The Gulf of Aqaba represents a small scale, easy to access, regional analogue of larger oceanic oligotrophic systems. In this Gulf, the seasonal cycles of stratification and mixing drives the seasonal phytoplankton dynamics. In summer and fall, when nutrient concentrations are very low, Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus are more abundant in the surface water. This two populations are exposed to phosphate limitation. During winter mixing, when nutrient concentrations are high, Chlorophyceae and Cryptophyceae are dominant but scarce or absent during summer. In this study it was tried to develop a simulation model based on historical data to predict the phytoplankton dynamics in the northern Gulf of Aqaba. The purpose is to understand what forces operate, and how, to determine the phytoplankton dynamics in this Gulf. To make the models data sampled in two different sampling station (Fish Farm Station and Station A) were used. The data of chemical, biological and physical factors, are available from 14th January 2007 to 28th December 2009. The Fish Farm Station point was near a Fish Farm that was operational until 17th June 2008, complete closure date of the Fish Farm, about halfway through the total sampling time. The Station A sampling point is about 13 Km away from the Fish Farm Station. To build the model, the MATLAB software was used (version 7.6.0.324 R2008a), in particular a tool named Simulink. The Fish Farm Station models shows that the Fish Farm activity has altered the nutrient concentrations and as a consequence the normal phytoplankton dynamics. Despite the distance between the two sampling stations, there might be an influence from the Fish Farm activities also in the Station A ecosystem. The models about this sampling station shows that the Fish Farm impact appears to be much lower than the impact in the Fish Farm Station, because the phytoplankton dynamics appears to be driven mainly by the seasonal mixing cycle.

Every year, thousand of surgical treatments are performed in order to fix up or completely substitute, where possible, organs or tissues affected by degenerative diseases. Patients with these kind of illnesses stay long times waiting for a donor that could replace, in a short time, the damaged organ or the tissue. The lack of biological alternates, related to conventional surgical treatments as autografts, allografts, e xenografts, led the researchers belonging to different areas to collaborate to find out innovative solutions. This research brought to a new discipline able to merge molecular biology, biomaterial, engineering, biomechanics and, recently, design and architecture knowledges. This discipline is named Tissue Engineering (TE) and it represents a step forward towards the substitutive or regenerative medicine. One of the major challenge of the TE is to design and develop, using a biomimetic approach, an artificial 3D anatomy scaffold, suitable for cells adhesion that are able to proliferate and differentiate themselves as consequence of the biological and biophysical stimulus offered by the specific tissue to be replaced. Nowadays, powerful instruments allow to perform analysis day by day more accurateand defined on patients that need more precise diagnosis and treatments.Starting from patient specific information provided by TC (Computed Tomography) microCT and MRI(Magnetic Resonance Imaging), an image-based approach can be performed in order to reconstruct the site to be replaced. With the aid of the recent Additive Manufacturing techniques that allow to print tridimensional objects with sub millimetric precision, it is now possible to practice an almost complete control of the parametrical characteristics of the scaffold: this is the way to achieve a correct cellular regeneration. In this work, we focalize the attention on a branch of TE known as Bone TE, whose the bone is main subject. Bone TE combines osteoconductive and morphological aspects of the scaffold, whose main properties are pore diameter, structure porosity and interconnectivity. The realization of the ideal values of these parameters represents the main goal of this work: here we'll a create simple and interactive biomimetic design process based on 3D CAD modeling and generative algorithmsthat provide a way to control the main properties and to create a structure morphologically similar to the cancellous bone. Two different typologies of scaffold will be compared: the first is based on Triply Periodic MinimalSurface (T.P.M.S.) whose basic crystalline geometries are nowadays used for Bone TE scaffolding; the second is based on using Voronoi's diagrams and they are more often used in the design of decorations and jewellery for their capacity to decompose and tasselate a volumetric space using an heterogeneous spatial distribution (often frequent in nature). In this work, we will show how to manipulate the main properties (pore diameter, structure porosity and interconnectivity) of the design TE oriented scaffolding using the implementation of generative algorithms: "bringing back the nature to the nature".

