The present thesis aims at proving the importance of cultural and literary contexts in the practice of translation: I shall show that, in the case of Northern Irish crime fiction, knowledge of both Northern Irish history and culture as well as of the genre of crime fiction are essential prerequisites for the production of a “responsible” translation. I will therefore offer a brief overview of the history of crime and detective fiction and its main subgenres; some of the most important authors and works will be presented as well, in an analysis that goes from the early years of the genre to the second half of the 20th century. I will then move the focus to Northern Ireland, its culture and its history, and particular attention will be paid to fiction writing in Ireland and Northern Ireland, with a focus on the peculiar phenomenon of “Troubles Trash”. I will tackle the topic of Northern Irish literature and present the contemporary scene of Northern Irish crime fiction; the volume from which the texts for the translation have been taken will be presented, namely Belfast Noir. Subsequently the focus will move on the theoretical framework within which the translations were produced: I will present a literary review of the most significative developments in Translation Studies, with particular attention to the “cultural turn” that has characterised this subject since the 1960s. I will then highlight the phenomenon of “realia” in translation and analyse the approaches of different scholars to the translation of culture-bound references. The final part represents the culmination and practical application of all that was presented in the previous sections: I will discuss the translation of culture-bound references according to the strategies presented in Chapter 4, referring to the proposed translations of two stories. Such analysis aims to show that not only expert linguistic knowledge, but also cultural awareness and a wide literary background are needed in order to make conscious choices in translation.

With the discovery that DNA can be successfully recovered from museum collections, a new source of genetic information has been provided to extend our comprehension of the evolutionary history of species. However, historical specimens are often mislabeled or report incorrect information of origin, thus accurate identification of specimens is essential. Due to the highly damaged nature of ancient DNA many pitfalls exist and particular precautions need to be considered in order to perform genetic analysis. In this study we analyze 208 historical remains of pelagic fishes collected in the beginning of the 20th century. Through the adaptation of existing protocols, usually applied to human remains, we manage to successfully retrieve valuable genetic material from almost all of the examined samples using a guanidine and silica column-based approach. The combined use of two mitochondrial markers cytochrome-oxidase-1(mtDNA COI) and Control Region (mtDNA CR), and the nuclear marker first internal transcriber space (ITS1) allowed us to identify the majority of the examined specimens using traditional PCR and Sanger sequencing techniques. The creation of primers capable of amplifying heavily degraded DNA have great potential for future uses, both in ancient and in modern investigation. The methodologies developed in this study can in fact be applied for other ancient fish specimens as well as cooked or canned samples.

Many buildings constructed during the middle of the 20th century were constructed with criteria that fall short of current requirements. Although shortcomings are possible in all aspects of the design, the inadequacies in terms of seismic design present a more pressing issue to human life. This risk has been seen in various earthquakes that have struck Italy recently, and subsequently, the codes have been altered to account for this underestimated danger. Structures built after these changes remain at risk and must be retrofitted depending on their use. This report centers around the Giovanni Michelucci Institute of Mathematics at the University of Bologna and the work required to modify the building so that it can withstand 60% of the current design requirements. The goal of this particular report is to verify the previous reports written in Italian and present an accurate analysis along with intervention suggestions for this particular building. The work began with an investigation into the previous sources and work to find out how the structure had been interpreted. After understanding the building, corrections were made where required, and the failing elements were organized graphically to more easily show where the building needed the most work. Once the critical zones were mapped, remediation techniques were tested on the top floor, and the modeling techniques and effects of the interventions were presented to assist in further work on the structure.

The aim of this thesis is to subtitle and analyze the subtitles of the animation movie directed by the Tomm Moore, Song of the Sea. It deals with the adventures of Saoirse, the last of the selkies, the mythological women who turned into seals, and his brother Ben to save the fairies and send them home. Although Italy is a “dubbing country”, I decided to subtitle the film not to affect the original audio track, as the Irish accent and Celtic melodies are a fundamental element in Song of the Sea. I chose this movie because it is a quality product (nominated in 2015 for "The Best Animation Movie”) which deserves to be commercialized outside film festivals. In a second phase, I analyzed my subtitles and compared them to amateur subtitles, created by the SRT Project group, to understand the strategies adopted and the basic differences between the two types of subtitling. My dissertation consists of three chapters. The first provides a general overview of audiovisual translation and language transfer methods, focusing on subtitling. The second chapter introduces the movie in an Irish context, and then analyzes the subtitling process, from the software used, to the translation strategies adopted. Finally, the third chapter describes the phenomenon of amateur subtitling, and the most important Italian communities of the current years. Moreover, I analyzed SRT Project fan translation, and asked them a set of questions about amateur subtitling and the translation of Song of the Sea, in order to understand this world and the fansubbing process. The Appendix includes my subtitles, as well as the questionnaire.
