The recent availability of multi-wavelength data revealed the presence of large reservoirs of warm and cold gas and dust in the innermost regions of the majority of massive elliptical galaxies. To prove an internal origin of cold and warm gas, the investigation of the spatially distributed cooling process which occurs because of non-linear density perturbations and subsequent thermal instabilities is of crucial importance. The first goal of this work of thesis is to investigate the internal origin of warm and cold phases. Numerical simulations are the powerful tool of analysis. The way in which a spatially distributed cooling process originates has been examined and the off-centre amount of gas mass which cools when different and differently characterized AGN feedback mechanisms operate has been quantified. This thesis demonstrates that the aforementioned non-linear density perturbations originate and develop from AGN feedback mechanisms in a natural fashion. An internal origin of the warm phase from the once hot gas is shown to be possible. Computed velocity dispersions of ionized and hot gas are similar. The cold gas as well can originate from the cooling process: indeed, it has been estimated that the surrounding stellar radiation, which is one of the most feasible sources of ionization of the warm gas, does not manage to keep ionized all the gas at 10^4 K. Therefore, cooled gas does undergo a further cooling which can lead the warm phase to lower temperatures. However, the gas which has cooled from the hot phase is expected to be dustless; nonetheless, a large fraction of early type galaxies has detectable dust in their cores, both concentrated in filamentary and disky structures and spread over larger regions. Therefore a regularly rotating disk of cold and dusty gas has been included in the simulations. A new quantitative investigation of the spatially distributed cooling process has therefore been essential: the contribution of the included amount of dust which is embedded in the cold gas does have a role in promoting and enhancing the cooling. The fate of dust which was at first embedded in cold gas has been investigated. The role of AGN feedback mechanisms in dragging (if able) cold and dusty gas from the core of massive ellipticals up to large radii has been studied.

When it comes to designing a structure, architects and engineers want to join forces in order to create and build the most beautiful and efficient building. From finding new shapes and forms to optimizing the stability and the resistance, there is a constant link to be made between both professions. In architecture, there has always been a particular interest in creating new shapes and types of a structure inspired by many different fields, one of them being nature itself. In engineering, the selection of optimum has always dictated the way of thinking and designing structures. This mindset led through studies to the current best practices in construction. However, both disciplines were limited by the traditional manufacturing constraints at a certain point. Over the last decades, much progress was made from a technological point of view, allowing to go beyond today's manufacturing constraints. With the emergence of Wire-and-Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) combined with Algorithmic-Aided Design (AAD), architects and engineers are offered new opportunities to merge architectural beauty and structural efficiency. Both technologies allow for exploring and building unusual and complex structural shapes in addition to a reduction of costs and environmental impacts. Through this study, the author wants to make use of previously mentioned technologies and assess their potential, first to design an aesthetically appreciated tree-like column with the idea of secondly proposing a new type of standardized and optimized sandwich cross-section to the construction industry. Parametric algorithms to model the dendriform column and the new sandwich cross-section are developed and presented in detail. A catalog draft of the latter and methods to establish it are then proposed and discussed. Finally, the buckling behavior of this latter is assessed considering standard steel and WAAM material properties.

In this thesis the design of a pressure regulation system for space propulsion engines (electric and cold gas) has been performed. The Bang-Bang Control (BBC) method has been implemented through the open/close command on a solenoid valve, and the mass flow rate of the propellant has been fixed with suitable flow restrictors. At the beginning, research for the comparison between mechanical and electronic (for BBC) pressure regulators has been performed, which resulted in enough advantages for the selection of the second valve type. The major advantage is about the possibility to have a variable outlet pressure with a variable inlet pressure through a simple remote command, while in mechanical pressure regulators the ratio between inlet and outlet pressures must be mechanically settled. Different pressure control schemes have been analyzed, changing number of solenoid valves, flow restrictors and plenums. For each scheme the valve’s frequencies were evaluated with simplified mathematical models and with the use of simulators implemented on Python; the results obtained from those two methods matched quiet well. From all the schemes it was possible to observe varying frequency and duty cycle, for changes in different parameters. This results, after experimental checks, can be used to design the control system for a given total number of cycles that a specific solenoid valve can guarantee. Finally, tests were performed and it was possible to verify the goodness of the control system. Moreover from the tests it was possible to deduce some tips in order to optimize the running of the simulator.

Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as “3D printing”, is a recent production technique that allows the creation of three-dimensional elements by depositing multiple layers of material. This technology is widely used in various industrial sectors, such as automotive, aerospace and aviation. With AM, it is possible to produce particularly complex elements for which traditional techniques cannot be used. These technologies are not yet widespread in the civil engineering sector, which is slowly changing thanks to the advantages of AM, such as the possibility of realizing elements without geometric restrictions, with less material usage and a higher efficiency, in particular employing Wire-and-Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) technology. Buildings that benefit most from AM are all those structures designed using form-finding and free-form techniques. These include gridshells, where joints are the most critical and difficult elements to design, as the overall behaviour of the structure depends on them. It must also be considered that, during the design, the engineer must try to minimize the structure's own weight. Self-weight reductions can be achieved by Topological Optimization (TO) of the joint itself, which generates complex geometries that could not be made using traditional techniques. To sum up, weight reductions through TO combined with AM allow for several potential benefits, including economic ones. In this thesis, the roof of the British Museum is considered as a case study, analysing the gridshell structure of which a joint will be chosen to be designed and manufactured, using TO and WAAM techniques. Then, the designed joint will be studied in order to understand its structural behaviour in terms of stiffness and strength. Finally, a printing test will be performed to assess the production feasibility using WAAM technology. The computational design and fabrication stages were carried out at Technische Universität Braunschweig in Germany.

Although being studied only for few years, Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) will become the predominant way of producing stainless-steel elements in a near-like future. The analysis and study of such elements has yet to be defined in a proper way, but the projects regarding this subject are innovating more and more thanks to the findings discovered by the latter. This thesis is focused on an initial stage on the analysis of mechanical and geometrical properties of such stainless-steel elements produced by MX3D laboratories in Amsterdam, and to perform a calibration of the design strength values by means of Annex D of Eurocode 0, which talks about the analysis of the semi-probabilistic safety factors, hence the definition of characteristic values. Moreover, after testing the stainless-steel specimens by means of strain gauges and after obtaining mechanical and geometrical properties, a statistical analysis of such properties and an evaluation of characteristic values is performed. After this, there is to execute the calibration of design strength values of WAAM inclined bars and intersections.

The aim of this work is to evaluate the emissions of the main pollutants of a pellet stove, by trying to simulate the real use in domestic operations. All the operating phases of this system were considered: ignition, partial load, increase in power, and nominal load. In each phase, quantity and type of some pollutants in emissions were determined: the main pollutant gases (CO, NOx, SO2, H2S and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)), total dust (PM) and its content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), regulated heavy metals (Ni, Cd, As and Pb), main soluble ions and Total Carbon (TC). Results show that emission factors of TSP, CO, and of the main determined pollutants (TC, Cd and PAHs) are higher during ignition phase. In particular, this phase prevalently contributes to PAHs emissions. During increase in power phase, gas and particulate emissions do not appreciably differ from nominal load ones; nevertheless, PAH emission factors are higher than steady state ones, but lower than ignition phase. Moreover, during not-steady state phases, PAH mixture is more toxic than during steady state phases. In conclusion, this study allowed to go deeper in pellet stove environmental impact, by pointing out how the different operating conditions can modify the emissions. These are different from certificated data, which are based exclusively on measurements in steady state conditions.

