The purpose of this thesis is, on the one hand, to illustrate the peculiarities of children’s literature, fantasy fiction and their translation and, on the other hand, to propose a translation from English to Italian of some chapters of the e-book The Explorers’ Gate by American author Chris Grabenstein. The first chapters of this work offer an analysis of different critical studies on children’s literature and fantasy fiction and illustrate the characteristics of these two literary expressions. I will also discuss the different approaches to their translation in order to produce a translated text that is consistent with its literary genre and with translation theories. The third chapter is about the author and includes an interview on his idea of children’s literature and his opinions about translation. The second part of this thesis is represented by the actual translation of the e-book. Firstly, I will analyze the source text, dividing the analysis in extra-textual and intra- textual and focusing on sender, addressee, time and space, function of the text, plot, structure, narrator, style and language used by the author. I will also highlight those elements that probably would be challenging during the translation phase. Secondly, I will explain the macro-strategy that I adopted during the process of translation, which can be defined as child-oriented. In the last chapter I will highlight those passages that represented translation challenges and I will show how I tackled them.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which has a role in several psychiatric and neurological disorders. In-vivo detection of its concentration at the microscopic scale would benefit the study of these conditions and help in the development of therapies. The ideal sensor would be biocompatible, able to probe concentrations in microscopic volumes and sensitive to the small physiological concentrations of this molecule (10 nM - 1 μM). The ease of oxidation of dopamine makes it possible to detect it by electrochemical methods. An additional requirement in this kind of experiments when run in water, though, is to have a large potential window inside which no redox reactions with water take place. A promising class of materials which are being explored is the one of pyrolyzed photoresists. Photoresists can be lithographically patterned with micrometric resolution and after pyrolysis leave a glassy carbon material which is conductive, biocompatible and has a large electrochemical water window. In this work I developed a fabrication procedure for microelectrode arrays with three dimensional electrodes, making the whole device using just a negative photoresist called SU8. Making 3D electrodes could be a way to enhance the sensitivity of the electrodes without occupying a bigger footprint on the device. I characterized the electrical, morphological, and electrochemical properties of these electrodes, in particular their sensitivity to dopamine. I also fabricated and tested a two dimensional device for comparison. The three dimensional devices fabricated showed inferior properties to their two dimensional counter parts. I found a possible explanation and suggested some ways in which the fabrication could be improved.

Radiation dosimetry is crucial in many fields, where the exposure of ionizing radiation must be precisely controlled to avoid health and environmental safety issues. Radiotherapy and radioprotection are two examples in which fast and reliable detectors are needed. Compact and large area wearable detectors are being developed to address real-life radiation dosimetry applications, their ideal properties include flexibility, lightness, and low-cost. This thesis contributed to the development of Radiation sensitive OXide Field Effect Transistors (ROXFETs), which are detectors able to provide fast and real-time radiation read out. ROXFETs are based on thin film transistors fabricated with high-mobility amorphous oxide semiconductor, making them compatible with large area, flexible, and low cost production over plastic substrates. The gate dielectric material has high dielectric constant and high atomic number, which results in high performances and high radiation sensitivity, respectively. The aim of this work was to establish a stable and reliable fabrication process for ROXFETs made with atomic layer deposited gate dielectric. A study on the effect of gate dielectric materials was performed, focusing the attention on the properties of the dielectric-semiconductor interface. Single and multi layer dielectric structures were compared during this work. Furthermore, the effect of annealing temperature was studied. The device performances were tested to understand the underlying physical processes. In this way, it was possible to determine a reliable fabrication procedure and an optimal structure for ROXFETs. An outstanding sensitivity of (65±3)V/Gy was measured in detectors with a bi-layer Ta₂O₅-Al₂O₃ gate dielectric with low temperature annealing performed at 180°C.
