The Legacy of Lolita: A Literary Genre of Pedophilia?

This thesis analyzes four works of fiction that portray a pedophilic relationship in order to establish whether we can identify what might be called a genre of pedophilia in literature. In the last decade, books about the topic have been published with great success, so it would seem that there is a need to classify and define the genre of pedophilia. To answer the question I started with the novel Lolita (1955), by Vladimir Nabokov, which is the most famous work of literary fiction on the topic of pedophilia. In my analysis of this text, I tried to show how this novel has laid the ground plan, as it were, for the genre. I then analyzed three contemporary novels: All the Ugly and Wonderful Things (2016) by Bryn Greenwood, My Absolute Darling (2017) by Gabriel Tallent and My Dark Vanessa (2020) by Kate Elizabeth Russell, and compared them with Lolita to find the essential elements that constitute the genre of pedophilia. The analysis showed that there were many elements, mostly themes, which the contemporary novels had in common with Lolita, which helped classify the genre of pedophilia as both transgressive and romantic fiction. But while the three contemporary novels share many aspects with Lolita, they also bring into play themes such as female desire, and a resistance to seeing the female as only victim, with little agency. While the most important aspect is that the work of fiction must show the evolution, from the beginning to the end, of a sentimental relationship and sexual acts between an adult and a child, the contemporary novels of this genre take this basic trait – particularly All the Ugly and Wonderful Things -- in surprisingly transgressive directions of their own.

Cyclone systems over the Aegean Sea. A statistical representation of their main characteristics

Il Mar Egeo è un bacino chiuso dove ha luogo una parte significativa dell'attività ciclonica del Mediterraneo. Inoltre, è circondato da città densamente popolate e ricche di risorse, quindi essere in grado di tracciare ed esaminare le caratteristiche degli intensi fenomeni meteorologici come i cicloni può prevenire i pericoli naturali che provocano perdite umane e danni economici. Questo studio tratta le caratteristiche principali dei sistemi a bassa pressione avvenuti nel Mar Egeo dal 1979 al 2020 ed è basato sul dataset di ERA5. Nello specifico, si tratta di un’analisi statistica delle loro caratteristiche come il numero medio di occorrenza per ogni mese dell’anno, la loro velocità di propagazione, la loro durata, la distanza percorsa dal momento della loro formazione fino al punto della loro dissipazione, lo spostamento fra la posizione di formazione e di dissipazione nonché` la loro distribuzione spaziale nelle 4 stagioni. Quello che è stato osservato è un’attività ciclonica rilevante che ha luogo nel Mar Egeo che costituisce uno dei posti del Mediterraneo con attività ciclonica non trascurabile. Si è fatto un confronto quantitativo tra i cicloni e più in generale le attività cicloniche che passano o nascono nel Mar Egeo con i cicloni che hanno luogo nel Mediterraneo nel suo complesso e quello che è stato trovato è che il Mar Egeo è un’area del Mediterraneo con attività ciclonica rilevante, e con caratteristiche simili dei cicloni che avvengono nel Mar Mediterraneo.

Stochastic physics and representation of El Niño Southern Oscillation in climate models

El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) è il maggiore fenomeno climatico che avviene a livello dell’Oceano Pacifico tropicale e che ha influenze ambientali, climatiche e socioeconomiche a larga scala. In questa tesi si ripercorrono i passi principali che sono stati fatti per tentare di comprendere un fenomeno così complesso. Per prima cosa, si sono studiati i meccanismi che ne governano la dinamica, fino alla formulazione del modello matematico chiamato Delayed Oscillator (DO) model, proposto da Suarez e Schopf nel 1988. In seguito, per tenere conto della natura caotica del sistema studiato, si è introdotto nel modello lo schema chiamato Stochastically Perturbed Parameterisation Tendencies (SPPT). Infine, si sono portati due esempi di soluzione numerica del DO, sia con che senza l’introduzione della correzione apportata dallo schema SPPT, e si è visto in che misura SPPT porta reali miglioramenti al modello studiato.

"Dar voce a una voce": diversità e rappresentazione nella letteratura young adult. Proposta di traduzione di Gabi, a Girl in Pieces di Isabel Quintero.

In this dissertation, I will present my translation into Italian of several excerpts from Gabi, A Girl in Pieces, a young adult (YA) novel by Mexican-American author Isabel Quintero, along with examining the issues of diversity and representation in YA literature. This study aims to demonstrate the benefits of multicultural literature for young readers and the importance of publishing stories that reflect the diversity of the world we inhabit. The translation of the novel is accompanied by an analysis of its social, cultural, and literary context. The first chapter provides an overview of Chican@ history, literature, and culture, focusing on the concepts of identity and hybridity. The second chapter describes YA literature and its characteristics, outlines its history, and discusses the value of diverse books in the lives of teenage readers. Additionally, it cites relevant studies and statistics proving the dearth of diverse literature for young readers in the United States. The third chapter focuses specifically on the representation of Latin@s and Chican@s in literature for young readers, examining the main stereotypes that have plagued the depiction of this community and the new perspectives offered by Mexican-American YA authors. In the fourth chapter, I introduce Isabel Quintero and her novel Gabi, A Girl in Pieces, analyzing its plot, style, format, and main themes. In the fifth chapter, I provide my translation, which is then analyzed in the sixth and final chapter. The translation commentary details some of the problems I encountered and the strategies I applied. The sixth chapter also includes some observations on the translation of teenage speech, of multilingual texts, and of children’s and YA literature.