Feedback from the most massive components of a young stellar cluster deeply affects the surrounding ISM driving an expanding over-pressured hot gas cavity in it. In spiral galaxies these structures may have sufficient energy to break the disk and eject large amount of material into the halo. The cycling of this gas, which eventually will fall back onto the disk, is known as galactic fountains. We aim at better understanding the dynamics of such fountain flow in a Galactic context, frame the problem in a more dynamic environment possibly learning about its connection and regulation to the local driving mechanism and understand its role as a metal diffusion channel. The interaction of the fountain with a hot corona is hereby analyzed, trying to understand the properties and evolution of the extraplanar material. We perform high resolution hydrodynamical simulations with the moving-mesh code AREPO to model the multi-phase ISM of a Milky Way type galaxy. A non-equilibrium chemical network is included to self consistently follow the evolution of the main coolants of the ISM. Spiral arm perturbations in the potential are considered so that large molecular gas structures are able to dynamically form here, self shielded from the interstellar radiation field. We model the effect of SN feedback from a new-born stellar cluster inside such a giant molecular cloud, as the driving force of the fountain. Passive Lagrangian tracer particles are used in conjunction to the SN energy deposition to model and study diffusion of freshly synthesized metals. We find that both interactions with hot coronal gas and local ISM properties and motions are equally important in shaping the fountain. We notice a bimodal morphology where most of the ejected gas is in a cold $10^4$ K clumpy state while the majority of the affected volume is occupied by a hot diffuse medium. While only about 20\% of the produced metals stay local, most of them quickly diffuse through this hot regime to great scales.

The increasing attention to environmental issues of recent times encourages us to find new methods for the production of energy from renewable sources, and to improve existing ones, increasing their energy yield. Most of the waste and agricultural residues, with a high content of lignin and non-hydrolysable polymers, cannot be effectively transformed into biofuels with existing technology. The purpose of the study was to develop a new thermochemical/ biological process (named Py-AD) for the valorization of scarcely biodegradable substances. A complete continuous prototype was design built and run for 1 year. This consists into a slow pyrolysis system coupled with two sequential digesters and showed to produce a clean pyrobiogas (a biogas with significant amount of C2-C3 hydrocarbons and residual CO/H2), biochar and bio-oil. Py-AD yielded 31.7% w/w biochar 32.5% w/w oil and 24.8% w/w pyrobiogas. The oil condensate obtained was fractionated in its aqueous and organic fraction (87% and 13% respectively). Subsequently, the anaerobic digestion of aqueous fraction was tested in a UASB reactor, for 180 days, in increasing organic loading rate (OLR). The maximum convertible concentration without undergoing instability phenomena and with complete degradation of pyrogenic chemicals was 1.25 gCOD L digester-1 d-1. The final yield of biomethane was equal to 40% of the theoretical yield and with a noticeable additional production equal to 20% of volatile fatty acids. The final results confirm that anaerobic digestion can be used as a useful tool for cleaning of slow pyrolysis products (both gas and condensable fraction) and the obtaining of relatively clean pyrobiogas that could be directly used in internal combustion engine.

PLA is a bio-based polymer that is obtained from renewable resources and it is very promising for a sustainable packaging manufacturing. However, its gas and vapour barrier properties are not enough to comply with the requirements of MAP packaging of fresh foods, which need specific concentration of water and oxygen to avoid spoilage and to keep the organoleptic properties unaltered throughout their shelf-life. The use of waxes from natural renewable sources such as plants (e.g., candelilla wax, carnauba wax, rice bran wax, sunflower wax) or animals (e.g., beeswax) could tackle down the permeation of water vapour through the packaging without affecting its bio-based content. The core of this work is developing wax-based coatings with enhanced thermo-mechanical properties so that they can undergo thermoforming and a proper adhesion to the PLA substrate can be ensured. Chemical modifications and crosslinking of waxes are performed to produce wax-based alkyd resins. The synthesised materials are characterised both by DSC and FTIR. Films of the wax-based alkyds are produced in order to assess their water vapour permeability.