Isochrysis galbana is a widely-used strain in aquaculture in spite of its low productivity. To maximize the productivity of processes based on this microalgae strain, a model was developed considering the influence of irradiance, temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen concentration on the photosynthesis and respiration rate. Results demonstrate that this strain tolerates temperatures up to 35ºC but it is highly sensitive to irradiances higher than 500 µE·m-2·s-1 and dissolved oxygen concentrations higher than 11 mg·l-1. With the researcher group of the “Universidad de Almeria”, the developed model was validated using data from an industrial-scale outdoor tubular photobioreactor demonstrating that inadequate temperature and dissolved oxygen concentrations reduce productivity to half that which is maximal, according to light availability under real outdoor conditions. The developed model is a useful tool for managing working processes, especially in the development of new processes based on this strain and to take decisions regarding optimal control strategies. Also the outdoor production of Isochrysis galbana T-iso in industrial size tubular photobioreactors (3.0 m3) has been studied. Experiments were performed modifying the dilution rate and evaluating the biomass productivity and quality, in addition to the overall performance of the system. Results confirmed that T-iso can be produced outdoor at commercial scale in continuous mode, productivities up to 20 g·m-2·day-1 of biomass rich in proteins (45%) and lipids (25%) being obtained. The utilization of this type of photobioreactors allows controlling the contamination and pH of the cultures, but daily variation of solar radiation imposes the existence of inadequate dissolved oxygen concentration and temperature at which the cells are exposed to inside the reactor. Excessive dissolved oxygen reduced the biomass productivity to 68% of maximal, whereas inadequate temperature reduces to 63% of maximal. Thus, optimally controlling these parameters the biomass productivity can be duplicated. These results confirm the potential to produce this valuable strain at commercial scale in optimally designed/operated tubular photobioreactors as a biotechnological industry.

This study presents the procedure followed to make a prediction of the critical flutter speed for a composite UAV wing. At the beginning of the study, there was no information available on the materials used for the construction of the wing, and the wing internal structure was unknown. Ground vibration tests were performed in order to detect the structure’s natural frequencies and mode shapes. From tests, it was found that the wing possesses a high stiffness, presenting well separated first bending and torsional natural frequencies. Two finite element models were developed and matched to experimental results. It has been necessary to introduce some assumptions, due to the uncertainties regarding the structure. The matching process was based on natural frequencies’ sensitivity with respect to a change in the mechanical properties of the materials. Once experimental results were met, average material properties were also found. Aerodynamic coefficients for the wing were obtained by means of a CFD software. The same analysis was also conducted when the wing is deformed in its first four mode shapes. A first approximation for flutter critical speed was made with the classical V - g technique. Finally, wing’s aeroelastic behavior was simulated using a coupled CFD/CSD method, obtaining a more accurate flutter prediction. The CSD solver is based on the time integration of modal dynamic equations, requiring the extraction of mode shapes from the previously performed finite-element analysis. Results show that flutter onset is not a risk for the UAV, occurring at velocities well beyond its operative range.

In this thesis, we explore three methods for the geometrico-static modelling of continuum parallel robots. Inspired by biological trunks, tentacles and snakes, continuum robot designs can reach confined spaces, manipulate objects in complex environments and conform to curvilinear paths in space. In addition, parallel continuum manipulators have the potential to inherit some of the compactness and compliance of continuum robots while retaining some of the precision, stability and strength of rigid-links parallel robots. Subsequently, the foundation of our work is performed on slender beam by applying the Cosserat rod theory, appropriate to model continuum robots. After that, three different approaches are developed on a case study of a planar parallel continuum robot constituted of two connected flexible links. We solve the forward and inverse geometrico-static problem namely by using (a) shooting methods to obtain a numerical solution, (b) an elliptic method to find a quasi-analytical solution, and (c) the Corde model to perform further model analysis. The performances of each of the studied methods are evaluated and their limits are highlighted. This thesis is divided as follows. Chapter one gives the introduction on the field of the continuum robotics and introduce the parallel continuum robots that is studied in this work. Chapter two describe the geometrico-static problem and gives the mathematical description of this problem. Chapter three explains the numerical approach with the shooting method and chapter four introduce the quasi-analytical solution. Then, Chapter five introduce the analytic method inspired by the Corde model and chapter six gives the conclusions of this work.

Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) should be considered as one of the main components to be able to implement sustainable development. Friuli Venezia Giulia region with its 93 km of coastline is committed to investing its resources in projects aimed at studying the evolution of the coast. In this report, reference will be made to the area in front of the municipality of Grado, where the Banco della Mula di Muggia is located. Starting from previous studies and surveys, morphology of the coastal stretch between the municipality of Grado and the mouth of the Isonzo river will be reproduced through numerical modeling tools, to simulate its hydrodynamic behavior on an annual basis and also as a function of significant events such as storms, calm events or floods of the Isonzo river. The software employed will be the MIKE by DHI with in particular the implementation of "Littoral Drift" and "MIKE 21/3" Coupled models. The first to calculate net and gross longshore transport on an annual basis along a transverse profile, the latter is a modelling system for coastal application that will be used for the analysis of significant events effects. Although not primary focus of this work, there will be included an initial review of finger bars. These particular sand formations are present at the south-western border of the Banco della Mula di Muggia and may have an impact on it. This work could form the starting point of future investigations to build on the findings of this report.

In this thesis work a nonlinear model for Interdigitated Capacitors (IDCs) based on ferroelectric materials, is proposed. Through the properties of materials such as Hafnium-Zirconium Oxide (HfZrO2), it is possible to realize tunable radiofrequency (RF) circuits. In particular, the model proposed in this thesis describes the use of an IDC, realized on a High-Resistivity silicon substrate, as a phase shifter for beam-steering applications. The model is obtained starting from already present experimental measurements, through which it is possible to identify a circuit model. The model is tested for both low power values and other power values using Harmonic Balance simulations, which show an excellent convergence of the model up to 40 dBm of input power. Furthermore, an array composed by two patches operating both at 2.55 GHz, which exploits the tunable properties of the HfZrO-based IDC is proposed. At 0dBm the model shows a 47° phase shift with polarization -1 V and 1 V which leads to a 11° steering of the main lobe of the array.

Turbulent plasmas inside tokamaks are modeled and studied using guiding center theory, applied to charged test particles, in a Hamiltonian framework. The equations of motion for the guiding center dynamics, under the conditions of a constant and uniform magnetic field and turbulent electrostatic field are derived by averaging over the fast gyroangle, for the first and second order in the guiding center potential, using invertible changes of coordinates such as Lie transforms. The equations of motion are then made dimensionless, exploiting temporal and spatial periodicities of the model chosen for the electrostatic potential. They are implemented numerically in Python. Fast Fourier Transform and its inverse are used. Improvements to the original Python scripts are made, notably the introduction of a power-law curve fitting to account for anomalous diffusion, the possibility to integrate the equations in two steps to save computational time by removing trapped trajectories, and the implementation of multicolored stroboscopic plots to distinguish between trapped and untrapped guiding centers. The post-processing of the results is made in MATLAB. The values and ranges of the parameters chosen for the simulations are selected based on numerous simulations used as feedback tools. In particular, a recurring value for the threshold to detect trapped trajectories is evidenced. Effects of the Larmor radius, the amplitude of the guiding center potential and the intensity of its second order term are studied by analyzing their diffusive regimes, their stroboscopic plots and the shape of guiding center potentials. The main result is the identification of cases anomalous diffusion depending on the values of the parameters (mostly the Larmor radius). The transitions between diffusive regimes are identified. The presence of highways for the super-diffusive trajectories are unveiled. The influence of the charge on these transitions from diffusive to ballistic behaviors is analyzed.

Currently making digital 3D models and replicas of the cultural heritage assets play an important role in the preservation and having a high detail source for future research and intervention. In this dissertation, it is tried to assess different methods for digital surveying and making 3D replicas of cultural heritage assets in different scales of size. The methodologies vary in devices, software, workflow, and the amount of skill that is required. The three phases of the 3D modelling process are data acquisition, modelling, and model presentation. Each of these sections is divided into sub-sections and there are several approaches, methods, devices, and software that may be employed, furthermore, the selection process should be based on the operation's goal, available facilities, the scale and properties of the object or structure to be modeled, as well as the operators' expertise and experience. The most key point to remember is that the 3D modelling operation should be properly accurate, precise, and reliable; therefore, there are so many instructions and pieces of advice on how to perform 3D modelling effectively. It is an attempt to compare and evaluate the various ways of each phase in order to explain and demonstrate their differences, benefits, and drawbacks in order to serve as a simple guide for new and/or inexperienced users.
