The topic of this thesis is the DFT computational study of the mechanisms for the synthesis of chiral 3,4,5-trisubstituted piperidines and 2,6-disubstituted morpholines. The goal of this synthesis is to use, the same substrate containing two electrophilic sites: an α,β-unsaturated ester and a ketone, which evolve according to the nucleophile used (cyanide, phenyl sulfide) through different addition and cyclization reactions. A quaternary ammonium salt is used as a catalyst for these reactions, which leads to a diastereoisomeric excess both for the reactions of morpholine and piperidine products. Studies in silico of the pathways of these reactions explain the chemoselection and diasteroselection deriving from the two nucleophiles used. In this case of piperidine products, it was also possible to validate the hypothesis of a concerted nucleophilic addition mechanism on the α,β-unsaturated site and cyclization due to an intramolecular Michael addition.

Asymmetric organocatalysed reactions are one of the most fascinating synthetic strategies which one can adopt in order to induct a desired chirality into a reaction product. From all the possible practical applications of small organic molecules in catalytic reaction, amine–based catalysis has attracted a lot of attention during the past two decades. The high interest in asymmetric aminocatalytic pathways is to account to the huge variety of carbonyl compounds that can be functionalized by many different reactions of their corresponding chiral–enamine or –iminium ion as activated nucleophile and electrophile, respectively. Starting from the employment of L–Proline, many useful substrates have been proposed in order to further enhance the catalytic performances of these reaction in terms of enantiomeric excess values, yield, conversion of the substrate and turnover number. In particular, in the last decade the use of chiral and quasi–enantiomeric primary amine species has got a lot of attention in the field. Contemporaneously, many studies have been carried out in order to highlight the mechanism through which these kinds of substrates induct chirality into the desired products. In this scenario, computational chemistry has played a crucial role due to the possibility of simulating and studying any kind of reaction and the transition state structures involved. In the present work the transition state geometries of primary amine–catalysed Michael addition reaction of cyclohexanone to trans–β–nitrostyrene with different organic acid cocatalysts has been studied through different computational techniques such as density functional theory based quantum mechanics calculation and force–field directed molecular simulations.

A study of the pyrolysis and oxidation (phi 0.5-1-2) of methane and methyl formate (phi 0.5) in a laboratory flow reactor (Length = 50 cm, inner diameter = 2.5 cm) has been carried out at 1-4 atm and 300-1300 K temperature range. Exhaust gaseous species analysis was realized using a gas chromatographic system, Varian CP-4900 PRO Mirco-GC, with a TCD detector and using helium as carrier for a Molecular Sieve 5Å column and nitrogen for a COX column, whose temperatures and pressures were respectively of 65°C and 150kPa. Model simulations using NTUA [1], Fisher et al. [12], Grana [13] and Dooley [14] kinetic mechanisms have been performed with CHEMKIN. The work provides a basis for further development and optimization of existing detailed chemical kinetic schemes.

The glucaric acid (GLA) has been identified as a “top value-added chemical from biomass” that can be employed for many uses; for instance, it could be a precursor of adipic acid, a monomer of Nylon-6,6. GLA can be synthetized by the oxidation of glucose (GLU), passing through the intermediate gluconic acid (GLO). In recent years, a new process has been sought to obtain GLA in an economic and environmental sustainable way, in order to replace the current use of HNO3 as a stoichiometric oxidant, or electrocatalysis and biochemical synthesis, which show several disadvantages. Thereby, this work is focused on the study of catalysts based on gold nanoparticles supported on activated carbon for the oxidation reaction of GLU to GLA using O2 as an oxidant agent and NaOH as base. The sol-immobilization method leads us to obtain small and well dispersed nanoparticles, characterized by UV-Vis, XRD and TEM techniques. Repeating the reaction on different batches of catalyst, both the synthesis and the reaction were confirmed to be reproducible. The effect of the reaction time feeding GLO as reagent was studied: the results show that the conversion of GLO increases as the reaction time increases; however, the yields of GLA and others increase up to 1 hour, and then they remain constant. In order to obtain information on the catalytic mechanism at the atomistic level, a computational study based on density functional theory and atomistic modeling of the gold nano-catalyst were performed. Highly symmetric (icosahedral and cubo-octahedral) and distorted Au55 nanoparticles have been optimized along with Au(111) and Au(100) surfaces. Distorted structures were found to be more stable than symmetrical ones due to relativistic effects. On these various models the adsorptions of various species involved in the catalysis have been studied, including OH- species, GLU and GLO. The study carried out aims to provide a method for approaching to the study of nanoparticellary catalytic systems.

