Conventional inorganic materials for x-ray radiation sensors suffer from several drawbacks, including their inability to cover large curved areas, me- chanical sti ffness, lack of tissue-equivalence and toxicity. Semiconducting organic polymers represent an alternative and have been employed as di- rect photoconversion material in organic diodes. In contrast to inorganic detector materials, polymers allow low-cost and large area fabrication by sol- vent based methods. In addition their processing is compliant with fexible low-temperature substrates. Flexible and large-area detectors are needed for dosimetry in medical radiotherapy and security applications. The objective of my thesis is to achieve optimized organic polymer diodes for fexible, di- rect x-ray detectors. To this end polymer diodes based on two different semi- conducting polymers, polyvinylcarbazole (PVK) and poly(9,9-dioctyluorene) (PFO) have been fabricated. The diodes show state-of-the-art rectifying be- haviour and hole transport mobilities comparable to reference materials. In order to improve the X-ray stopping power, high-Z nanoparticle Bi2O3 or WO3 where added to realize a polymer-nanoparticle composite with opti- mized properities. X-ray detector characterization resulted in sensitivties of up to 14 uC/Gy/cm2 for PVK when diodes were operated in reverse. Addition of nanoparticles could further improve the performance and a maximum sensitivy of 19 uC/Gy/cm2 was obtained for the PFO diodes. Compared to the pure PFO diode this corresponds to a five-fold increase and thus highlights the potentiality of nanoparticles for polymer detector design. In- terestingly the pure polymer diodes showed an order of magnitude increase in sensitivity when operated in forward regime. The increase was attributed to a different detection mechanism based on the modulation of the diodes conductivity.

In this thesis project, I present stationary models of rotating fluids with toroidal distributions that can be used to represent the active galactic nuclei (AGN) central obscurers, i.e. molecular tori (Combes et al., 2019), as well as geometrically thick accretion discs, like ADAF discs (Narayan and Yi, 1995) or Polish doughnuts (Abramowicz, 2005). In particular, I study stationary rotating systems with a more general baroclinic distribution (with a vertical gradient of the angular velocity), which are often more realistic and less studied, due to their complexity, than the barotropic ones (with cylindrical rotation), which are easier to construct. In the thesis, I compute analytically the main intrinsic and projected properties of the power-law tori based on the potential-density pairs of Ciotti and Bertin (2005). I study the density distribution and the resulting gravitational potential for different values of α, in the range 2 < α < 5. For the same models, I compute the surface density of the systems when seen face-on and edge-on. I then apply the stationary Euler equations to obtain rotational velocity and temperature distributions of the self-gravitating models in the absence of an external gravitational potential. In the thesis I also consider the power-law tori with the presence of a central black hole in addition to the gas self-gravity, and solving analytically the stationary Euler equations, I compute how the properties of the system are modified by the black hole and how they vary as a function of the black hole mass. Finally, applying the Solberg-Høiland criterion, I show that these baroclinic stationary models are linearly stable in the absence of the black hole. In the presence of the black hole I derive the analytical condition for stability, which depends on α and on the black hole mass. I also study the stability of the tori in the hypothesis that they are weakly magnetized, finding that they are always unstable to this instability.

From 2010, the Proton Radius has become one of the most interest value to determine. The first proof of not complete understanding of its internal structure was the measurement of the Lamb Shift using the muonic hydrogen, leading to a value 7σ lower. A new road so was open and the Proton Radius Puzzle epoch begun. FAMU Experiment is a project that tries to give an answer to this Puzzle implementing high precision experimental apparatus. The work of this thesis is based on the study, construction and first characterization of a new detection system. Thanks to the previous experiments and simulations, this apparatus is composed by 17 detectors positioned on a semicircular crown with the related electronic circuit. The detectors' characterization is based on the use of a LabView program controlling a digital potentiometer and on other two analog potentiometers, all three used to set the amplitude of each detector to a predefined value, around 1.2 V, set on the oscilloscope by which is possible to observe the signal. This is the requirement in order to have, in the final measurement, a single high peak given by the sum of all the signals coming from the detectors. Each signal has been acquired for almost half of an hour, but the entire circuit has been maintained active for more time to observe its capacity to work for longer periods. The principal results of this thesis are given by the spectra of 12 detectors and the corresponding values of Voltages, FWHM and Resolution. The outcomes of the acquisitions show also another expected behavior: the strong dependence of the detectors from the temperature, demonstrating that an its change causes fluctuations in the signal. In turn, these fluctuations will affect the spectrum, resulting in a shifting of the curve and a lower Resolution. On the other hand, a measurement performed in stable conditions will lead to accordance between the nominal and experimental measurements, as for the detectors 10, 11 and 12 of our system.

The corpuscular model describes black holes as leaky bound states of gravitons. To account for the role of matter, a coherent state is built and a semiclassical description is given to the gravitational field by connecting the classical source with the quantum state for gravitons. The properties of this state can be analysed with the help of an Unruh-DeWitt detector, coupled to the quantum state of the system. The presence of a detector in general regularises the usual diverging behaviour of the field in the deep ultraviolet region, and will allow us to probe the coherent state structure and the graviton emission. In particular, a Newtonian analogue of the Unruh effect will be discussed and the coherent state will be modified to properly account for the spherical symmetry of the potential at the level of the quantum state. This correction will ensure that vacuum contributions responsible for the Unruh thermal spectrum are present in a coherent state emission process.

The incompatibility between the proton radius values measured in recent years has given rise to what is now called the proton radius puzzle. This discrepancy is nowadays without explanation. In order to find a solution to the proton radius puzzle a new experiment has been proposed. The aim of this experiment, called FAMU, is to obtain a new and more precise measure of the Zemach radius of the proton, ie the quantity that has the highest uncertainty in high precision spectroscopy. If this measurement confirmed the results obtained before 2010, the starting date of the puzzle, then the discrepancy would be caused by procedural errors or ignored corrections. Otherwise, the new value would indicate the presence of new physics still unkown.
