A new method for the evaluation of the efficiency of parabolic trough collectors, called Rapid Test Method, is investigated at the Solar Institut Jülich. The basic concept is to carry out measurements under stagnation conditions. This allows a fast and inexpensive process due to the fact that no working fluid is required. With this approach, the temperature reached by the inner wall of the receiver is assumed to be the stagnation temperature and hence the average temperature inside the collector. This leads to a systematic error which can be rectified through the introduction of a correction factor. A model of the collector is simulated with COMSOL Multipyisics to study the size of the correction factor depending on collector geometry and working conditions. The resulting values are compared with experimental data obtained at a test rig at the Solar Institut Jülich. These results do not match with the simulated ones. Consequentially, it was not pos-sible to verify the model. The reliability of both the model with COMSOL Multiphysics and of the measurements are analysed. The influence of the correction factor on the rapid test method is also studied, as well as the possibility of neglecting it by measuring the receiver’s inner wall temperature where it receives the least amount of solar rays. The last two chapters analyse the specific heat capacity as a function of pressure and tem-perature and present some considerations about the uncertainties on the efficiency curve obtained with the Rapid Test Method.

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment is a long-baseline neutrino experiment which is under construction in the United States. It will be composed of a Near Detector system located a few hundred meters from the neutrino source at Fermilab and a far detector system composed of four multi-kt LArTPCs at Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota. The experiment will measure the leptonic CP violation phase of the PMNS matrix and discriminate the ordering of neutrino masses. Additional physics goals include detection of neutrinos from supernovae collapse and search for possible proton decay. One component of the Near detector complex is the System for on-Axis Neutrino Detection apparatus, which includes GRanular Argon for Interaction of Neutrinos, a novel liquid Argon detector that aims at imaging neutrino interactions using scintillation light collected by optical system and read-out by SIPM matrix. This thesis work aims at studying the GRAIN performances as a homogeneous calorimeter, able to measure the energy deposited by charged particles in LAr through scintillation photons emitted along their path inside the vessel. The energy calibration of the liquid argon volume required to write (and validate) an efficient software for the detector response simulation to the arrival of scintillation photons.

An emerging technology, that Smart Radio Environments rely on to improve wireless link quality, are Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs). A RIS, in general, can be understood as a thin layer of EM composite material, typically mounted on the walls or ceilings of buildings, which can be reconfigured even after its deployment in the network. RISs made by composing artificial materials in an engineered way, in order to obtain unconventional characteristics, are called metasurfaces. Through the programming of the RIS, it is possible to control and/or modify the radio waves that affect it, thus shaping the radio environment. To overcome the limitations of RISs, the metaprism represents an alternative: it is a passive and non-reconfigurable frequency-selective metasurface that acts as a metamirror to improve the efficiency of the wireless link. In particular, using an OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing) signaling it is possible to control the reflection of the signal, suitably selecting the sub-carrier assigned to each user, without having to interact with the metaprism or having to estimate the CSI. This thesis investigates how OFDM signaling and metaprism can be used for localization purposes, especially to extend the coverage area at low cost, in a scenario where the user is in NLoS (Non-line-of-sight) conditions with respect to the base station, both single antenna. In particular, the paper concerns the design of the analytical model and the corresponding Matlab implementation of a Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimator able to estimate the unknown position, behind an obstacle, from which a generic user transmits to a base station, exploiting the metaprism.