Ionic Liquids (ILs) constituted by organic cations and inorganic anions are particular salts with a melting point below 100°C. Their physical properties such as melting point and solubility can be tuned by altering the combination of their anions and cations. In the last years the interest in ILs has been centered mostly on their possible use as “green” alternatives to the traditional volatile organic solvents (VOCs) thanks to their low vapour pressure and the efficient ability in catalyst immobilization. In this regard, the subject of the present thesis is the study of the oxodiperoxomolybdenum catalyzed epoxidation of olefins in ILs media with hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant. In particular N-functionalized imidazolium salts, such as 1-(2-t-Butoxycarbonylamino-ethyl)-3-methylimidazolium (1), were synthesized with different counterions [I]-, [PF6]-, [NO3]-, [NTf2]- and [ClO4]– and tested as reaction solvents. The counterion exchange with [Cl]-, [NTf2]- and [NO3]- was also performed in unfuctionalized imidazolium salts such as 3-butyl-1-methylimidazol-3-ium (3). All the prepared ILs were tested in catalytic epoxidation of olefins exploiting oxodiperoxomolybdenum complexes [MoO(O2)2(C4H6N2)2] (4) and [MoO(O2)2(C5H8N2)2] (5) as catalysts. The IL 3[NTf2] and the catalysts 5 give rise to the best results leading to the selective formation of the epoxide of cis-cyclooctene avoiding hydrolysis side reaction. A preliminary study on the synthesis of novel NHC oxodiperoxomolybdenum complexes starting from imidazolium salts was also developed.

Axially chiral substrates are an interesting and widely studied class of compounds as they can be found in bioactive natural products and are employed as functional materials or as ligands in asymmetric catalytic processes. One branch of this family is the well-known world of the atropisomers. Among them, atropisomeric compounds possessing an N–N stereogenic axis are one truthfully fascinating system but not completely understood yet. In this thesis, we computationally investigated the mechanism of the diastereoselective formation of the N – N chiral axis of a hydrazide under asymmetric phase transfer catalytic conditions. Moreover, during this study, torsional barriers have been calculated for both the reagent and the product at the density functional theory (DFT). These values turned out to suitably match the experimental values and observations. Finally, Electronic Circular Dichroism (ECD) spectra have been simulated in order to assign the chiral absolute configuration to the products.

From the discoveries of Pasteur, stereochemistry has played an increasingly important role in the chemical sciences. In particular conformational study of molecules with axial chirality is object of intense research. Through Dynamic-NMR analysis and simulation of the spectra, the energy rotational barriers value of conformers are obtained. When this barrier is high sufficiently, atropisomeric stable compounds can be reached. They can be separated and used in stereo-synthesis and in packing processes. 3,4-bis-aryl maleimides, in which the aromatic groups are sufficiently bulky, generate atropisomeric stable configurations, that can be isolated at room temperature. The assignment of absolute configurations is performed through ECD analysis and comparison with computational calculations. The biological activities of maleimide derivatives widen the field of atropisomers application also in biological systems.

In this thesis we studied the stereodynamic behavior of 1,2-azaborines variously substituted on boron (7a, 7b, 13). Depending on the hindrance of the asymmetric aryl substituent the resulting conformations could be stereolabile or configurationally stable. Through dynamic NMR and lineshape simulation, the energy rotational barriers of the different conformers are obtained. When the barrier is higher than 22-23 kcal/mol stable atropisomers that are fisically separable could be obtained (case of compound 13) and the free activation energy barrier is determinable by kinetic analysis. Absolute configuration of two atropisomers were assigned by comparison between computational calculations and experimental ECD. Isosteric compound 21 is then synthesized in order to compare the rotational barrier around B-Caryl with the one around Cnaphth-Caryl bond.

