for data collection from sensors dispersed in the environment is an increasingly important problem in the sector of telecommunications. LoRaWAN is one of the most popular protocols for low-power wide-area networks (LPWAN) that is made to solve the aforementioned problem. The aim of this study is to test the behavior of the LoRaWAN protocol when the gateway that collects data is implemented on a flying platform or, more specifically, a drone. This will be pursued using performance data in terms of access to the channel of the sensor nodes connected to the flying gateway. The trajectory of the aircraft is precomputed using a given algorithm and sensor nodes’ clusterization. The expected results are as follows: simulate the LoraWAN system behavior including the trajectory of the drone and the deployment of nodes; compare and discuss the effectiveness of the LoRaWAN simulator by conducting on-field trials, where the trajectory design and the nodes’ deployment are the same.

With the development of the economy and society, air pollution has posed a huge threat to public health around the world, especially to people who live in urban areas. Typically, urban development patterns can be roughly divided into compact cities and urban sprawl. In recent years, the relationship between urban form and air quality (especially PM2.5) is gaining more and more attention from urban planners, environmentalists, and governments. This study is focusing on The New York metropolitan area and Shanghai city, which are both megacities but with different urban spatial forms. For both study areas, there are five main variables to measure the urban form metrics, naming Population Density, Artificial Land Area Per Ten Thousand People, Road Density, Green Land Area Ratio and Artificial Land Area Ratio. In addition, considering the impact of economic activities and public transportation, GDP per capita, Number of bus stop and Number of subway station are used as control variables. Based on the results of regression, a megacity like the New York metropolitan area with urban sprawl shows a low spatial correlation on PM2.5 concentration. Meanwhile, almost all the spatial form indicators effect on PM2.5 concentration is not significant. However, a compact megacity like Shanghai shows a diametrically opposite result. Urban form, especially population density, has a strong relationship with PM2.5 concentration. It can be predicted that a reduction in population density would lead to significant improvements on decrease the PM2.5 concentration in Shanghai. Meanwhile, increasing the ratio of green land and construction area per capita will get a positive influence on reducing PM2.5 concentration as well. Road density is not a significant factor for a megacity in both two urban forms. The way and type of energy used by vehicles on megacities maybe more critical.