The assessment of historical structures is a significant need for the next generations, as historical monuments represent the community’s identity and have an important cultural value to society. Most of historical structures built by using masonry which is one of the oldest and most common construction materials used in the building sector since the ancient time. Also it is considered a complex material, as it is a composition of brick units and mortar, which affects the structural performance of the building by having different mechanical behaviour with respect to different geometry and qualities given by the components.

Sustainable chemicals currently have a very limited market share due to current low production but biomass is expected to become one of the major renewable energy and fine chemicals sources in the coming years. Bearing in mind the compromise of all nations to climatic change remediation, the industries will need to use efficient catalysts and green processes to meet the requirements of emissions and efficiency. This project is expected to develop new catalysts to convert 1,6-hexanediol to adipic acid through a green approach based on the “nano-catalysis” and “green chemistry” concepts. Supported Au and Pd nanoparticles were used to study one-pot reaction of HDO oxidation to AA using O2 as a final oxidant and H2O as a solvent. Catalytic results showed that under low pressure O2 atmosphere and low temperature (< 120°C) AuNPs supported on basic-supports are more active than acid and amphoteric oxides. The effect of basic oxide (MgO) addition to MgF2 was studied. The study showed that doping of MgF2 with MgO increased significantly the activity of the catalyst. The best results were obtained with the Au/0.4MgF2-0.6MgO sample, which gave the selectivity to AA of 33% at HDO conversion of 62%.

The topic of this thesis concerns the study of catalytic processes for the synthesis of chiral 3,4,5-trisubstituted piperidine and 2,6-disubstituted morpholine. Substrates possessing an α,β-unsaturated ester and a ketone moiety, able to undergo addition/cyclization cascade reactions with different pro-nucleophiles (thiophenols, acetone cyanohydrin and malononitrile), have been evaluated. Chiral and achiral systems for phase-transfer catalysis have been applied as catalysts. Moderate enantiomeric excesses have been obtained for the morpholinic products and good to excellent values for the piperidinic products, by using cyclopeptoids and quaternary ammonium salts derived from Chincona alkaloids as catalysts respectively. Moreover, the absolute configuration of the 3,4,5-trisubstituted piperidines has been determined through quantomechanical simulations of their chirooptical spectra. Finally, the relative configuration of the 2,6-disubstituted morpholines has been assigned through NMR experiments.

This thesis project presents a work based on the study of a particular class of amino-boranes, called bis-phenothiazine-aryl-boranes. The peculiarity of these compounds is the N-B-N chemical moiety and their complex conformational behaviour, due to the combination of steric hindrance and conjugation of the B-N bond. Our work is focused on two main products with different symmetry: bis-phenothiazine-2-methylnaphthyl-borane (2b) and bis-phenothiazine-anthracenyl-borane (2c). We firstly focused our attention on an effective way of synthesis, by optimizing both reaction conditions and purification. The products and co-products of interest were then characterized with NMR, mass spectroscopy and X-Ray diffraction on single crystals. The products were eventually analysed through conformational studies, by experimental techniques, such as dynamic NMR and EXSY, and by a theorical approach with DFT calculations.

During this project we have synthetized different compounds belonging to the class of amino-boranes for the study of bis-aryl-B=N system. We have decided to keep unchanged the aryl components and change only the amine to observe the effect of that on the B=N bond. The used amines are modified carbazoles with functional groups chosen to amplify or disempower the steric and the conjugation effect. We have found that the evaluation of steric barrier was possible studying the gearing aryls rotation around the C-B bonds, while the conjugation barrier is instead given by the energy needed to break the formal double bond B=N and allow the amine rotation. The work started with a proposed synthesis, improved for every reaction, then the products are characterized by NMR, fluorometric spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and X-Ray diffraction on single crystal. The following study on rotational energy barrier was possible theoretically through DFT calculation and experimentally with techniques like Dynamic NMR and EXSY. The fluorometric analysis was done for the study of the solvatochromic propriety of the products.
